Apple's the one propagating the "lie". How is it out of context?
TF you talkin about?
How is it a clear direction? No other smartwatch makes any demands of having a particular phone. Apple could have made the Apple Watch work without an iPhone from day one if it wanted to. It's clearly a deliberate ploy to tie people into an ecosystem with artificial constraints. There is zero evidence Apple ever intends to drop the iPhone requirement.

The direction is clear from the simple observation that every release of watchOS so far has further reduced the dependance on iPhone, with watchOS 6 finally bringing a local App Store this Fall.

Why they didn't make the Watch fully independent from day one you ask? Tell me, why didn't they make the iPhone fully independent from day one? I'll tell you: Because it's not trivial. Same goes for the Watch.
Makes perfect sense to let the platform mature and in the process let it grow into independence.

I hear you and really hope that you’re right. But I just don’t believe it. For the iPhone, the tech was kinda available in separate devices. But the jump to glasses just feels too big for the current, non-Steve Jobs, bin Jonny ive Apple to make.
The AirPods don’t even recognize 20% of my hey Siri commands. I have yet to see a single AR application with object occlusion. Not sure if the Hololens does it - but did you see how bulky that thing is? I mean yea- If they could pull off everything that the 2nd gen holo lens does but in a MUCH sleeker form factor, I can see potential there. But I also think, as much as I want this kind of tech, that MS was smart when they turned to big business first..
"But the jump to glasses just feels too big for the current, non-Steve Jobs, bin Jonny ive Apple to make."

What an absurd comment. This is what Apple users expect of Apple & that's the cultural mindset Jobs instilled in Apple. If Apple doesn't make big leaps, people say Apple doesn't innovate. If Apple does go for big leaps, people say this is too big of jump for Apple to make. Seriously, make up your minds.

Lol, so many anti-Apple people on here feel threatened by success. Best selling smart watch on the planet? Still nitpick (despite Samsung and Wear OS being abysmal failures). Now moving to AR? Let’s yell and demand Apple stay stagnant because our favorite companies aren’t ready for it. Pathetic.
[doublepost=1567444229][/doublepost]Also funny hearing people complain that you have to have an iPhone to use the Apple Watch. If you don’t like it, don’t buy one. The rest of us don’t mind.

So you're talking about using the glasses as a screen rather than a camera. Why on earth would a doctor view a remote operation through AR glasses? What is he looking at locally that he wants the information to appear superimposed onto?

It's a complete non-starter. The doctor would use a high resolution screen or possibly some VR goggles, not AR.

Only non-starter is your ridiculous comments bashing a technology you haven’t see or can’t comprehend how it’ll be used.

Samsung has 120% annual growth in smartwatches to 11% market share = "abysmal failure"

HomePod has 5% market share so that makes it... ? Catastrophic failure? Apocalyptic failure?

I'm not the one who thinks VR and AR are interchangeable terms.

What makes you think the success of a product can be boiled down to market share or growth thereof?

What makes you think the HomePod was intended to compete with 50 $ smart speakers to begin with?

The tech for the iPhone didn’t exist in 2007. Apple had to invent it. Critical technology from multi touch to an entire operating system had to be invented from scratch.

With all due respect, please name even one hardware technology that didn't exist in 2007 that Apple had to invent for the iPhone to become possible. I would argue that all of the hardware features that helped the iPhone to become an instant hit certainly did exist (multi touch screen display, a cpu powerful enough to drive the device, cellular/wireless technology).

You are right about the software part. The only thing that really made the iPhone stand apart (besides being a flagship device from Apple) was that they were the first ones to really tie all of those technologies together into a coherent package with the advent of iOS. iOS was the real star, and helped cement the 'it just works' experience that made the iPhone such a hit. Now Apple did have to 'invent' that for the iPhone as we know it to be possible, and I would say that was the real difference maker.

So I did some researching on AR in surgery (since I’m unfamiliar with this field, not being an actual surgeon and all).

One use of AR during surgery is taking data from previously done CT scans or MRI scans to build an accurate model of the actual patient before surgery including things such as scars or other abnormalities. During surgery this previously recorded data can be superimposed on the AR glasses to provide useful information to the surgeon during the actual procedure. The camera on the AR goggles simply sees the current view of the patient and can adjust content as required. No need for the AR goggles to have some super-high res camera.

Completely debunks your original post (and follow up posts) claiming that AR can’t be used for surgery without having specialized cameras on them.

Also interesting that the demo I saw regarding technicians was similar - using outside data gathered from other cameras/devices to superimpose in the AR glasses. This is what’s possible when you use your imagination for positive things instead of wasting it lying about why things can’t be used the way you think.

If you bothered to read the original discussion it was about a surgeon assisting from a remote location not being present in the room with the patient.

Nice attempt at deflection. It’s irrelevant if the surgery is remote or in person. AR can provide useful information to the surgeon. You being pedantic and upset you’ve been proven wrong doesn’t change this basic fact.

So google glass users are call glass holes, what do apple AR glass users get called?
[doublepost=1567447612][/doublepost]People were punching people in the face if they were wearing google glasses cause people thought they were being recorded. How is apple going to prevent this? People don't like their privacy being invaded. Does apple not know this?

I could see a removable device that can be clipped onto the frame when needed. I'd love to have a virtual display for my glasses in any event.

So a notch for glasses?

It's good they call it 'headset' so it's not associated with 'glasshole'.

They couldn't break into the wireless charging pad market. Or the smart speaker market. Or the social platform market. Or the digital maps market. Or the voice assistant market.

I get your joke.

Yes, Apple has had failures.

Now that we got out of the way... want to be serious?
Cool... here goes: you don’t think Apple could make a wireless charging pad EXACTLY like the umpteen thousands out there.... just because they tried to do something completely different, that isn’t possible right now & nobody else has succeeded at either, because the tech simply isn’t there yet? Of course not. You know for certain they could. You think Apple couldn’t find some way to sell your data, & use all that money to pay for a social network, just because their cheesy freebies sucked? Of course not. You know that if Apple had all their money AND all of Facebook’s money, & 1/2 of it was literally only designated to “make a social media platform that pays for itself by selling user data” that it would succeed. I didn’t even realize there was a digital maps or voice assistant “market”.... I thought those were both free services. Let me pose you a question: ok, what’s better.... Apple maps now vs Google Maps say.... 2 years ago? How about Siri now, vs Alexa 2 years ago?
I’m hoping that you could at least admit that in those areas, while Apple may lag- it’s roughly 12 months or so.
So.... as I said, it’s up to you! Free maps & voice assistant with no catch, not sacrificing your privacy- impressively, only slightly behind the same “free” maps & voice assistant, that completely sell out your privacy for that marginal lead.
Further, you don’t think they could catch up in both of those areas near immediately, if they were to drop the privacy commitment?
Of course not. You know they could.

12 months! Are you joking? Apple is best case more like 7 years behind Google maps and 3 years behind Alexa, based on that's how long I've been using those services but still don't use Apple maps or Siri.

Plus Amazon gave me the option to turn off people listening to my Alexa requests. Apple never respected me enough to give me that option, so I have to turn Siri off completely.

Google also allowed me to turn off location history in maps. When I tried Apple maps recently when I got my iPad it started creepily suggesting places to me based on where I had been, so I dumped it immediately.

The idea of Apple respecting privacy is the biggest lie ever. They collect more data than anyone, they just keep it for themselves to exploit rather than sell it to other companies.

At the end of the day, they’ll produce beautifully designed glasses that will be driven by a ****** subpar voice assistant.

This post is full of so many lies I don’t know which one to pick. How about this one:

They collect more data than anyone,

I don’t know how anyone could post such an ignorant comment. Let’s see, where does Google collect data from that Apple doesn’t:

  • Google search, the most popular search engine.
  • Gmail, the most popular email client.
  • Android, the most popular mobile OS.
  • Google Maps, the most popular map system.
  • Chrome, the most popular browser.
  • YouTube, the most popular video/content service.
  • Embedded advertising/tracking code injected into millions of websites.

Curious what your purpose is at MR when you post nothing but lies all the time.

AR glasses... Yet more nonsense from Clueless Cook. Hey, Tim, how about instead of creating luxury toys for the rich, how about you bring back tools for regular people such as AirPort Extreme, iPhone SE, and Apple Cinema Display?

Airport. Why? Specialist companies like Netgear do WiFi incredibly well now for a lot less than Apple would charge. And Mesh WiFi is where it’s at now.

iPhone SE? Why? They have the XR - I you mean a smaller screen phone that is unlikely now. Or one with 3 generation old chip. Also unlikely.

Apple Cinema Display. This I agree with and I am sure that a cheaper monitor will come soon.

As someone that has worked for Apple Privacy in the past.. You are talking complete balls.

Load of rubbish in this post. Apple maps is getting better but it’s a lot behind the scenes. 7 years is bunkum.

What do you have to say to Siri that interferes with your privacy “Hey Siri, texts mum to bring me down a Yoohoo”

I was looking at the mock-up and thinking that it could clip on the temple and ditch the camera. That's what upsets people most.

Without the camera how will the AR App know what you are looking at?
