I love Apple but this news feels like a joke given the recent headlines
I agree.

There are internal memos circulating within Apple praising the photo snooping.

However the public backlash in relation to this has already started.
A quote from the AppleInsider article:
"The document, which reads more like an indictment than an open letter, offers a rundown of Apple's Thursday announcement that details upcoming features designed to detect CSAM."

You all can read the open letter here:

This post as you can clearly see is clearly on topic and not about any political or social issue.

I’m willing to bet that most people involved in creating and exploiting heinous CSAM won’t be using cloud based services.
This tells me this is being done for other nefarious reasons i.e. back doors for government snooping.

How long until it’s detected anti-government images, or ‘wrongthink’? I’ve witnessed the Western world hurtling towards 1984 faster than I thought possible in the last few years. Sitting presidents digitally death sentenced, social media giants shut down any wrong think related to politics, covid or whatever.

I don’t believe this is being done for honest reasons, I guess I’m ditching iCloud now. All the good will Apple built regarding privacy has just been wiped in this single, short sighted move.

This comes from a father of a one year old and the husband of a wife who suffered child sexual abuse. My wife already told me to cancel our iCloud plan.

OK. Playing “devil’s advocate” here. Look up Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act (47 U.S.C. § 230).

Apple is responsible for the content held on its servers.

Craigslist shut down their personals ads due to the same law if memory serves.
I understand that Apple is responsible for what is stored on their servers. My problem is with the on device scanning.

Macrumors - real question.. is the timing of this intended to distract from the recently leaked/announced privacy exceptions - or is this just terrible timing?

I really hope it’s not a coordinated effort to redirect our attention to all of the pro-privacy steps Apple is taking in the hopes that we’ll ignore the recent news.

Honestly, I was excited to use features like Hide My Email and Private Relay… but now I no longer trust Apple with these services.

I’m thinking of unsubscribing from Apple One to be honest. More and more, Apple has been really losing the plot.

I am referencing CSAM, of course and I’m in Canada but hey, it’s a matter of time. I’m not going to say “of course sexual abuse is bad”, why does every single person here need to state it. I’ve BEEN sexually abused as a child. Everyone with even a limited moral compass knows it’s awful. But this action by Apple is disgusting. Certain agencies that wrote Apple describing those with expressed concerns as the “screeching minority”, and Apple forwards them to their employees as “motivation”. What the hell am I reading? This is splashed on the front page of many news websites. Do you think the pedophiles will continue, if they even ever did, store CSAM on iCloud Photos now?

The MINORITY of you on here who are defending this are the delusional folks. “Shut off iCloud photos”, yeah, that’s great when they’ve been pushing us over the years with this connected ecosystem, privacy, etc.

I’ve never been so mortified to read this from a company I used to respect. I know, it’s a business but damn, they sure as hell fooled and lulled me into a state of privacy.

The future implications of this will have repercussions for Apple. This is not a casual “feature”, this is the potential death of what I thought the last bastion of privacy was.
Well said. I have been a a very loyal customer. But of this goes through. This is my last iphone. Dont care who i goto, even if it is the same. Apple should be punished with my wallet for the betrayal

Irrelevant, it's a duopoly to start with. That should have been fixed time ago. This is what happens when companies have cheerleaders and regulators don't work.

Nice obfuscation. Don't like Apple's policy in how they deal with CP on THEIR SERVERS, simply take personal responsibility and purchase a different device that doesn't address that issue.

What is it that you don't understand? You can't tell people to choose another device to fix the problem when there are no alternatives because it's a flawed market, a duopoly. That's very precisely why antitrust laws exist to start with.

Bravo! Someone who commits to taking personal responsibility.

More obfuscation. There are dozens of phones out their. Simply take responsibility and choose one that meets your requirements.

You either are blind or pretend to be blind. It's about the OS and related services. How many mobile OS are there then? I'm okay if Apple starts selling iPhones that can run another OS. Is that right?

The issue is that although Android is a worse solution when it comes to privacy, at least they didn't put on a whole pretend act like Apple did. That's why Android looks better in this situation. They're a wolf in wolf clothing while Apple was a wolf in sheep clothing.

Choose one using the other OS with related services the particular manufacturer includes that meets your requirements. And stop with the personal insults.

Exactly. The other features mentioned in this article were announced months ago. Which is why it seems like poor timing, at best, to publish a lengthy article about all of iOS 15’s progress in the fight for privacy. If not poor timing, I’m raising the serious question of whether this was purposefully published now in order to distract from the negative privacy news.

If I had been preparing an in depth article on the privacy improvements of iOS 15, I would have held off on publishing this piece for at least a few days following the recent news. Instead, this is like a Tesla news site publishing a write up on the cool new “self driving” features the day after a deadly Tesla crash.

I didn't insult you mate. There is only one other OS, that's why it's a duopoly. Wow, that's hard to understand eh?

There are dozens of phone manufacturers. Each can provide a level of customization was the point.

There are dozens of phone manufacturers. Only two OS.

Are there three OS?

Are there four OS?

Are there more than four OS?

That's what I thought.
