iOS 15 was released last week with a long list of new features, but there is one change that is proving to be an annoyance to users.

On the Apple TV, users who prefer not to input text using the Siri Remote can use a nearby iPhone or iPad to type. Whenever a text field appears on the Apple TV, a notification appears on the iPhone or iPad, and after tapping the notification, users can use the on-screen keyboard on the iPhone or iPad to enter text on the Apple TV.

The issue is that iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 no longer offer a way to disable the Apple TV keyboard notifications, despite Apple advertising this option in its tvOS 15 User Guide. On devices running iOS 14 and iPadOS 14, there was a toggle switch for turning off the notifications in Settings > Notifications > Apple TV Keyboard.

The inability to turn off the Apple TV keyboard notifications has prompted complaints from users. We've reached out to Apple to see if the company will consider reintroducing the toggle switch in a future software update, and we'll update this story if we hear back.

The most annoying part isn't even mentioned: It does this not just for nearby iPhones, but for any iPhone on the local network that has ever paired with that TV. So if my kids are downstairs looking for shows, it pops up repeatedly on my iPhone and my wife's iPhone and it's really annoying.

Why would ppl complain about this? How much of an annoyance could this possibly be?!
RE: above, if you have kids and multiple TVs in the house it gets annoying FAST.

Imagine trying to text someone and a box just keeps popping up over and over again throughout that one interaction multiple times. And then multiply this times every 15-20 minutes when a show is over. Even worse if they're watching shorts or something and jumping around. And I don't even let me kids watch TV much, usually just on the weekends.

Not really a first world problem, but can be annoying if you are in the room with a family member who is operating the Apple TV reaches some type of search field. Not that the notification takes over my phone, but the notification is a bit frustrating.

Ah! I thought it only triggered if you were near the TV. That does sound annoying

That keyboard notification has been so annoying to me I’ve emailed Apple feedback about it a couple of times, and I’ve called Apple support about it, Apple support told them they didn’t think it could be turned off. Apple feedback didn’t respond like they always do.

Wish I had know 2 years ago there at least used to be a way to turn it off.

What’s so annoying about it is I usually watch TV in the dark and I’m tired and I‘m relaxing. And a lot of times my iPhone will end up on the table or on the sofa next to me, When that notification comes up, it lights up the room and I have reach over and grab my iPhone to see what's going on. I’ve never gotten used to that stupid keyboard notification even after being annoyed by it for 2 years now,

It might have been before iOS 14 that I looked for a way to turn it off, and there wasn’t a way in iOS 13? And that’s why I never figured it out?

Two other new AppleTV annoyances that came along with tvOS 15:
  1. You can no longer use the remote to ffwd/rew/pause video that's being shown on the AppleTV via Airplay
  2. AppleTV+ shows no longer use the standard player interface, meaning controls like captions aren't as easily accessible (no more quick swipe down to turn them on/off)

I think that IS the new standard player interface you are seeing. The controls were moved to be more discoverable. It’s definitely an adjustment after years of swiping down though.

Yep, I experience this, it’s very annoying. Thankfully I have yet to upgrade my iPad to iPadOS 15 and probably won’t for a while due to this and other issues with iPadOS 15.

On a slightly related note, is anyone else experiencing an issue on iOS 15 that you can‘t take actions on notifications anymore? I used to be able to from the lock screen swipe to the right on a notification and reply to messages, etc., I don’t have that option anymore on my XS on iOS 15.

I do wish that Apple would pick a location for UI and stick with it. Changing it almost every release is really becoming frustrating. Does no one at Apple understand the concept of muscle memory??
