At the end of the day, they’ll produce beautifully designed glasses that will be driven by a ****** subpar voice assistant.

Seriously don’t get peoples issue with Siri... Works perfectly for me. But then again I speak properly.

With all due respect, please name even one hardware technology that didn't exist in 2007 that Apple had to invent for the iPhone to become possible. I would argue that all of the hardware features that helped the iPhone to become an instant hit certainly did exist (multi touch screen display, a cpu powerful enough to drive the device, cellular/wireless technology).

Well the 2007 has 57 specific hardware patents and numerous other ones linked to hardware and software.

Multi touch KIND of existed. On large format displays. Nothing remotely small existed and all phone touch screens were pressure based not touch. Hell they invented pinch to zoom. Swipe as switch. Battery and power controllers are of massive importance.. The HTC fliptops Windows monstrosities lasted about 2 hours.

While Tesla didn’t invent the electric car all the bits existed elsewhere and some non starters like the GM electric that literally was buried and killed by the oil industry... Tesla actually really did invent the electric car.

They couldn't break into the wireless charging pad market. Or the smart speaker market. Or the social platform market. Or the digital maps market. Or the voice assistant market.
Apple invented multi-touch?

In effect yes. They bought and developed fingerworks that created modern multitouch.

12 months! Are you joking? Apple is best case more like 7 years behind Google maps and 3 years behind Alexa, based on that's how long I've been using those services but still don't use Apple maps or Siri.

Plus Amazon gave me the option to turn off people listening to my Alexa requests. Apple never respected me enough to give me that option, so I have to turn Siri off completely.

Google also allowed me to turn off location history in maps. When I tried Apple maps recently when I got my iPad it started creepily suggesting places to me based on where I had been, so I dumped it immediately.

The idea of Apple respecting privacy is the biggest lie ever. They collect more data than anyone, they just keep it for themselves to exploit rather than sell it to other companies.

Siri beat Alexa in a recent scientific test.
How long you are using the alternate services is hardly a useful datapoint.
Apple collecting more data than anyone is simply a lie.

The tech for the iPhone didn’t exist in 2007. Apple had to invent it. Critical technology from multi touch to an entire operating system had to be invented from scratch.

Apple has been working on these glasses for at least the past 4 years that we know of, probably longer if you account for their interest in AR going back 6 or more years. The primary technology is retinal projection. That tech in fact already exists. Apple will have poured billions in R&D into making what already exists into what will feel like technology from the future when introduced.

The iPhone did not feel possible in 2007. There was simply nothing like it nor since then for years after. The trinity of Watch + AirPods + Glasses have the potential to repeat that surge in technological advance.

A demo of a multi-touch screen. This was published Feb 3, 2006, a year before first iPhone was released.

Here is a history of multi-touch screen

http://www.billbuxton.com/multitouchOverview.html

I found it very funny that when Palm Pre / WebOS was release with multi-touch feature, Apple was angry and claimed that the company was infringing its IP as if trying to say that they own the multi-touch patent.

Of course Apple is not the first smartphone :) Apple did not invent it but it maybe safe to say that Apple innovated :) like with iPhone. Before iPhone, smartphones audience are those who are in the business sector or basically a device for work but with iPhone it was marketed for everyone. Before iPhone there was Palm OS and Windows CE but they don't look as good as an iPhone. Palm OS UI has the same UI concept with iOS however the graphics are not that good looking because the screen resolution is low. My point is Apple did not invent things.

By the way, iPhone was released 2007 and in 2009 Palm Pre was released and it already have wireless charging with magnets in its back that will make it not fall off from its wireless charger. But still we can't say that Palm invented wireless charging because the tech already existed and is being experimented before they used it, however we can say that with Palm innovation on wireless charging they started and popularize it on smartphones.

Instead of a folding phone to get a larger display, simply use your AR glasses to have a beautiful, large display right in front of you. Everyone who travels regularly on a plane will get it. Lay back and the display is perfectly positioned for the movie. Walk through the airport get updates and follow the virtual indicators to the shuttle. They will sell millions upon millions.

Wow, these will be a great tool in combating "Unconscious Bias" - I could get my wife a pair and every time she looked at me she would be reminded what a great catch I am ..... ;-)

Apple Cinema Display and the AirPort Extreme are for the regular people? Oh, man... I am so broke!
I'm not defending the original post that you responded to, but:
The AirPort Express really is a uniquely useful device at its $99 list price while it still existed. Not only does it work way better as a WiFi router than the average junk you get from your Internet service provider/cable company, but it is cheaper than something like Eero for extension in a larger house. Most importantly it now supports AirPlay 2 - this means, that you can plug it in via TOSlink to just about any receiver made in the last 20+ years and now have your old existing sound system(s) be wireless for all your Apple devices.

Your alternatives without the AirPort Express would be to buy HomePods or to buy a brand new, expensive receiver that supports AirPlay 2. The fact is, if you have nice speakers and a good receiver it is something you would be happy to use for decades and the AirPort Express suddenly turns it into a modern, cutting edge device for wireless audio.

AR glasses... Yet more nonsense from Clueless Cook.
You mean like the Apple Watch?

Hey, Tim, how about instead of creating luxury toys for the rich, how about you bring back tools for regular people such as AirPort Extreme, iPhone SE, and Apple Cinema Display.
Yeah, those products really propelled Apple to its current position.

Why let your Apple fan boy optimization get in the way of the truth? If people walk in everyday life with (any) glasses you're gonna get advertisments:

Oh that portraid was painted by an 1800 century person who stayed in this hotel
(AD) hotel has 50% off if you book now

Hmmn I'm walking down a city street
(AD) MacDonalds is having a 80% sale for people who viewed that portrait

Etc etc

I think it would be awesome if they turned out to be round and rimless...

"But the jump to glasses just feels too big for the current, non-Steve Jobs, bin Jonny ive Apple to make."

What an absurd comment. This is what Apple users expect of Apple & that's the cultural mindset Jobs instilled in Apple. If Apple doesn't make big leaps, people say Apple doesn't innovate. If Apple does go for big leaps, people say this is too big of jump for Apple to make. Seriously, make up your minds.
Im not saying they shouldn’t do leaps like this, of course they should, i just don’t feel like they are capable of doing so because they lack a visionary who will push them over that edge.

Apple has long been rumored to be working on an augmented reality headset or glasses, and despite a recent DigiTimes report claiming the project had been suspended, documentation seen by MacRumors in an internal build of iOS 13 suggests development of a head-mounted augmented reality display has continued.

Apple Glasses concept

Namely, internal builds of iOS 13 include a "STARTester" app that can switch in and out of a head-mounted mode, presumably to replicate the functionality of an augmented reality headset on an iPhone for testing purposes. There are two head-mounted states for testing, including "worn" and "held."

There is also an internal README file in iOS 13 that describes a "StarBoard" system shell for stereo AR-enabled apps, which implies a headset of some kind. The file also suggests Apple is developing an augmented reality device codenamed "Garta," possibly as one of several prototypes under the "T288" umbrella.

Digging further into the internal iOS 13 code, we uncovered numerous strings related to a so-called "StarBoard mode" and various "views" and "scenes." Many of the strings reference augmented reality, including "ARStarBoardViewController" and "ARStarBoardSceneManager."

Multiple sources have claimed that Apple plans to release augmented reality glasses as early as 2020, including analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, CNET, and Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, who in November 2017 reported that Apple's headset would run a custom iOS-based operating system dubbed "rOS" for "reality operating system."

Apple CEO Tim Cook has talked up the prospect of augmented reality several times, saying he views AR as "profound" because the technology "amplifies human performance instead of isolating humans."

Steve Moser contributed to this report.

Update: Within the internal Find My app bundle that MacRumors exclusively shared last week, there is an icon depicting what appears to be an AR or VR headset that looks similar to the Google Cardboard.

mockmode-b389.jpg

There are "on" and "off" versions of the icon in white and gray respectively, and each has "MockMode" and "B389" in its filename, which is the codename for Apple's item tracking tags. As such, this icon could simply represent the expected AR mode in the Find My app and likely does not depict Apple's actual headset.

If the glasses are like that, it’s cool, lite weight and easy to use.

You should have convinced more of your friends to buy them

They all sold very well, especially the iPhone SE. Even this year, when the iPhone SE went on sale again in Apple’s online Clearance Store, they sold out very fast the few separate times it went on sale. Cook sees the demand, but he doesn’t do anything about it. Hence the name Clueless Cook.

You say “hence the name” as if that name has caught on.

There is no demand. Selling out a few clearance items does not indicate the wide spread demand that would be needed to make it worth the resources apple would have to spend on it.
