And Google just helped develop one for Android in Portland.Makes sense since NYC is currently working on a digital metro card implementation

Uh... you have a work ID don't you?
Where I am our ID is our keycard. Heck we use the same swipes as the one in the particle picture.
That is by design via a setting under the Passcode. It's called "Unlock with iPhone. You can turn that off if you want.Agreed, eventually. First they need to figure out why sometimes the AW doesn't ask for my unlock code when I put it on. Bad guy getting into my data is one thing. Bad guy getting into my house is another.
I didn't mean to imply that it should be "eliminated" from the iPhone, I just meant that this should be a feature of the Watch and least at the same time as the iPhone. It would be tremendously useful and so much more functional, and safer. It'll probably come to the AW at some point, but not everyone has one. If it made any sense to limit functionality on the iPhone because it could be dropped, you could pretty much apply that to everything.
The day that Apple withholds a feature I want because they're afraid I'll drop the phone, I think I'll just move on.
I already use this. Didn't need apple to implement this --- just scotch-taped my card to the phone.
Note that you cannot directly scotch-tape to the phone with metal back, because close location to metall renders nfc in the cards non-working.

Doesn't seem at all odd, because Apple is extra-cautious. They certainly would rather avoid headlines about people doing Bad Things™ with it. "iPhone Let Rapist into Hotel Room" is not a headline they'd want, and with "Apple" and "iPhone" far bigger clickbait terms than "Android," the potential consequences of an incident are much larger. If it takes them a while longer to be satisfied that they "got it right" before releasing to the public... that's SOP for Apple.

I think it has more to do with wanting (most of) the installed base to support the feature. NFC was added in iPhone 6 if I’m not mistaken. By now most iPhone users are probably on a 6 or later, so most iPhone users will be able to use apps that incorporate NFC-based features.
I' ll wait with any purchase, till the reader is so inconspicuous as a small coin, everything else I find ugly
This needs to be on the Apple Watch and not so much on a drop potential, glass shatter device as the iPhone.
Does no one realize that Apple’s implementation of this will be slower than a dedicated badge? Most likely you’ll have to unlock your phone first and summon the feature as you do with Apple Pay. Otherwise, it will make the phone even more attractive to theives.
