“Filled with” is a likely an over estimation there buddy. I beta test any product or app I invest in for two reasons. Yes, I do like to try out new features first, but also because I will be using the official product on its release and I would like to contribute to that product being the best experience as possible for myself and others. So, when I encounter a bug, I do report it. I have not yet met someone who beta tests iOS and doesn’t report a bug when they come across it. I think your statement is more speculation than anything, but that is me speculating 😉

Haha. I’m glad you take the time to report bugs when testing out software. I try and do the same. But honestly just read the comments on the Beta 1-7 releases and it’s filled with people wanting to run it as their primary OS and bitching about stuff not working. I got a warning by the mods here for telling someone that they are not helping by “choosing to not update past iOS 14 Beta1” because it was good enough. 😂. Total time wasters.

I also addressed valid points to my initial post above.

Ironically when the icon bug hits and your icon size start going bonkers, the only way to fix is a reboot, HAH!

This does not bode well for iOS 14. A very basic bug, very easy to find, not caused by some weird, uncommon device usage. And they didn’t catch it before release?
How is that when iOS 14 has been pretty solid from the first beta on?

Just ran into a new one. Because Apple only allows widgets with 4 or 8 shortcuts, not six, and having two blank spaces which can’t be resized looks dumb, I added to two single shortcuts to my today view followed by a block of other four, which I put into a folder so I could show them. (I have other shortcuts that I don’t want to show.)

Seemed to work until today, when I slid over to use the shortcuts and the block of four was empty. I checked my Shortcuts app and Apple had decided to add a new folder with shortcuts I hadn’t asked for, and then emptied the folder I had created.

WTF?

This is not supposed to be beta now.

Early iOS releases are notoriously buggy. I am still running iOS 13.7 for a while.

I normally do this, but my mother has decided to get an Apple Watch SE, which will run watchOS 7, which requires iOS 14.

As the “tech support” for my folks, this means I must update as well.

Sigh.

Or maybe it’s just a bug? Doesn’t have to be nefarious.

When I was a beginning engineer my senior told me, "Do not blame anything on malice that can be adequately explained by stupidity." I think you are right, but I'll bet "malice" gets more clicks than "stupidity".

If you don't have the default/Apple mail application installed it doesn't change the default mail application.

That’s another problem. I can’t change the email address when I send emails.
That's your email service provider, if you have ailiases. If its separate accounts check the system preferences and see if the accounts are all set.

It’s easy to criticize, but some bugs fall through the cracks. Or, it was known and they just haven’t gotten around to fixing it. It’s important to remember that release candidates, or official releases of software are rarely, if ever bug free. They are just considered to be at an acceptable level for release.

Because widgets can only go in the today view on iPad.

That’s the thing, disappear in the today view 😕

I actually don’t get this problem when I uninstall Safari and Apple Mail. But, if either of those applications are installed and you reboot the machine, yes, it will revert back to Safari and Apple Mail being the default, until Apple issues a fix.

(Update)
Actually, the problems persist if you don’t have the apps installed. You would have to go to “Settings” and set the app to default, even though the app preferences might present to you that it is default already, you have to “set it again” to have to have the OS remap to the desired app, that is, if you DO reboot the device for any reason. So, yeah, Apple has to issue a fix.

No one reported this during the public beta?
Outlook, Edge, Firefox, and DuckDuckGo didn't gain the ability to become default clients until the app updates released on iOS public launch day (earlier this week). Chrome was the only client that could be made default. So the number of users who would have encountered this issue during beta testing was only a small subset of the total beta group, and thus an incredibly tiny number compared to users who are today using a combination of iOS and app version that support this.

When iOS 14.0.1 arrives, I will be happy to try it. I have patience. If 14.1.1 arrives instead, I'll be even happier.

2020 has been an odd year. Hopefully, operating systems will be better soon.
