Another day another Craig Federighi-related software screw up.....

Strange that this was never an issue when Scott Forstall was incharge of iOS....

I'm getting notifications for my parents' Apple TV at their house, so quite annoying.
Ah, guess I should've read the replies. 😀

Seems like that the default "broadcast" for this in iOS 15 is too wide. Probably should be "on same network" + "device belongs to iCloud family member" by default.

First, I want to thank MacRumors again for bringing light to this issue. Rest-assured, this is indeed an issue and not just a minor annoyance.

My setup: I work from home and do quite a bit of development and testing on my devices (iPhone, iPod touch and a couple of iPads). Mixure of iOS/iPadOS 14 and 15. Some of these devices are also my main devices (e.g. phone) not just used for work.

Home has two Apple TVs. On my devices as well as these Apple TVs, I'm signed in to my iCloud account. I've been the main purchaser of content over the years, so this makes sense (access to such content from my Mac, Apple TVs, etc.).

On iOS/iPadOS 14, Apple had the separate Apple Remote app plus there was a dedicated entry under Settings | Notifications of "Apple TV Keyboard". I had mine turned off. Thus, I never got notifications, but when I needed to (e.g. doing app updates on Apple TV and having to enter my password), it was indeed handy to use my iPhone. But anyone searching say YouTube, never sent a notification to my devices.

Enter iOS/iPadOS 15. As mentioned, that Notifications entry is now gone. Apple also shut off the functionality of Apple Remote since its now part of Control Center. But even when removing Apple Remote from Control Center, notifications will now come to all my devices anytime someone interacts with a text field (or pin-entry field) on Apple TV.

What I find even worse though is even if setting up Apple's new Focus feature, that doesn't help. And these notifications still happen even when my devices are set to Do Not Disturb.

I find it ironic that crucial things such as Amber alerts can be shut off, but these keyboard notifications cannot.

I have since thought of a potential workaround in case Apple refuses to fix this. Basically create another Apple ID (a fake member of the famiy essentially). And as long as that account is part of our Family Sharing, sign in to that account on the Apple TVs. If I try this, I'll report back how that went.

Sadly, it's the new normal. Be aggrieved at the littlest thing imaginable and then lash out with a boatload of outrage cranked up to 11.
I'm genuinely curious as to why you think Apple can do no wrong. These issues pop up all the time and have been ever since Craig took control of iOS/MacOS. A new release of software happens and boom - there's a lengthy list of bugs and problems that pop up

I've never said this about an update: iSO 15 is their most trash update ever. SO many things like this are half baked and don't actually work.

- Youtube videos now autoplay in Safari on scroll touch events, fked up
- Can't disable these notifications, fked up
- It overwrote a ton of system settings so I've had to re configure a lot of my apps, notifications, etc.
- There are really long pop ups that come up back to back and so you miss them hitting continue
- Still doesn't solve the calendar spam issue
- Taps don't work half the ***** time

I just hate it, I'm so upset with Apple. They really cracked this year and it shows that their culture is breaking. As an engineer who knows a lot of other Apple engineers, they all hate their lives right now and I don't blame them!

A bit off topic but similar. Does anyone else get a keyboard prompt on their watch when in message scroll pad. If I go to reply to a message on watch via the scroll pad I get a prompt on iphone and ipad to use keyboard to type response. Not sure I get the use case for this because if I open the keyboard on my phone to reply I may as well just reply from imessage on the phone??

I can see them getting rid of the Apple TV remote in a few years or having it as an optional add-on purchase. This change could be the start of getting people used to using their phone

Apple is rotten to their core now. Although this isn’t a huge issue, it is just one more in your face from Apple that you should do everything their way or no way. And your holding it wrong when it is truly broken. That 💩 might satisfy the fan club members, but the rest of us are getting tired of excuses for crappy programming and really bad decisions on Apple’s part.

I think your Scott v. Craig analysis is off primarily because Scott led software in a simpler time when Apple had very few services and a smaller product line.

Apple's problems in software reliability are due to increased complexity making it harder to achieve "it just works" status. Easier to "just work" when the box is a mostly closed system with few dependencies on other services internal or external.

I struggle to believe one man in the C-level is going to fix that problem but I'm not an ardent believer in great man theory.

The solution is simple. For you, vote with your wallet, purchase a competing phone, and find happiness. Will you do it?

As for your many Apple engineer friends who hate their lives, well, recommend they seek therapy and a different employer.

Easy.

Let's also have the option to disable the "low battery" and "enable wifi for location accuracy" notifications.

I don’t have an Apple TV, but there is a trick to disable notifications for Shortcuts which also does not allow disabling of notifications. You go into the notifications section of Screentime, choose Shortcuts, and disable from there. Can someone report if this hidden option is available to solve this problem?

And one other really annoying issue that can't be turned off in 15, stop showing whats playing on my homepods on my iPhone and watch lock screen, it's bloody annoying Apple!

During the Scott Forstall era, iOS effed up handling daylight savings. Every damn year. There was also a lock-code bypass exploit pretty much every other release.

It just feels like Apple can't keep up with their own set pace on software.
So much is not polished and just constantly getting basic things broken by updates.

It's a treadmill of mediocre software, all due to their self imposed annual "new version" cadence.

They need to get off that treadmill - slow down the software releases and actually make them better and more polished over a longer period of time.

AppleTV+ shows no longer use the standard player interface, meaning controls like captions aren't as easily accessible (no more quick swipe down to turn them on/off)
Apple seems to be doing really good with its accessibility lately! /s

But seriously, wasn't there drama around other TV apps using custom UIs? I really hope Apple reverses this decision.
