Can the IPSW for the RC be installed through iTunes or will we have to wait for a release day update like with 16.0 and it’s betas?

You can update via the .ipsw file thru iTunes (Windows) or Finder (Mac), yes. No need to wait until an official release. I updated via the .ipsw file as well.
Beautiful, thank you. I’m going to try to update to the RC tomorrow after a Dr’s appt, I should have some time to take care of that.

So first we need to install beta profile to install IPSW?
I don't believe you do. My understanding, the beta profile is for feedback app and to receive beta OTA updates. Since the feedback app should not be in the RC by default, I believe you can just update with the IPSW.

Just note that if Apple were to release an RC2, you will need to either update with another IPSW file, or install the beta profile to get the RC2 OTA update.

Anyone else have issues w/ the RC messing w/ People in Photos?

It seems to have merged my User into someone else.....

so is there outline or not?
It’s not, but it was always there. The behavior, as far as I can tell (I don’t use AOD so that may have changed) is exactly the same as before, just the outline is slightly brighter and actually matches the rest of the status bar a bit better as far as that goes.

I have no idea what people are talking about with this being a new thing. It has had an outline. Apple just made it more noticeable. I don’t personally prefer it, but it’s hardly something to be outraged over. The screenshots I added show both versions. I think people are switching to dark wallpapers just to test out this outline change, and then acting like it’s a new thing. I’ve had a dark wallpaper since the day I got my 14p and it has always had the outline.

If you look at my screenshots, literally all Apple has done is make the outline more consistent in appearance with the control center indicator. Now instead of it being barely visible, it matches and looks consistent. That is literally it. As soon as you unlock the phone, the outline disappears. When you use the DI for say, spotify or a phone call, the outline pops out. As soon as you end your phone call or the music app is stopped, the outline is gone.

The only thing I noticed about it is that when AOD is enabled, the outline is slightly miss-sized and is partially cut off by the actual island on the right side. Assuming apple will fix that.

I did not test AOD before updating, as I don’t use it so I simply forgot, so I’m not sure what it would look like then. I don’t want to restore and downgrade just for that as I find the paste permissions options in settings to be reason enough to upgrade from 16.0.3.

If anyone on 16.0.3 could take a photo of their lockscreen with AOD on and using a black background while the phone is locked, that would give us a good idea of what that looks like before. I can take a 16.1 photo to compare.

I only see the outline if I am unlocking the phone, then it goes away once the animation within Dynamic Island is complete. I don't see the outline at all with AOD on but the screen dim. This is on 16.0.3

So it sounds like the only difference in its behavior now is that the outline shows in AOD. I definitely think that’s a dumb and unnecessary design choice, but doesn’t seem to be the end of the world. Here’s AOD on 16.1:

My guess, either it is a marketing solution to show off the new model in public when a darker wallpaper is enabled, or to remind the user where the dynamic island is, lol. Maybe as a reminder that your photo won't be visible in that zone, hard to say for sure though.

Yeah I’m not quite sure what Apple’s idea here is. The lock icon already shows on AOD I believe, so there’s already an indication that the phone is locked. Outline not needed. Of all the things I want lighting up my AOD, the outline is definitely not one I want or need. All the while, widgets don’t show. It’s a very strange hill for Apple to die on. Overall I just find their AOD implementation terrible. It’s like they’re trying to make it different, just to be different. There’s no benefits to how Apple’s AOD works over say a random Android phone where you get a black screen with just a clock, notifications icons, and maybe battery percentage. Nothing else is needed, and having the wallpaper just results in a crappy looking wallpaper IMO. I hope someday Apple adds some sort of “dark mode” for AOD where it only shows the time. Until then, I’ll keep it turned off.

Well said. With the battery suffering more than was led on it seems like it would benefit everyone to have fewer useless pixels illuminated.
