Lower sales, downgrades of subscriptions, switching to Android, not upgrading to iOS 15. Once Apple ends up losing their "trillion dollar company" spot and falls down the charts they'll wake up and see that they sold everyone on a lie.

While I don’t think my privacy would be better protected by Google/Android, today’s news probably will make me more inclined to check out or stick with Android and Google services. Because Google creates some good stuff that I think is better than the Apple equivalent (Drive, Photos, Gmail etc). And if, in the future, the government can ask Apple have my phone scan for the hashes of whatever it deems to be objectionable content…..the privacy advantage that for me has always made up for the sometimes inferior functionality of Apple products and services will be gone.

Certain privacy stuff, such as what the OS exposes to apps, will still be better on iOS. For example, I’m going to keep my banking apps on iOS

However, recent news has devalued Apple devices in my book. Apple products have always had ridiculous markups in my country. Back then, one can argue about the privacy advantage. But now, that argument brings less value, meaning it’s harder to justify Apple’s pricing.

I think a good way to mass protest would be refusing to upgrade to iOS 15. Apple tracks those numbers and loves to boast every year about how many users upgraded.
On the bright side, Apple did announce that they will continue supporting iOS14 alongside iOS15. It's as if there's a glimmering hope inside Apple that is still trying.

Or simply put… “you’re taking your pictures wrong”.
Or next, "you're thinking it wrong."

Meanwhile, Netflix and their Cuties are still in the app store. Facebook and their literal belligerent refusal to control hoaxes and fake news are still in the app store.

I'm guessing Tim got something during the elite summer camp at the Sun Valley Conference.

I love it when people say they’re going to switch platforms because of this CSAM stuff. Only to ignore other companies had these systems in place for years.

Google, Facebook and Microsoft put similar systems in place: Google implemented a "PhotoDNA" system in 2008 with Microsoft following suit in 2009. Facebook and Twitter have had similar systems in place since 2011 and 2013 respectively.

Apple is late to the party.

Indeed. I was just pointing out that what’s added value to the Apple brand for me up to now (privacy) is no longer a billboard-worthy product feature that distinguishes it from the rest of the pack. Might as well give less expensive and sometimes superior Google, Facebook and Microsoft products a shot.

Except all of the CSAM stuff has NOTHING to do with iCloud as Apple is scanning your photos ON YOUR DEVICE.
You are gravely mistaken. Apple have stated quite clearly that if you have iCloud photos enabled your phone will then scan and evaluate each picture you have.

This CSAM stuff doesn’t change the fact that with Google and Facebook, you’re the product. I don’t think Apple’s stance on privacy changed after this. At the same time, they don’t want to become a haven for criminals either so it good very well be the pressure was on to implement this feature as the last big tech company that was still holding out.

Burner email is not new. Outlook has been offering alias for ages, and I’ve been using it for a while. Gmail has something similar as well, although it’s much more limited (many sites cannot accept email address with a + sign).

Folks, do remember that Apple did say that iOS 14 will still be supported alongside iOS 15. So there’s no real issue if you don’t want to upgrade to iOS 15. Maybe the more people sticking on iOS 14 might send a message to Apple.
But there’s a real chance apple installs the same spying software on iOS 14 as well, just without those interfaces and “features”.

We obviously are screeching voices to Apple now.
As I said multiple times to different topics: “You worth nothing to Apple, you’re just a breathing Wallet”, and they are just a greedy company. The Apple we knew is gone.

The sad thing is, Tim & Co. won already, look at their yearly income, that’s a multiple checkmate. Sure you can still choose your path, boycott, swap platforms, etc. but personally he does not care for this/you. He is just playing the game to fill the pot as much as he can, and then step back.

At least more and more people are slowly realizing this. You can like or dislike Apple products, but you should NEVER trust any company.

Words that would never have been written down by Steve Jobs.

Actually Apple has scanned iCloud for years already. However, there is one massive difference here. First of all Apple intends to do the heavy lifting client side in the future. Easily searchable database within a device makes mass surveillance effective. Also companies such as NSO Group will most likely find good use for such database. It’s worth mentioning that on hands of companies such as NSO Group iOS has more holes than Swiss cheese. Tens of thousands of people have had their security compromised by NSO products (that’s only one company). Making device security even worse is definitely not the way to go. Apple should do the scanning on server side like they have done before (and like others are doing) and make the devices safer and more secure. Building backdoors into devices is definitely not the right way to go.

For the first time ever I’m genuinely thinking of switching away from Apple. I’ve never been all that happy with the iOS walled garden, but I could live with it. However, scanning data on my own devices is just not something anyone should have the right to do. Yes abusing children is horrific but this is real surveillance state stuff, a truly draconian feature.

Some were wondering why Apple is deciding, for the first time, to continue supporting the old iOS version alongside the new one despite the fact that all iOS 14 devices are eligible for 15, and that there must be something negative about iOS 15 for them to do so.

The thing is, if you don't upgrade, your device will soon become less usable.
That's also why they have iOS install image online signing, they grabbed you by your nuts already.

Just noting that that note was from Marita Rodrigues from the NCEMC, not Tim Cook. Not trying to defend Apple, but it’s important to know who’s saying what.

Yeah, but he distributed it internally, so he fully agrees to the content of this note.
Ive probably couldn't stand these scumbags anymore, that's why he left, well done Ive.

Oh and fun fact: iOS device can’t be used completely offline (literally no connection for months). Apple is tracking everybody all along, probably from the debut of the first iPhone.

Are you sure? I have an iPod Touch previous gen here on iOS 11 (the OS it shipped with). It has been in Airplane mode with BT and WLAN turned off for at least two years. I'm not aware of any net connection it could have established (strictly used as a music player for the locally stored files using VOX).

Out of curiosity: what alternative are you considering? Google and Microsoft have been doing these scans for years.
