This whole thing is so bizarre. There is no reasonable explanation for why Apple limited this to certain models.
Kind of like profiles on the photo app, or a more sensible approach to an AOD on older devices. It's mostly about the AMOLED more than it is the refresh rate.

Agreed. I was super pissed seeing this news.

BUT .. there is no reasonable explanation for this either on the minis:

wow. Much wow indeed. No reason why my 13 mini can’t display battery like every other phone. It even has a higher PPI density than the new 14. I thought this was almost as stupid as STILL not letting us arrange our icons the way we want. I’m still astounded that it’s not possible without some kind of janky hack today.
So
I’ve had a similar problem with the playback “widget” on the Lock Screen, where after I stop playing music, a blank box remains. I believe that was beta 4.
Hmm. interesting, glad I was not the only one. Speaking of playing music app via lock screen widget iOS 16 removes the volume control Arrgh 'Whyyyyyyyyyy?!'

I find the UX terrible, it looks like a full battery at a glance, so I turned it off. Shame as this can be useful, I've never had such a bad implementation on any phone before, can't they just copy some Android?

On the bright side the larger lock screen battery widget is very good and usable to quickly check the situation. It shows a clear percentage and a well designed fill bar.
