Agreed, eventually. First they need to figure out why sometimes the AW doesn't ask for my unlock code when I put it on. Bad guy getting into my data is one thing. Bad guy getting into my house is another.
That is by design via a setting under the Passcode. It's called "Unlock with iPhone. You can turn that off if you want.
I rather like it.

wow.. bluetooth can do more than sync with idevices, just like nfc can be more than apple pay.

It'll probably come to the AW at some point, but not everyone has one. If it made any sense to limit functionality on the iPhone because it could be dropped, you could pretty much apply that to everything.

The day that Apple withholds a feature I want because they're afraid I'll drop the phone, I think I'll just move on.
I didn't mean to imply that it should be "eliminated" from the iPhone, I just meant that this should be a feature of the Watch and least at the same time as the iPhone. It would be tremendously useful and so much more functional, and safer. ;)

I already use this. Didn't need apple to implement this --- just scotch-taped my card to the phone.
Note that you cannot directly scotch-tape to the phone with metal back, because close location to metall renders nfc in the cards non-working.

Wtf. That looks horrible. It looks like you cut up used bandaids and stuck them to your phone.

Not needing a public transport card like in Denmark for example would also be nice. Just use your iPhone.

Doesn't seem at all odd, because Apple is extra-cautious. They certainly would rather avoid headlines about people doing Bad Things™ with it. "iPhone Let Rapist into Hotel Room" is not a headline they'd want, and with "Apple" and "iPhone" far bigger clickbait terms than "Android," the potential consequences of an incident are much larger. If it takes them a while longer to be satisfied that they "got it right" before releasing to the public... that's SOP for Apple.

I think it has more to do with wanting (most of) the installed base to support the feature. NFC was added in iPhone 6 if I’m not mistaken. By now most iPhone users are probably on a 6 or later, so most iPhone users will be able to use apps that incorporate NFC-based features.

I'd like to be able to do this with my car. My keys are already wireless, there's no reason my phone couldn't do this job.

Even use a TouchID style system for the starter button.

I feel like we're so close to being able to leave behind my wallet and keys. I just need to be able to put my drivers licence into my phone and I can leave everything at home.

I' ll wait with any purchase, till the reader is so inconspicuous as a small coin, everything else I find ugly

Only one thing though: this new feature might only work on iPhone models that support NFC Type F (Japanese market iPhone 7 and 7 Plus and worldwide iPhone 8, 8 Plus and X currently). And it's likely all the 2018 iPhone models, including the successor to the iPhone SE, will get the NFC Type F functionality needed to get this hotel room unlocking feature.

I want to put an NFC sticker on my car phone mount so my iPhone automatically connects to Bluetooth headunit and changes to driving mode/opens waze.

Completely possible, but if so I'm not sure why Apple Pay would have been implemented so much sooner.

The point of this is to reduce the number of items we carry. On the assumption that most people now have a smart phone, it's one more task an existing object can take over from separate objects (like carrying a separate phone and key card).

In some cases people will appreciate the environmental benefit that comes from eliminating millions of plastic key cards. Others will prize the reduced clutter in their pockets/thinner wallets, or the fact that they won't have an ID lanyard hanging off their necks or belts.

If you don't already have a smart phone or smart watch, this isn't likely to be the reason you finally go out and buy one. By all means, wait for the inconspicuous wearable you desire. Who knows, soon enough these things may be totally hidden subcutaneous implants that make theft/loss that much less likely. (Amidst our current craze for body piercings and tattoos, botox injections and hair implants, at least this would have a utilitarian purpose.)

This needs to be on the Apple Watch and not so much on a drop potential, glass shatter device as the iPhone.

Even better reason: Imagine being able to open your door by just waving your wrist at the door's NFC plate while still carrying a bunch of groceries in your hands. None of that "let me put this stuff down so I can get my keys (or phone) out of my pocket".

I have been waiting a while for the Yale Conexis L1 smart lock to support HomeKit, which will require a module. Does anyone know if the NFC built into this thing will be compatible with this new system via a firmware update? I know it supports key fobs which I assume uses NFC. If so I have wanted this for years and could finally ditch the keys!

Does no one realize that Apple’s implementation of this will be slower than a dedicated badge? Most likely you’ll have to unlock your phone first and summon the feature as you do with Apple Pay. Otherwise, it will make the phone even more attractive to theives.

Whic is why it would be so much better on Apple Watch.

I just had a shower thought about this the other day after i forgot my work pass once again. how awesome if you could add your work pass to wallet and tap it to gain entry? you would have a time stamp of you entering your building and the system / server would have one too. this would be a slacker's nightmare but for someone who likes order, this would be the ultimate hhhnnngggghh. i have so many creative thoughts i should be hired by apple's creative team
