You do know the mini exists right? It’s not only “phablets”
And have you seen / used a “mini”?
Because I have, and probably the only positive (excepting tech features) is the weight.
The screen alone is bigger than the entire SE, which I have to admit isn’t actually small, so I don’t even know how when or why we started referring to non-phablets as compact, and normalising those encroaching on iPad territory instead.

Mini in name only. But then Apple does like weird names and labels.

Small edit / addendum:
This prompted me to look up the screen size of the “Mini” and of phablets.
Although Wikipedia and assorted manufacturers have put sub-5” devices into the category; the definitive entry seems to be with the introduction of the “uncomfortably large” Note at 5”
Meanwhile; Apple themselves detail the screen size of the Mini as 5.4”, so bigger than this Note line in the first place.

My point was about being on the latest OS. When I paid $952(with tax) for the iPhone in 2016, my assumption based on past support for iPhones was that it will be on the latest OS till 2023. One reason, I specifically chose iPhone 7plus was because it had 3 gb ram.
iOS 16 comes out in September, you only missed 2023 by 3 months. You will probably get security updates probably all of 2023. iOS 12 was getting security updates until September of last year.

It's so crazy to me that they dropped support for A9/A10 iPhones while all A9/A10 iPads are still supported. The 2017 iPad 5 has the exact same A9 & 2GB of RAM Apple used in the iPhone 6s & first gen SE and it still gets the latest iPadOS 16. It would've made sense if they axed all A9 machines and kept the support for all A10 ones, but this is just confusing at this point

Pretty snarky considering you’re complaining about your iPhone 7 you just spent almost $200 to fix and someone is trying to help you.

Most people on this thread are here to express our frustrations with Apple's iOS/iPadOS update policies, as can be seen with the 6 pages of comments here. Nobody could have help me except Apple, which is a foregone conclusion at this point. I'm well aware of the options for me going forward(even before I came to this thread).

Seriously? iphone 7/7+? Even I, dont have 6yr old phone.
There surprise is that iOS15 had support for 7/7+ and 6S and not that the iOS16 wont support those devices.

Go and get an android phone if u want a phone for a decate. Also adroid phones (the majority) wont even have support for the upcomming android OS. They stuck with the one they come with. ;)

Some peopel are incredible...

These are the Apple devices I currently use,
  1. 2 - MacBook Pro retinas 15.4(1 to be retired shortly)
  2. 1 - iMac 27" 5k
  3. 2 - iPhones 7 plus,8plus
  4. 1- iPad Pro 2020 12.9 512gb
  5. 1- iPad 2019
  6. 2- Apple Tvs
  7. 1-Airport Extreme
In addition, there are numerous other Apple devices I have owned, which have been retired. I'm a millenial btw.

Only, in an Apple forum will you be lectured on you don't know what you're talking about and how dare you own a 6 year old phone.

Incidentally, I also own 2 Teslas. I mention Tesla here also because there seems to be a perception that both these companies(Apple and Tesla) have a reputation of many(not all) of its product owners being "extra enthusiastic". The word used to address them starts with "F" and ends with "y". Thankfully, I do not belong to that camp.

Apple dropping iPhone 7 and 7 Plus software updates with iOS 16? Can't be true! How could Apple abandon a perfectly good (and expensive) phone that was sold until 2019 - just 3 years ago? Very disappointed customer.

I’m pretty amazed they seem to be getting away with dropping support for the iPod touch.
To make a similar comparison; that iPod was discontinued on 10th May, so 4 weeks ago.
I‘m going to assume there’s at least one more revision of the current iOS design to be released, before Apple loses interest completely. But effectively ‘currently supporting‘ the last ones sold (by a still active company) for just a couple of months is probably going for some record or notoriety.

Check out the iPod Touch 4th Gen in 2013. Almost as bad as the Series 3 watch now.

They were still selling it the summer before iOS 7 was released, and it was stuck on iOS 6.

Gotta make money on the iPhone front. This could drive some users to upgrade to a new device if their phones are no longer updated.

Just got a new battery for my 6S this week. This is my 3rd battery (2nd battery replacement). I’m going to wait at least for the new iPhones coming out later this year. Might even try and wait another year on top of that before upgrading (though I will probably upgrade). Most apps won’t immediately drop support for iOS 15.

Your approach makes sense and the second part also confirms what will happen now that iOS 16 drops some phones.

That also means in my case, since my 7 freezes and overheats all the time, it'll be stuck that way until I upgrade. Apple won't release any new fixes or improvements. Just security updates.

I too am on my 3rd battery, got mine replaced in March 2021.

What about iPad Pro 1st gen 12.9 with 4gb of ram?
I think that is one of the few iPads that is going to GET iOS 16. Maybe the ram was the factor?
But the A9 in it is a dog even on lower systems :)
I have it too and its time to look for sth newer.

I’m now concerned as someone who likes to travel that Apple may remove the physical SIM outside the US next year, so I think I may replace both my iPhone 6S and my iPad. My iPad is a first gen iPad Pro so it will still get the new operating system.

Though I use wired headphones that work well, and my wireless headphones badly need replacing. So no more headphone port would likely lead me to consider getting new wireless headphones which is another cost.
