Apple announced that the entire United States will have Look Around by the end of this year. And Look Around is arguably far better than Street View. If anything, Google has some catching up to do.

That’s insane. It’s scheduled to be done by the end of the year.

The new Maps data is scheduled to be rolled out to the U.S. by the end of the year, and rolling out to other countries next year.

There has been no announcements for when Look Around will be available nationwide in the U.S., but I wouldn’t expect it by the end of the year.

Look Around is great, much more enjoyable to use than Street View but Apple will need to expand quickly.

Not sure why it is taking apple so long either. They have had their cars going around the UK for about 4 years now but no "Look Around" here yet, not even in London.

Currently this look-around feature is a non-event for 98% of iPhone users, and hardly worth bragging about.
It will literally takes decades at the pace Apple is going. Google would of mapped internally every home and business by that time. I guess a minuscule start is still a start and you gotta start at some point.

I really like Apple Lookaround, but Google not only uses cars, but also trekkers, trolleys, snowmobiles and three-wheelers for places where cars can’t drive around. Also. There’s Google 360 views already, for hot spots (read certain buildings) and I expect Google to expand it globally to all 360 views, but lets not forget that this feature also requires a lot of mobile data. And not every country has fast mobile coverage. Not even in de USA. This is where 2D comes in handy, and Google has helped me tremendously with StreetView. For example. Back in 2000 something, I was looking for a gas station in Barcelona (Spain) in the middle of the night, somewhere nearby the airport, and was unable to find it, then we used Google StreetView and bang! I’m sure that Apple’s lookaround will do the same for me some time in the future so thank you Google and thank you Apple!

This!

Apple NEVER said Look Around would be available by the end of the year in the US...just updated Maps. It makes sens that Look Around will not be far behind based on the launches so far, but definitely not by the end of the year. It is a separate layer

I can only assume they're trying to reach their goal of the whole US by EOY and then maybe release Look Around in major European cities all at once. That'd be great, one can be hopeful 😪

Yup. It’s very impressive, but it’s going to take decades to catch up with street view at the current rate.

That's not how this works LOL. They are introducing a new feature and making sure it is properly integrated, and then it accelerates.

With all those iPhones taking pictures that have the location recorded, the images could be used to build up a look around the world relatively quickly (with permission from each user, perhaps even have an Apple app for contributing). The current rate will only ever cover a minority of the world, and will never be up-to-date.

That's not how this works. And Apple has already video mapped many countries covering major portions of the planet. Indeed, they are now moving on and doing pedestrian mapping in the US, UK and elsewhere.

Has Apple Maps ever improved that slow speed of navigation? I remember the delay of passing the street when it told me to turn right. Love Waze and Google maps how accurate they are 99.1% of the time.
That's more of a function of GPS reception and driving speed and not so much a bug. It happens to me consistently in certain areas no matter which app I use.

looks pretty damn good. it's too bad that moving down the street is super slow.
Click a little higher and further into the distance and it flies down the road quickly.

Just saw some places with look around in Los Angeles and it is not so shabby. I like it. About time now. Playing catch up with Google. Look around really helps when people are traveling from out of town and need to find something.

And Look Around is arguably far better than Street View.

How?

Routing and traffic is already better in iOS 13. It uses information pooled from every iOS device that’s on the road to build an accurate traffic data map. I’ve already found it to be way more accurate than in past versions. I recently saw an obstacle added in the map that AppleMaps suggested was probably an accident up ahead and as I got there, not only was it correct but the accident had just happened. iOS devices in other people’s cars must’ve interpreted these cars suddenly slowing down and then going around an obstacle, as a crash and immediately added it to Maps for everyone.

Apple’s points of interest will also soon improve dramatically, leveraging the same technology used in Look Around to read signs and use machine learning to determine stores, restaurants, banks, etc and match them to online listings.

So Apple's stealing your information for its own benefit? Where's the permission setting for this tracking?

I live in a pretty small Ontario town east of Toronto and saw the Apple maps car drive through my neighborhood not too long ago. I think they plan on expanding this very quickly.

I saw them in Boston too a few weeks ago.

Meanwhile, over here in Japan, my house doesn't even exist on Apple Maps, yet Google has street view of it, updated fairly recently. I have up-to-the-minute traffic info and detailed business locations on Google Maps too. Honestly, I reckon Apple Maps seems only to be useful if you live in California, or I guess NYC. For those of us who don't live in a major city in the US, it's complete rubbish.

So what, I had issues with GM last year in Austria, to be exact 3 times, send me the wrong way, didn't know where I had to go, Apple Maps showed me the way correctly.

Fact Google Maps is not faultless, Apple Maps in Europe is good, if not better than GM.

As for the article, look around is amazing, yet I don't believe I will use it, just no need for it, and it might take forever for them to map smaller cities in Europe.
