That update isn't related to background refresh; it's because people upgrading from iOS 13 to 14 complained that newly-installed apps didn't have any widgets, or that upgraded apps didn't have upgraded widgets.

After loads of people had to post "you need to run the app at least once so that the widget can be extracted and any displayed-data downloaded", Apple decided to automate it with a toggle option.

Can someone please clarify how to verify installed version. I can see I’m on 16.5 but where to check if I’m on beta 3?

Got to settings, about, iOS version, tap on that to get a build number.

Then check that against this forums details at the top of page ones build number 👍🏼

If it doesn’t match, go to beta 2 forum.

Yeah... noticed that in beta 2 and cut it off... I'm not so impatient that I can wait a second or 2 for the app to pull data. I have background app refresh turned OFF for almost everything.

I’m exactly the same. To me it’s just energy being used for no real reason.

I’ve not noticed any performance issues having both switched off.

Yeah, background app refresh in particular doesn't even seem to do anything. All my widgets update just fine with it turned off. I haven't noticed different behavior in any apps. So I leave it off, because I might as well have less stuff going on in the background wasting battery, especially if I don't even notice a difference.

Not sure why, iPad Pro, I have gotten a couple different error messages when launching an app where I have a saved login.
I did capture this one (see attached). This particular one is from a delivery service - DoorDash

Click on app, it launches, applies saved id and errors out. A relaunch or retry (option) of the app works just fine.

Any ideas from anyone?

It’s back. The weather app issues are back. I read an article earlier today that said that so many people are having trouble with the Apple weather app that developers are back to making new ones. Apple should have just taken @TheYayAreaLiving 🎗️ and my advice. Just bring back Dark Sky.

Just looked an Weather, both Widget and app on my 13PM are wrong. They natch but what they show is not what the weather really is.

Ugh. :(

iPad Pro - Mail

Ran into a new item.
Email with attached pdf. Open email, view attached document, Print from Action Menu. Just prints blank pages.
If I save the document to Files and then Print via the Action Menu, it prints just fine.

If the update goes FUBAR are you okay with that?
If yes Install else ... ;)

Precisely.

To which I would add: if you are not interested in being an Apple Guinea pig (reporting bugs etc) and there’s nothing particularly exciting in this beta, why bother? Save yourself the aggravation.

But at the end of the day only YOU can determine if it’s worthwhile. Everyone posting in this thread has given you lots of reasons, both positive and negative, on which to base your decision. But YOU have to make the decision yourself.

Another Tab issue :(

Have a couple of tabs open, click a link in an open tab and the tab goes blank and becomes unresponsive.
Latest actually involves this site. Long press on the alerts notification (bell) and select to open, the tab goes dark and locks.
Couple of SS from today and yesterday attached.
Had this happen on a couple of sites and it always involves a long press.
Doing the same and Opening in Background works fine.

Reported via Feedback.

I’ve been running into this one a lot on beta 3.
