You can use any Android phone exactly the same way, take it out of the box and just use it. Android's home screen can work exactly like iOS's home screen if you don't want to take advantage of the ability to change it to suit your needs. You can even ignore the existence of the app drawer as it's hidden anyway.
I don't know who spends hours customizing through countless settings menus with options, there's no need for such things on Android.
On a lot of Android phones you can install themes without rooting, in general when it comes to costumisation rooting is not really necessary.

I don't know why you keep mentioning rooting but the app is called Nova Launcher and it's just a standard 3rd party launcher. It doesn't require root and it can also be used for free, the paid version only enables a few more options.
And it doesn't have to look ugly, it can look really great if you know what you are doing or you can simply download a few Nova presents with the desired home screen look or arrangement. It's very easy.

Nova Launcher was awesome - thanks for the reminder! I usually liked to support the apps I used the most. Well, people called it ugly because I have 0 artistic ability in my entire body. I have to admit that.

Yeah, I am aware. I just feel like iOS is getting stale, and with all the big rumors of a redesign user interface, that would be a letdown after a few years of waiting.

Apple doesn’t do big, radical changes very often. It’s not easy for developers to keep up and constantly rethink how their apps are used (many apps are still to adopt dark mode). They did it with iOS7, and since then the UI paradigms have been evolving slowly - for example, in the last 2 releases, there’s been a big emphasis on modal “sheets” which pop forward and scale the background down to give the illusion of depth, like this:

I expect we’ll see further little refinements like this (interaction design), but we won’t see a radical new visual design for a while. Look at how stable the Mac’s visual design has been as an indication.

IMO, the biggest thing Apple needs to change is multitasking on the iPad. The system introduced in iOS 13 is an absolute mess; I don’t know anybody who understands it.

Hey Apple: Alphabetize the app list in Settings -> Cellular -> Cellular Data while you’re at it.

I *hate* hunting through that unorganized list to turn cellular data on or off for an app. It’s something that should have been fixed years ago.

You can already do list view. I’ve had it since day 1. How is this news?

Do you have a special unreleased version of iOS? Can you please enlighten us and tell us where in settings you enable list view? is it a hidden feature that the rest of the world is not aware of?

Here’s one thing I wish Apple would do: if you use folders, when you long press on an app (either inside or outside of a folder) it would give you an option to move to folder and then a list of folders. The current method of having to drag an app with your fingers into a folder is not a great experience. I also wish there was a place in settings where you could easily re-arrange apps in folders. Again, having to drag an app with your finger between pages within a folder is cumbersome. Half the time I end up dragging an app out of a folder because of my fat fingers. They could make this much better.

On top of this I would like to move several apps at one time into a folder instead of dragging each one in individually

Apple knew damn well what we wanted when we asked for a home screen redesign. And did they give it to us? No. Just this sad excuse for a "redesign"

Apple puts only features germane to developers in dev releases. A home screen redesign isn’t. Even if widgets are part of a new home screen, devs don’t need to see a new home screen.

Apple saves these features for new hardware events.

Apple will never give us Android like customization. This is completely and totally purposeful and relates to Apples #1 goal of instant identification. Apple wants anyone who sees your phone (either the back or the front) to instantly know you have an iPhone.

Apple purposefully disallowing true home-screen customization is my biggest complaint. We've been looking at the same homescreen for a freaking decade. I mean, at least go to 5x7 for the big screens. sheesh.

That’s sometimes true, but not always. iOS 7 developer betas absolutely featured the new UI design.
