A true lasting change occurred that day when Apple removed the egg from the salad emoji. A movement that spread around the world like wildfire, and millions of people said NO! NO, I will not stand to have an egg in my salad any longer. The thoughtful discussion, artful subtlety, and eloquence of a missing egg from a salad emoji shatterd my previous world view and now I will no longer eat meat!
Similarly, no person has ever shot again because the gun emoji was turned into a water pistol. The Crips and Bloods laid down their arms and swore never to shoot anybody ever again because their gun emoji turned into a water pistol. The very reasons for gun violence were overturned that day. Thank you Apple, for changing the world and getting all of us to 'Think Different'.

Said nobody ever...

Every. Single. Time. There’s an emoji article, you get the slew of people who exclaim something along the lines of “Stop working on emojis when there’s X bug still around!!1!”

And every single time there’s the people who explain that the team that works on emojis isn’t the same team that works on code or fixing bugs. But it falls on deaf ears.

Im a graphic designer for a company myself, and I’m just imagining my boss coming in one day to say “Hey, stop working on those images. Come fix this problem that’s deep within our complex product even though you have no expertise in the engineering field.” Lol.

Well your boss could fire you and allocate resources elsewhere, right? Just saying.

Turn all accounts off. wait a few minutes for the cleanup to complete, turn all back on again. Fixed all of the mail issues I was having. Issues were, mail not loading, app super slow, no notifications, blank emails, hanging when making new email. (I have 6 mail accounts including iCloud and exchange).

Didn’t work. I even removed my account and re-added it. Now my emails are not being marked as read when I open them. I have to open each one twice before it shows that it was read.

Why are emojis so important and given so much attention? Really, who needs a Banjo emoji or an abacus ?

Never said he is doing it himself.
Also, guess what CEO had an almost granular control over the company.... I'll give you a hint; not Tim.

So not the one who has driven the share price to record highs? As CEO of a business that’s how you’re measured.

Well your boss could fire you and allocate resources elsewhere, right? Just saying.

That probably makes even less sense.

Then who does the graphic designer’s job once the bug is fixed? One of the coders? Do you just re-hire the graphic designer once the bug is fixed? How is that going to look if you fire a graphic designer because a coder, someone from a completely different department, screwed up somewhere and let a major bug slip through?

You can’t just “shut off” certain departments and think suddenly other departments will get a boost in resources/productivity. That’s not how businesses work.

Honestly I don't know why Tim doesn't just fire his office cleaner and hire another software guy instead. Maybe they could have endless farms of genetically enhanced cyborg software engineers working on email bugs instead of people cleaning the floors! Imagine how quickly the bugs would get fixed eh?! Fire all the cleaners in Apple Park and their replacements could write and debug iOS 14 from scratch in about an hour. Come to think of it lets fire everyone and replace them with software guys. Including all the Apple Store staff, lawyers, accountants etc. etc. etc.

Apple are worth a trillion dollars. I'm reasonably certain they are not short of software engineers. You can't fix problems in half the time by asking twice as many people to have a go. That is not how software development works. In fact it isn't how anything works. You don't get a thousand man-hour job done in one hour by hiring a thousand men.
iOS had to be updated within a week of release because of all the bugs. Catalina beta is a huge mess. They do need to hire someone who can come in and fix what is clearly wrong at Apple.

Why would Tim Cook be focussing on IOS updates? He’s the CEO of one of the largest companies in the world. None of this is his domain.
Do you think the head of the army is making sure everyone is well stocked with paper clips?
a CEO has to have some knowledge of what is going on in you company. That is why Steve was such a great CEO. He was intimately involved in each of the products and made sure the products were the best they could be. Tim doesn't do this and we see how the quality of the hardware/software has changed.

Surely Apple has the money for 20,000 software engineers plus an emoji artist? Or do you think that 20,001st programmer is the key to fixing the mail bug?

Throwing more devs at a software problem is rarely the solution. Brooks’ The Mythical Man-Month is illuminating, even as it approaches its 50th year in print.
Honestly, I appreciate your push back. No doubt Apple has the money to eliminate their many bugs.

But iTunes just downloaded 300 podcast episodes that I didn't want (again!) so I need to take time to delete them all (again!), and that takes priority over commenting on this latest MR emoji announcement. Good day!

iOS 13.1 had been in development for months prior to the public release of iOS 13. There were four public betas alone. iOS 13.0 had to be wrapped-up for production some time ago so that it could be loaded onto new iPhones and shipped around the world. 13.1 was always going to be released very quickly. I had it on my iPad for weeks on end prior.

This stuff is now unimaginably complex to the layman. No software is ever bug-free. If you waited until it was, it would never ship. Ever. This is the nature of software development. At some point 13.0 had to be signed off for production and shipped. Meanwhile 13.1 was already being used for several weeks by beta testers.

Anyone expecting no bugs in this day and age just doesn't understand software. If the absolute most stable OS is what you need then it's best to wait for the point releases of anything.

now this is important! who cares if my mail notifications still don't work!

Curious, are you having notification issues with the built in app? I don’t use the built in but I’m having the same problem with Edison Mail ever since I upgraded to the Pro Max. I tried everything to fix, no luck. Was hoping 13.1 fixed the problem but didn’t.

It’s always funny reading the comments section. It’s as if Apple is not making other improvement because some Emojis are updated.

What's astonishing is there are many people on MR who continue to believe the Apple employees who integrate released emojis into iOS, and the engineers who design various Apple hardware and software products, are one in the same. Even though it is pointed out on each emoji release that's not the case.

Some people refuse to learn. That's the really sad part.

300 episodes, yikes. That would absolutely piss me off. Especially the second (or more) time around—with the prospect of it happening again 😡 🤬

There’s no easy answer; there are a lot of factors that conspire to make it impossible to ship bug-free code. From an inside perspective, you prioritize and knock out the showstoppers, and work down the list. When you have to ship with some larger known bugs—or worse, when new bugs present after the gm is released—it sucks. No one is happy... not QA, not the devs, not support, not management and obviously not the customers.

Hopefully Apple will get a 13.1.1 released asap that addresses the issues you, and others, are having. I’m sure Apple can do better, and I hope they do.

How can Apple care about this emojis, when Macbooks are a disaster and when iMacs are so old it is embarrasing.

This is Apple true INNOVATION... they should have announce these in a special event!!

See my post, #147, just above above

Don't use them then. Crisis averted :);):(:confused::cool::p:D:eek::oops::rolleyes:o_O

I completely understand that Jim and, on a personal level, I agree with you! I avoid using them completely (unless ironically in commenting on posts on random internet forums!) so it doesn't affect me directly. But as a writer and lover of language, it troubles me that the highly-evolved beauty of modern language (any language, not just English) is being somewhat violated by the dumbing down that Emojis are just one example of.

It's a personal issue...I get that! But this kind of bandwagon jumping can have what will be (like the exponential rise of social media) long-term, lasting and negative consequences on our society. Chasing after the latest trends to boost sales is a sound business strategy but, like social media as I mentioned, there are unintended side-effects to these things that are often seen as "harmless gimmicks". Just my opinion of course...but one which I hold strongly.

When there is a shortcut, most people will take it, especially if it's "fun" and trendy. Most do this without thinking of the long-term outcomes weighed against the short-term "benefits". And there are always long-term consequences...good or bad.

Jeeeeesus! You know what else helps get your tone across? A decent command of the language that you speak is a good place to start! Please explain to me where an Emojisquito will help you get a point across, or clarify the meaning which you are struggling to get across in words alone?

As other have pointed out, Emoji and their numerous in-bred offspring are a huge step backwards in linguistic terms. Many have made comparisons to hieroglyphs and I agree that written language has developed for thousands of years since then. And then came the classic "smiley face" :) type abbreviations which were annoying but at least conveyed only a fairly limited range of emotions. A simple :) or :( at the end of a sentence could add an extra layer of detail. But having the huge range of Emojis that we do now adds nothing!

If I needed - for some reason - to talk about sloths then using the sloth Emoji doesn't add any nuance, it's just ridiculous! It probably takes longer to actually find that particular Emoji than it does to type s-l-o-t-h! Want to use the sloth Emoji to convey that somebody is slow or lazy? Sure, it can convey that, but not everybody will interpret it the same way. Does it mean slow? Does it mean lazy? So rather than actually helping to clarify by adding nuance it can (and often does) simply create ambiguity!

So, if you cba to read the whole thing, the tl:dr version is if you sit there thinking "idk how 2 explain this properly" and you resort to Emojis to try to explain, don't be surprised if the person the other end looks at it as is all, like, "WTF? IDEK...this is stupid AF. SMH" So much for evolution...

I'm not annoyed by the occasional emoji but when young relatives and women friends use them to form sentences I don't reply.

I can understand why a child would find it entertaining to decorate his messages and decode those from friends. I can see how it might be a simple bonding activity between parent and teenager. What I don't respect is when people use them in professional correspondence. Or when people use them after opinions to shield themselves from reactions or patronize the PC crowd.

When we communicate in person, body language and the modulation of our voices help convey nuances that words alone can not. Also, in this day and age, many of us are engaged in written communication with people whose native language is different from our own. We can not always count on a shared mutual understanding of a particular arrangement of words

Emojis can facilitate written communication by providing a visual aid that helps replace the missing facial expressions and tones of voice.
They are not meant to be a substitute for command of one’s language. They’re just little helpers.

And I don’t think I sat and sang the praises of toast and sloth emojis, but if you choose to think I did, I don’t mind. Praise be to sloths!

I greatly admire your grumpiness. I need to skip coffee until noon and step on a wet cat hair ball in socked feet before I can achieve such exquisite levels of grumpiness. I hate soggy socks so much! That really pushes me over the edge!

Surely you understand that this is about the efficacious allocation of limited resources.

Imagine your boss coming in one day to say "Hey, stop working on those images. We're letting you go so we can hire a Software Bug Allocation Strategy Coordinator."
You lost me at “limited resources...

Surely you understand this is an article about Apple??
Imagine your boss saying: “keep working on what you’re working on... we have tens of thousands of employees; I’m sure it’s not even a vague concern of yours what every single last one of them, outside of this department, is working on”.
