I already love my iPad Pro as is but please give us mouse support!
This would finally put the iPad Pro in the same league as Microsoft's Surface Pro!
I know Apple probably doesn't want iPads to cannibalize Mac Sales but even Apple can't predict people's buying decisions and this would at least make Apple a more likable company by giving people the freedom of choice.

If it only supports Apple Mouse then don’t bother. Making the pointing device unusable because it’s flipped upside down so you can access the charging port is dumb.

Yeah, iDrive is pretty awesome. And the 4 series doesn't even have the best version that is going the current 7, 5 and new 3 series.
It's interesting seeing people asking for split screen and other stuff iDrive already does in an elegant way.

BMW and some other car manufacturers have been developing their phone, multimedia, and mapping solutions for over a decade. They are light years ahead of CarPlay.

Yeah, that is true but not all of them (i would say most of them) learned anything all this time.

No matter what they do you’ll still have Mac users complaining that they can’t go iPad Pro even though they never give a reason why they need to go iPad Pro.

OK I'll Bite.

I'm a photographer and want to be able to plug an SSD into an iPad Pro and then copy off files to a folder of my choice without Photos or any other crappy app getting in the way. When I get home I want to copy the files off the iPad and onto my NAS. Not much to expect, but I'm not expecting it any time before hell freezes over.

Is this a valid reason?

That was a huge mistake by Apple to do that. They should have put the port at the front with the option to plug in to charge and use at the same time. If iPad Pro's could support a mouse that would be a step in the right direction to dump a laptop. I personally would need to see more then mouse support before I'd dump a laptop but again step in the right direction.

But will it allow me to change my default web browser and email client, finally, after 12 years of iPhone/iOS? Hah! Probably not. Apple doesn't seem to care about user experience anymore; they only care about controlling the lock-in experience. They intentionally nerf third party compatibility. Just look at the Metal2/Vulkan fiasco, as well as locked-in drivers for Bootcamp so that Windows performs poorly.

Right now, my biggest complaint about CarPlay is that the sound cuts out for a heartbeat every once in a while (2 minutes? 4 minutes? I dunno).

I ****ing hate my bmw’s infomatics. Touch, rotate, move like a joystick, wait why did the screen split, what do those little ****ing icons on the left mean, **** the map is screwed up because i accidentally tapped the top of the knob, ...

I just have a couple of small things that bother me which don't really require a full number release to be honest:

- hidden album in photos should be password/face ID protected (whats the point of having a hidden album if anyone can just click on it and open it?)

- Let me control the alarm volume independently of the ringer volume... I have to remember to set my ringer low every night or the jarring sound will wake up the whole house in the morning

- The annoying HUD volume thingy (come on apple!)

- If no notifications to look at let face ID take you straight to the home screen, why the need to swipe up? (at the very least make it an option in settings, since some people may not want this)

That's all I can think of right now... I'm very easy to please lol

It's not the physical IO that is the constraint. Neither is Apple forcing you to only use proprietary input devices. You can easily connect a keyboard via USB C and bluetooth. (I've tried both.) Apple just conciously decided to constrain the software so you can't use a classical pointing device. If Apple allowed this it wouldn't matter if you connected a Logitec mouse or a magic mouse.

If you’re easy to please then you’re on the wrong web site. Only grumpy displeased people are allowed. Yes that includes me.

Sounds promising, but a lot will happen between now and June and Apple isn’t as nimble as they used to be. I’m just used to them falling behind and features get pushed back another year. I just hope that’s not the case this year since it was rumored that some of these things were pushed back from last year so they will hopefully be mature designs that solve real problems and increase productivity.

And one of the touted features of IOS 12 was not only late but is currently shutdown pending a major bug fix...o_O

Dark mode will be great. Unless you’re sitting in bright sunlight, the current tendency to have vast amounts of gleaming white UI on sharp and bright HD screens is getting a bit much.

I’ve got a 645ci BMW that doesn’t have CarPlay but the infotainment system is not good. I love CarPlay in my Honda Accord I use for my 2 hour round trip to work.

If I was older I probably wouldn’t like CarPlay. If you’re younger than 40 CarPlay is superior to other manufacturers in my experience and people I know.

That is a cell phone service issue. Don’t use Sprint and problem solved. I’ve never had CarPlay drop out one time since August 2015.

The modern smartphone age:

Take selfies
Add filters to selfies
Send Emojis
Be an Emoji
View "challenge" videos
Record "challenge" videos and get injured, hence the Apple Watch with fall detection
Play Fortnite
Stream Fortnite
"Like" something
View "Likes"
No "snake" game due to is complexity.

iPhone doesn't need to be smart anymore.

I don’t have a vehicle with CarPlay but it is definitely on my list of what I want in a car, if we get one in the future, and a replacement stereo system with Car Play if we don’t.

I am a LOT older than 40, what makes you think age factors into this? Not trying to be a smart ass I’m just curious.

It’s almost 7 years old now, but I have a Toyota Camry that has Entune and Toyota’s nag system and it sucked from day one. The map is DVD based and it was already out of date the first time I drove the car home. I bought it new. After a few attempts at using the voice control to select songs/phone numbers/apps I quickly gave up, only using it to demonstrate to people who were curious why I didn’t recommend Entune. Ask for directions to a restaurant or nearest gas station and you’re not likely to get an answer even remotely associated with your request. Most times it was a “Im sorry I don’t understand “ but occasionally ask for the nearest gas station and it would get directions to a florist. Take Siri at its most ridiculous translations and make it 10 times worse and you’re at Entunes level of accuracy.

Oh, and an updated DVD was-maybe still is-$450 dollars to get more recent map data.
And most of the map controls are locked out if the car is in drive. And voice commands are translated into utter nonsense, which means putting the car into park to manually search for an address or restaurant/business.

Toyota makes good cars, but they don’t make good infotainment systems. I personally think car manufacturers should stay out of the map/entertainment arena and Apple should quit trying to make a car.

You mean this OS UI is going away???

I can see Craig Federighi on stage now with this top 10 features of iOS 13:
1) Dark Mode
2) Carplay updates
3) Magazine subscription
4) Mail handing attachments normally
5) ...

Remember when Steve Jobs stood up and announced that Snow Leopard wouldn't have new features? Thinking back, what was one of their best releases?

I tend to agreed about car manufacturers and their less-than-creative integration with phones, multimedia and mapping solutions. I hated the BMW solution back in 2007 with my 530xi. I used to say these moron car manufactures know nothing about software and good UIs, but with my latest BMW (a 2017 430xi), the BMW solution is fantastic compared to the CarPlay option I purchased.

I just bought a new car (replaced my 2001 with a 2019), and also noticed that issue. Was wondering if it was just me. I've only got 400 miles on the car, so not really used to all this modern stuff!

I've got a Subaru Crosstrek. In any case, glad to know others have noticed that sort of thing.
