Just wanted to make sure I'm not the only one with this issue or check that something didn't change.. While in a normal phone call with iOS 16.1, the volume buttons on the phone do not work to adjust the volume on the call unless you pull the phone away from your head and cause the screen to come back on. I had this issue all through the beta and reported it as a bug -- and the Feedback app shows that there were more than reports from others that reported it. Can anyone else confirm? This is with a 14 Pro.

Have the same problem, this is what I found as a solution, but for me, that is not a solution

Workaround For iOS 16 Volume Buttons Issue

  • While on a call, distance the iPhone from your face and bring it into normal holding position.
  • Click Volume Up or Volume Down. Is the earpiece audio level being altered? It should work!
  • However, as soon as you bring your iPhone back to your ear they will become unresponsive again.

This is no solution, in my opinion.

No, its not -- I literally wrote "buttons on the phone do not work to adjust the volume on the call unless you pull the phone away from your head"

I just wanted to verify that this issue happened to everyone -- or only to some people that had some combination of settings that was causing it. Someone on Reddit during the beta tried to make the argument that it could be intentional behavior due to the new accessibility setting that turns off hanging up a call with the power button, but that made no sense.

I tried that accessibility setting you speak about, and didn't help, tried other things like change volume with side buttons off/on, also didn't help

I just can't remember if this was an issue before 16.1, anyone knows?

It's a software problem. Probably have to wait for Apple to fix it.
Aware of that -- it started with the first beta of 16.1, filed bug reports for it throughout the beta -- the bug reports all showed "Number of similar reports: > 10" -- but apparently it wasn't important enough to fix before release. Just seems an unusual move by Apple -- it is core phone functionality.

Can't believe they ignored bug reports, now I look like an idiot when talking to someone, I need to tell them ''please wait a sec, need to turn up/down volume'' and that takes few seconds to move phone from my face for screen to show

hope for a fix soon

Strange.. On my iPhone 14 Pro, it was the first thing I checked after updating today.. At first I thought it wasn't fixed because I pressed volume down and got no response -- but apparently I was already at the lowest volume and once I hit volume up a few times while the phone was pressed to my face and display was off, it worked.

It seems they fixed it only for 14 series. People with 12,13 or recently heard xr are still experiencing the issue
