I would rather just have the digits displayed instead of a yellow battery. I never understood why they didn't give that as an option on face id phones.

Well, yes, but that's not much of a problem for me, as my thumb's always right there to hit the physical volume buttons.
True ...

but what if you're same thumb is being used to scroll up notifications just to see what's updated? 1 raise/lower volume then scroll.

I guess apple figured we'd all upgrade to AirPods Pro 2 with volume on stem.

You know, I am not sure which is worse: A battery indicator that looks "full" yet the number in it could be "20" and you can't see it because it's small, or a silly icon that kinda sorta shows how full the battery is.

Apple in iOS 16 updated the battery icon on iPhones with Face ID to display the specific battery percentage rather than just a visual representation of battery level. At launch, this feature did not include the iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone XR, or iPhone 11, but according to multiple reports from the MacRumors forums and Twitter, all of these iPhones now support the feature.

Battery percent was not present on iPhones that have ‌Face ID‌ in iOS 15 because of the lack of space on either side of the notch that houses the TrueDepth camera hardware, but Apple's updated iOS 16 design adds the specific battery level to the battery icon, providing a better idea of battery status at a glance.

With this update, iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone XR, and iPhone 11 users can see their battery percentage in the status bar, and battery percentage is officially available on the iPhone XR and later. Devices without a Face ID notch always display the battery percentage as well.

Unfortunately my new
(purchased 09/19) 13 mini didn’t get iOS 16.1 It jumped over 16.1 and instead jumped strait to 16.2 from iOS 16 so I’m not getting battery percentage on my mini.
I’m returning my mini 13 Apple support says sorry tough luck can’t do anything about it.

This is a good choice that they decided to release it for 13 mini etc.
Not everyone gets iOS 16.1 I just purchased a 13 mini at Apple on 19/22 and my update jumped to from iOS 16 straight to 16.2 and missed 16.1 for some reason so I won’t get the battery percentage. So sorry says Apple support “we can’t do anything about it” With their “too bad “ attitude I’m taking it back. Good riddance Apple you’ve become to big to give a $h*t

The latest public iOS version is 16.0.2, which doesn't have the battery-icon for the minis yet.
iOS 16.1 (read: 16.1.0) is still in beta and not rolled out to everybody.
16.0.2 and 16.2 are not the same thing.
