I've never understood PIP. I mean, sure, on a dual or triple monitor desktop system I sometimes put an instruction video off to the side while I'm working on something. But that's easy to do and makes sense, just drag a window.

A phone screen is TINY. Even the biggest ones are less than 7". There's just not enough room to do that. And where I'm sitting right now in my bedroom there are seven screens within sight, it's easier and better to just play something on another screen.

I like it for podcasts that broadcast on Youtube also. You can run the video off screen while doing other things. Or run a quick search about something you’re watching. Example: baseball game and curious about a stat.

I just watched a Youtube video on Safari (Not signed in) and can confirm that PIP does work regardless if you are a premium subscriber. if you are not able to watch youtube videos in PIP mode, you do not have the setting on. Go to Settings -> General -> PIP. Turn it on.
The video might be embedded
Uf you play any video on the YouTube website it doesn’t work. If you use desktop mode on any browser Firefox, safari or DuckDuckGo it doesn’t work either.

it works if the video is embedded or if you search in the DuckDuckGo app.

I found that many YouTube videos don't seem to pay in fullscreen mode on iOS so this ends up being pretty useless anyways.
??? Weird they all play in full screen on my phone and iPad. I used a lot of browsers too but mainly safari.
If you are in the iPad go to desktop mode.
Safari is the best imo I don’t like the YouTube app at all, plus I block all the YT ads.

This really makes me sad. I only got to enjoy it one day. I sit in my car for up to an hour before work browsing the web on my phone and being able to stream music from youtube to my car via bluetooth with the video hidden in the background while continuing to browse the web really put a smile on my face. Every day I am surprised to find a new way that society has chosen to make itself slightly more sad.

I'm not sure if it's been mentioned already, but this process seems to work for airplay to an Apple TV and exiting the YouTube app or letting your phone lock (it's still flaky, but it's better than nothing):

1. Start playing the video in the YouTube app
2. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to go home (most of the time you won't get PiP, though I've seen it sometimes...)
3. Lock your phone
4. At the lock screen, you should see a standard window that shows what content is paused, with the option to airplay. Tap on that icon, and choose your device to airplay to

I should also note I'm on YouTube Premium ($12/mo). As someone pointed out to me here, that tier allows background play of music only per se, but the above approach seems to work.

Unfortunate. The decision seems like it is not based on technology but $$$.

This works ( lets see how long, hope longer than request desktop)
THANKS a lot to macrumours and the programmers!
also interesting tecnically for someone like me who sadly cant program

Yup been using it. I didn’t like the other shortcut where you had to use the YouTube app.
been using this and the bug that u tap on pip and turn the iPhone off.
I use the last one when I just want to listen to a podcast or the audio only.☺👍

Why don’t native iOS app (yt premium) doesn’t supports PIP ? Is it a future feature?
