We just have to drill it into our noggins that we get 1000 good days with your rental, errr.... purchase of your device. Anything after that is just pan drippings.
1000 days is less than 3 years. The SE and 6s will see 5 years of updates and the 7 will see (at least) the same. Plus if course the device keeps working after its last OS update, as others have said.

Strange if true - it seems like the 6S/6S Plus are being dropped for no particular reason. The 6S has 2 GB ram (just like the 7 and 8) and CPU isn't particularly slower than the A10 that's in the 7 (although the 7 is multi core, the dual performance cores cannot opperate alongside the other cores unlike the later chips). The SE I can see being dropped as it must be a pain for developers to have to support the smaller screen / lower resolution for a single model.

Security updates will still continue for at least a year afterward, probably more, based on Apple’s history.
Hopefully that is the case, although the history of that has been fairly short so far.

again another person believing SE should be dropped because of its tiny screen and resolution while believing 6S should get iOS 15

FFS, OG SE performs better than 6S/6S+/5th Gen iPad because of the screen size, less pixels for the A9 to handle, smaller resolution etc etc

you seem to forget the first two bits of OS Comaptiability. The CPU and RAM.

don’t forget 5s and 6/6+ didn’t get iOS 13 and they had a 4/4.7/5.5 inch screen so ZERO to do with the screen size

Apple devices get seven years support. That means until 2022 for the ones released on 2015.

It's not a time thing. All of those devices use A9 or older.
This. the 5C is a prime example. Released in 2013 with the 5s/A7 but axed at the same time as the 5. Same with A5X. Dead alongside the A5 even though they're a year apart.

The A8 (non x) was dead fast because it's essentially an A7 speedwise and ram-wise. That thing ran just as slow as the A7 on newer iOS versions

No surprise that Apple would leave behind the 6s and SE Gen 1 as they will be coming up on 6 years by the time iOS 15 is released. The iPad 5 isn't quite as old but has the same A9 chip and 2 GB of RAM so it would be surprising if they drop the 6s/SE but not the iPad 5.

I do wonder if they'll continue to provide basic security updates to devices left on iOS 14 for a year or two since this is currently happening for devices left on iOS 12 (iPhone 5s, 6, 6+, iPad Air, Mini and iPod Touch 6 just received another iOS 12 update within the last couple weeks).

Looks like I might just be on iOS 14 for quite a while with my OGSE

All good

Honestly my current generation iPad mini 5 is still on iOS 13 (for jailbreak) and I don’t notice or miss anything really.

Does anybody else wish they would just take a year off from a new iOS version and keep working on the existing one?

It seems like by the time they get one to be nice and polished and bug fixed they start it all over again for you particularly beneficial reason

I’m curious to know if they plan to keep offering software updates for Apple TV HD and HomePod. Both of those devices have an A8 SoC. Of course tvOS is a modified slimmed down version of iOS and we found out last year that HomePod’s OS was changed from regular iOS to being based off of tvOS.

I would think so because they are still selling those products but they also discontinued the 6th gen iPod touch in May 2019 right before announcing iOS 13 a month later which dropped support.
While tvOS is based on iOS code it was intentionally branched off so they can write a slimmer version that only supports A8 and A10x. With Apple still selling Apple TVs and Homepods with the A8 I don't see these being dropped from software updates anytime soon.

I can set my 6s next to my 2020SE and they are very very nearly exactly same speed at every task I compare at same time.
A busy Safari page takes like 1/2 second longer to fully load

A9 was beginning of really robust processors

What phone should I buy--the 2020 SE (which I don't like because of the slippery soap bar design) or the iPhone 12 mini (which I really like the design of, but with PWM and Face ID)?

but 5/5c was axed from iOS 13for a unique reason

that it isn’t a 64bit phone. Largely you’d think speed or even stability and similar things like that though

compared to the A5X for more than three reasons

The 6S is starting to get long in the tooth. The 7 meanwhile, has a lot more headroom, so makes sense it will get another update.

Correct, but I mentioned that they discontinued the 6th gen iPod touch only to drop support for it 30 days later.

I have an se1 and I’m satisfied with how long it has been supported, but I’m upset that iOS 14 absolutely destroyed my battery life to the point I can’t use certain apps like safari without seeing the battery percentage tick down every couple seconds. Otherwise I’d be happy staying on 14. And obviously I can’t roll back. Also I got a battery replacement from Apple not that long ago.

Although the iPad mini 4 (with an A8) is still supported on iPad OS14.

Amazes me how people think Apple should provide updates for eternity. I don't know of any competitor that provides support and updates for half as long as Apple, let alone on a budget device like the SE.

Besides, the device still works perfectly fine, you just won't get new features or upgrades. This whole planned obsolescence thing is BS from people that don't understand progress and technology.
Not a single person to the point of your post has suggested Apple should provide updates for eternity.

But good for you not to waste the chance to preach a little sermon lol!

Yes. To everyone that has actually paid attention to processor performance and past support of older devices.....
