Personally, I think if you're running anything older than the iPhone 8 or X from 2017, it's time to upgrade anyway. The iPhone (SE) 2020 and the iPhone 12 mini are excellent phones if you still insist on a smaller form factor.

I think people that tell others what to do are bizarre. If you use a device without issues and can do your own repairs, why wouldn’t you? Do people think upgrading every year or 2 is good for the environment? Our iphone ses are from 2017. Same as the 8, and it probably needs a new battery, too.

People tell people what to do all the time. As far as saving the environment, that ship sailed a while ago. Government and corporations(who are in bed with each other) value profit over pretty much anything.

Doesn't mean you have to willingly be part of that game. Ifixit allows you to keep stuff going for at least a year or 2 extra. If you don't have the ability to do it yourself or have the money to put in a new battery, that is a different issue.

Yeah I’m not gonna pry open a 1200$ phone and hope for the best. my Finances are good. Selling my year old phone to get the newest phone is nothing to me. Plus I dont have a wife or kids. That kinda helps too

I'm actually gonna go out on a limb here and say I think nothing will get dropped.

The 2017 iPad had an A9 and that would only be 4 years which isn't much. I think the reason apple is putting older chips in the budget iPads is because they know they will be keeping support of these older chips for longer.

The pre A9 chips were slow and I can see why they were dropped but the A9 is when it hit a pretty impressive level so I think there will be a couple more years yet.
A9 devices 2GB RAM
A10 and up - > 3GB RAM

That's probably the reason for being dropped. The A9 is more than capable.

I have a 6S. I think I think I'm going to upgrade, but I am waiting until the release of the new iPhones.

I was going to get a new phone but after reading Sam in SoCal I'm convinced hanging onto my 6S is the right thing to do. Thanks Sam! (I don't think you have to worry about getting a wife or kids anytime soon either, chicks don't dig depressing guys who flush money away for no reason! 😂)

Cost isn't an issue for me, I just literally haven't had an issue with my phone other than replacing the battery every couple years. I thought going from a 6 to a 12 would be a nice mathematically round way to go, but now I think I'll wait until the iPhone 18's are out.

I find it interesting how people can comment on other people's needs and wants. His comment also cemented my keeping my 2017 SE. And 2015 ipad pro 12.9 - which reminds me, I need to order a battery for.

Let me get this right, this person is aware that when iOS 15 does come out, people who have a 6s amongst other models, is still urging people to keep their phone which is goin to loose support if it happens to run into problems? 🤔

It still will get security updates

If you repair your own phone or can easily upgrade later down the road, what does it matter if you hang on to your phone a long time? Why do people care what others do, almost like we offend you. It is just weird. Just ordered batteries for my 2015 ipad pros. If we break them, who cares? We'll just order new ones. If we don't break them, then that's at least another year or 2 of life, plus we can give them away to someone that will use them for another few years.

Which is why if Apple drops 6 iPhones/iPads from the line (A8/A8X/A9) it would be more easier to give them those odd sporadic security updates like the 7 devices stuck on iOS 12 because of the millions of older devices still in use

Well, my SE (2017 with 128GB) still runs fine for all the tasks I want it to do. The battery isn't worn out that much, simply because I use it for just one or two hours a day. If an upgrade was necessary the iPhone 12 mini would indeed be my first choice because of its size, but the doubled price tag is a big reason not to buy it. Also with only Face ID its not practical in these times with mandatory face masks. All other models are just too big for my pocket.
I'll wait for iPhone 14 mini with Touch ID. Until then, I'll just get a fresh battery for my SE.

What if you aren't technically savvy enough to do it yourself and you make your problem worse?

Then you buy a new device or pay an authorized repair place.

We just replaced 4 batteries, 2 ipads, 2 iphones. New lives for all devices.

I was being totally sarcastic. I do plan on updating my iPhone because I have to. I have no other choice and I refuse to use a device that won't accept anymore OS updates especially if they are security updates. I can handle time until April with my 6s. Yeah its slow at times, but I think about what's coming and it'll be worth the wait. :)

I believe that Apple will make an 2021 iPhone mini with the new on-screen Touch ID sensor. That's the phone you may want to update to late this fall.
