To be fair, the public beta testers are also useless. It’s filled with users who just want to “have the latest” and not actually report anything.

I personally reported 8 bugs. And 7 of them still have the status of “open”. And only 1 of the bugs reports as have 10 similar cases.

It is not so different when you report bug in the API. One of the bugs I reported last year was finally fixed after months, I created a simple project to share with them so it was really easy to spot the bug and yet it took months to solve.

What happened to our society? Why is every little thing blown into a major conspiracy? It's a bug. One of many that will come out. Relax.
No no, my friend.... I assure you it's been this way here since at least 2014. 🤪

It also resets their position. I have Safari-Phone-Email-Evernote in my dock and after I rebooted twice (battery issues) my icons were reset to Evernote-Phone-Email-Safari and it was freaking me out.

Except that in most cases it wasn't even possible to test this feature. My main browser, Brave, has still not been approved by Apple to have the app entitlement to be a default browser. I spent the entire public beta unable to test this feature at all.

I don't think it would be fair to blame this on beta testers. It would obviously be impossible for them to find this bug.

To find this bug you would first need to install an app that supports being made the default browser/mail client. There is no way you would be able to do either of those things because apps supporting iOS14 features were not able to be uploaded to the app store until around 18 hours before release.

Ah yes a very valid point in this case.
I guess any of the features they keep till release day are going to have a bug or two.

My point is still valid though that majority of public beta testers just use it for fun and don’t report bugs. This forum is full of them. If you read through the comments.

Folks keep going on about beta testers not catching this.

At what point did it become no longer a responsibility of Apple or any software company to test their own crap?

(As I write this, Apple’s fantastic spellchecking changes “company” to “comp at.”

But also to be fair..... All companies employ internal Q&A testers to test basic software functions during releases.
They have a checklist of things to test and verify. This should have been a very easy thing to test and catch.
They don't have to rely on public beta testers. They employ 100s if not thousands of developers to catch things like this.

This does not bode well for iOS 14. A very basic bug, very easy to find, not caused by some weird, uncommon device usage. And they didn’t catch it before release?
It’s easy to criticize, but some bugs fall through the cracks. Or, it was known and they just haven’t gotten around to fixing it. It’s important to remember that release candidates, or official releases of software are rarely, if ever bug free. They are just considered to be at an acceptable level for release.

And widgets on iPad6 seems to work horribly bad. It disappeares when you put it on screen...
Because widgets can only go in the today view on iPad.

Well, I think he was being tongue in cheek. But, to answer your question.

1) Sarcastic comments like this will sometimes be taken seriously (sarcasm can be difficult to convey over the internet at times), then it gets talked about and plants the seeds of conspiracy theory inside peoples’ heads, and they talk about it, and so on and so forth... one could argue Creating and spreading conspiracy theories is almost human nature.

2) some people are whack.

“Filled with” is a likely an over estimation there buddy. I beta test any product or app I invest in for two reasons. Yes, I do like to try out new features first, but also because I will be using the official product on its release and I would like to contribute to that product being the best experience as possible for myself and others. So, when I encounter a bug, I do report it. I have not yet met someone who beta tests iOS and doesn’t report a bug when they come across it. I think your statement is more speculation than anything, but that is me speculating 😉

This forum presents a relatively small subset and is by no means a good reference to support your statement, unless your statement is the “majority of people that are beta testing and post on macrumors...” even then, I must filter that out because I don’t see that in the beta threads.

The reason this happened: Since Android included this feature, iOS developers had over a decade to think about how to do this. That's just too much time! Let's give them a break. If Apple gave their devs less than a day, like it did with app developers, I'm sure they would have figured it out.

I’ve set outlook as the default email. I deleted the std Mail app. After a reboot the default email app is still outlook. So just an issue for people that collect / use multiple email apps.

I'm sure they forgot to test this since no one needs to reboot their iOS device other than during iOS update :) It's that stable, seriously.

Bug or “feature,” who knows. No one knows what goes on in the mind of a software developer. They are a special breed. It reminds me of a joke...

Wife asked her husband, a programmer, to get groceries.

“Pick up a gallon of milk and if they have eggs, bring a dozen.”

Half an hour later he showed up with 12 gallons of milk. 😂
