Looks like Tim Cook is at it again, corrupting Steven Job's vision. Soon they'll add mouse support and the dream of the iPad will be dead.

What's the big deal about adding mouse support? If you can't sleep at night knowing that the iPad can use a mouse, then DON'T USE ONE! For others (like every other feature) it's there for you to use or not.

That's not a feature that's possible with existing iOS devices using a Lightning to HDMI adapter
So they'll just update the port or the adapter or something. Literally zero chance of them giving up their proprietary port, especially when they still won't even ship a simple Lightning USB-C cable with the stupid things.

a dongle or excessory
I know that last word was probably a typo, but it is such a fitting typo

I want a small bezel ipad pretty bad. its doesnt have to be a pro.
When? I have a 2013 ipad to upgrade!
Why? How you gonna hold it? Bezels are useful on iPad. Also I dont understand why people want support for mouse and external drive. Why not to buy MacBook? Running iOS in the current form is not a computer replacement by long shot

Support for external 4k monitor and support for mouse will make iPad Pro a legitimate replacement for the laptop.
[doublepost=1537392607][/doublepost]iPad has such great potential. Between tablet and laptop, Apple should focus 10 times more on the tablet.
[doublepost=1537392831][/doublepost]One more function I like the iPad Pro to have: making phone call.
[doublepost=1537393200][/doublepost]A tablet like the iPad Pro to laptop is like T-Model to the horse carriage. You may say the car was a replacement of the horse carriage, but the car rather creates a new non-horse based civilization.

ooooh I love what this hint hints at. Does anyone see a mouse pointer in iPads future?

Me too! The only thing I don’t use my iPad Pro for is heavy photography editing. But the power is getting there on both the hardware and application sides. I edited some photos immediately after an event and posted them on Instagram. Judging by the quality, you would never know they were edited on the iPad. The biggest issue remaining for photo apps is batch processing many photos. I think it could be done.

I think the possibility of having an external monitor would lessen the migration/adotption to Microsoft Surface tablets. Making the iPad Pro have more of that desktop replacement vibe. Certainly for home users. Some apps like Excel for iOS would certainly need to up their game for business users.

I got my iPad Pro a couple of years ago on the promise that apps would be built and upgraded to take advantage of the power. I’d say within the last 6 months, apps and especially media creation one, are finally catching up to the iPad Pro. I hope the new iPad Pro takes it a higher level.

Why spend a lot of money on a Macbook when I already have an iPad Pro? People that have issues with mouse support seems to want to only think one way...that doing so would mean an iPad is a computer replacement. That can't be farther from the truth. I have plenty of computers and would continue to use them when appropriate. It's completely dumb to think an iPad can replace a computer for everyone. But, there are times that I'd rather use an iPad. It's already in my bag, it's instant-on, and if I had a mouse, I could navigate faster than with touch (that's just me, and probably not true for every human being on the planet) since I use a mouse on my desktop and laptop 100% of the time.

It doesn't have to ruin the UI. Android tablets support the use of a mouse, and most people don't even know it! But you can pair a mouse, get a pointer and point-and-click all you want. It's actually very handy.

I am super pumped for the new iPads. Just hope I can afford one. There really isn't much I need a Mac for anymore, at least not at home.

::SMDH:: It sounds like you guys want the iPad to be a MacBook. Just buy a MacBook.
I’d love to! But I already own a 2016 MBP and last time I checked, Apple didn’t offer any MacBooks with Apple Pencil support. A 12.9” iPad Pro with 256 GB sells at a price point where MacBooks used to be a few years ago - but without the same connectivity and versatility.

So, yeah: If Apple doesn’t want the MacBook to gain iPad features I’d be happy to see the iPad Pro (!) gains a few MacBook features.

Would it be possible for Apple to add USB-C and still maintain the lighting port? I just can’t see Apple separating the iPhone and iPad like that. I remember getting an iPhone 5 and then getting the iPad with a lightning connection just so I could share the few adapters that I had. Will we see a USC-C lightning adapter if this rumor is true?
If the next iPad Pro gets USB-C, the iPhone 11/11 Max will get it for sure.

I think they got burned last time they announced a new connector (the lightening connect we all have today) so perhaps introducing it to the iPad Pro this year (fairly niche and folks more willing to get new cables) will allow the market (and media) to wrap their heads around the sunsetting of the lightening connector on iPhone before it happens next year. It won't be such a "shock" and people will know it is coming.

i assume the 2019 iPhones will have a USB-C connector and the new 18W plug in the box.

Possible? Sure. Probable? I expect no.

It’s an XSory.

This could be awesome if true. I hope it works both ways though... the iPad would be a fantastic portable monitor.
Flipside, primary monitor and USB-C to an external monitor.
IPad Pro is starting to look more like an ARM macbook every day....

( I wonder ).
And certainly that is the intent. We know (surmise?) Apple has compiled Mac OS on arm -- the possibilities are very interesting.

I
I don't see that coming. There might be a lightning - USB-C cable / Adapter whatsoever.
But imagine people just buying the iPhone Xs with lightning and then the new iPad (Pro) which does not work with lightning anymore. They would be pretty annoyed.

What about wireless charging for the iPad?
It's incredibly frustrating not being able to use the iPad as an external display via wired connection.

Nah. They're moving toward a hybrid system much like Microsoft's Surface line, except they're going about it in a totally different way. Apple has locked down the tablet experience already; now they're making iOS more flexible and creating an ideal accessory environment for added flexibility/functionality. It makes perfect sense.

It's about time

Honestly, this would be a welcome change. The iPad doesn't exactly have the marketshare of the iPhone, so it would be a logical place to start to test out how USB-C would work with iOS devices. Of course, if they decide to go all in on USB-C, we'll have a repeat of the 30 pin to Lightning days where people complain about their stuff no longer working. 1 cord for everything is nice though, it's a bit annoying looking at which end of a USB-C/Lightning cable is the proper end as it is. Apple hasn't exactly been doing much with Lightning these days anyways, iirc, the iPhone still only supports USB 2.0 speeds (at least on the X/8) while the iPad Pro's have 16 pins in the lightning port to utilize USB 3.0. Not sure if this will remain to be the case with the Xs though.

I mean, they already use one port for the MBP anyways, sooo...
I think it makes perfect sense. they want you to remove your MacBook and use your iPad -- we're still going to want the real estate a big ass monitor can provide - by connecting via usb-c (and powering of course). I been writing' code for iPads all the live long day - and I can tell you my MacBook not responding to my touching the display is a huge annoyance -- anyone that says it feels wrong ergonomically has never used an iPad in landscape with a keyboard.

Why fight this -- once the iPad can do what we ALL need from our MacBooks -- it only makes sense to unify/merge/polymorph the two.

Don't get me wrong, I love macOS -- I'd much rather code for macOS all day than iOS -- but the ratio of eyeballs between the two is astronomical.

Why would the iPad need to have the same connector as the iPhone? What difference does it make?
Apple has proven it doesn't give a whit what we think about connectors...I agree with you.

you can't really use an external monitor without mouse support, right?

USB-C makes a lot of sense for the iPad. For the iPhone not so much. It may even be possible to connect external SSDs for editing. The A12X should be very powerful so it will become viable to do more professional stuff on them. Personally I won't be buying one since I don't use my iPad much. My iPhone is fine for general needs and my MBP handles the rest. I use it more for reading epubs than anything else.

I mean I know we've had lightning for a long time now (relatively speaking) but USB-C would work on an iPhone just fine. The only downside in moving to USB-C is we'd all have to buy new cables - which I typically do every year or so, my cats love lightning cables and no amount of bitter apple spray will keep them away from them for too long.

The upsides to USB-C are great - easier connection to newer computers, a standard connector for everything, etc. Even if the iPhone doesn't support external displays or other features that may come to iPad, it would still be nice to have one cable to charge your Mac, your iPhone, your iPad, your friend's Android phone, etc.

I mean I know we've had lightning for a long time now (relatively speaking) but USB-C would work on an iPhone just fine.

The problem is that the USB-C port is thicker than lightning. Not by much but still thicker. The iPad Pro with its much larger display is nearly a notebook replacement and it can take more advantage of peripherals than iPhone. I guess it would be cool to connect it to an external display along with a keyboard. Maybe they'll add it when the redesign the X chassis.

When you see an accessory with a lightning plug (or the 30 pin in past years) you know it is designed to work with iPad/iPhone devices. When you go to something more generic like usb, it becomes hard for the consumer to know if it will work with iOS or not.

A good example is some usb devices on the Mac, no way to tell from looking at the plug if macOS has the necessary drivers for support, or if a device is windows computers only.

That is why I think Apple would be reluctant to move away from the lightning connector for a more generic cable/port.

Apple may attempt to put a usb-c signal into the existing or upgraded lighting port/cable however, I think this is more likely (but not certain) perhaps 4K airplay may be revealed on future iPads instead.

iPhones have been getting thicker each generation since the 6, I doubt that's really a big issue but yes USB-C is a bit wider than Lightning. It's not like iPhones are exactly as thick as a Lightning connector anyway, like the iPod nano 6th gen was with it's 3.5mm jack.

Good point but I think it's not a big issue, honestly. The downside of not being able to mount a 6TB RAID array on your iPhone is overshadowed by the positives of using a single cable for everything in my book.
