i agree on all points — and $16/mo is ridiculous. I did find though if you search YouTube premium in the browser, you can find it for $12. Still too high in my opinion but that’s something.

why is this so confusing with so many options for premium? Is there a difference between the pricing I’m missing?
You get YouTube music/google play music for that price,

Here it’s £11.99 and you get all the YouTube features (background audio, downloadable videos, Ad free) and google play music/YouTube music. Apple Music/ Spotify alone are £9.99. So it’s £2 extra for the YouTube features in comparison to other music streaming services.

I just watched a Youtube video on Safari (Not signed in) and can confirm that PIP does work regardless if you are a premium subscriber. if you are not able to watch youtube videos in PIP mode, you do not have the setting on. Go to Settings -> General -> PIP. Turn it on.

I see — thanks! It wasn’t clear on the website.

I just cheked on safari and I’m not signed in and it doesn’t work. And I have PIP on. Did you forget to mention you have to click on request desktop website maybe?

Get a VPN and set it to India, subscribe to premium for $4. Then change it back to US. VOILA, premium for $4.

Shocked on learning how expensive youtube premium is. It should be worth it if you use it all the time though I think. BTW if you have an android device, you can install youtube vanced + microg (if you want to login your google account while using it). You now have youtube premium features for free.

PiP also worked with Hulu during the public beta releases but has since stopped. Aggravating.
Plain and simple, what YouTube needs is competition. They hold the entire segment.

Real competition is definitely needed. All this nickel and dime stuff needs to stop. This shouldn't be considered a premium for pay feature.

New major search and ad platform:
Searches are free and just as good as what Google has (lock them out on refined search that they DON'T have). I heard some small Russian company was trying to compete and could never heard of them again. Next ... mine a person's data WITH their consent - limit to which 3rd parties and clearly state whom, and finally limit how LONG that data can be mined for and for a FARE $$ Payment to the source person - the end User. Once we have THAT then the internet will be better as well as the ads will be more relevant.

Hmmm. I was browsing MacRumors this morning using ios 14 and an embedded video was able to play PIP, in Safari.

Still works yes, I wonder if it's due to Macrumors having a premium account or if their a content creator that said tubes are free of such constraint? Then again that embedded video may also soon get restricted.

I’ve discovered an issue with using picture on picture on safari. All my videos are capped at 720p on my iPhone 11 Pro Max and iPad Pro. On the YouTube app I can’t get Picture in Picture but I can watch them at 1080p.

So much for paying ;) I don't think you got your money's worth now. Worse video content uploads can always place an ad within the video then upload so you'll always see the ad. Hmm would that go against YouTube rules?

pip works if you have YT Premium subscription
It also works if you request desktop website
So basically Safari can do pip on YouTube, how could a safari bug only triggered on mobile website without premium subscription?

It's called "user agent string" and it's been around since well mobile browsers debuted (SE, Nokia J2ME based OS' and OperaMobile etc). Websites can detect a mobile browser in various ways other than user agent strings (and this can be changed within macOS or Windows with developer mode).

Doesn’t work for me. I’ve tried chrome, safari, Firefox, Aloha and tried it on all these browsers on desktop mode too.
found other work arounds like embedded videos but that’s a pain and also DuckDuckGo still works.
I found that many YouTube videos don't seem to pay in fullscreen mode on iOS so this ends up being pretty useless anyways.

Are they really charging you to let you use an apple built in feature? And people call apple greedy
