Here’s what I’m wondering - when you group multiple applications together, and you are using one application in the foreground (e.g. a text editor), do the other apps pause? Do they reload when you focus on their window, like a safari tab/window reloading after a few minutes in the big, in the current iPadOS?

If apps are kept alive/active while in one “group” or “stage” or whatever they’re called, that would be a HUGE improvement…
I was able to scroll content of the background window when I tested it now. It was the YouTube app, and new videos appeared as I scrolled down so I believe it is still live even in the background.

Disabling Stage Manager while multiple windows are open will cause the two most recently used apps to snap to side by side multitasking.

its not MacOS.

Its never intended to be MacOS.

This is a nod to "windowing" that still makes sense in the iPad environment.

If you want or require a MacOS style windowed environment.... well... you know.... but a Mac.

The iPad will always be a different experience than the Mac and they must always remain distinct so people have a choice what they buy.

An iPad with a Keyboard and mouse cannot and will not ever be directly comparable to a MacBook.

People buy iPads for their portability and simplicity of use. A complex multi windowed environment will just make it inaccessible for a lot of users and will be frankly unwanted.

This seems a decent compromise but as far as it needs to go.
I’m aware of why people buy iPads vs. Macs and vice versa. I never said that I expected my iPad to run MacOS. I said I think that people who see that iPadOS now supports windowed apps might get frustrated because they’ll assume it works like every other windowed OS, and it’s nothing like that at all.

And the experience is not as “distinct” as it used to be, considering Stage Manager is coming to both macOS and iPadOS and was presented as working the same on both.

Is this real or photoshopped? If real how did you get rid of the stacks on the left & the dock at the bottom and why does the window on the far right have the resizing UI on the left hand side whilst all the others are on the right hand side.

Perhaps you might want to add a slide over window and a PIP video as well! ;)
In control center, if you long press the Stage Manager icon, you can turn off the stacks on the left and the dock.

It doesn’t have to be a different experience though. There is still choice if they are the same. Apple wants you to buy both devices and keeps the IPad just behind in functionality to need a Macbook for certain things.

so you want the iPad to be a MacBook but without the keyboard attached?

Not going to happen. Thankfully. They need to be for 2 distinct user bases.

Considering Apple sells a keyboard case with a trackpad, I can’t see why we at least don’t have the option to run something more similar to MacOS. It was one thing when each ran on different chips.

But the iPad vs. Mac is an entirely different topic altogether. In regards to Stage Manager on iPadOS 16, as it stands in beta 1 it’s not great. Those hoping for a the simplicity of dragging and resizing windows are going to be surprised when they see just how complicated Stage Manager actually is.

I disabled Stage manager within 10 mins as I found the feature impractical and stupid. Maybe I am the only one, but everything felt cluttered and stress inducing. For me, the multitasking dock is enough.

Maybe I will revisit when GM build of iOS 16 drops in Sept. In short, it’s not so much useful to “me” as per the hype.

YMMV

I already reinstalled iOS 15.5 for the same reason. I’m sure they’ll clean it up, but as it stands now it’s probably the most counterproductive feature the iOS/iPadOS team have ever implemented IMO.

Can anyone confirm if stage manager works on the 64GB iPad Air M1? Ive seen a comment on these forums saying it only works with the 256GB iPad Air M1.

I am trying out stage manager on my M1 12.9 iPad Pro and I am surprised no one is talking about the ability to have an app full screen on a monitor. The ability to use HDR on monitor as well. I am using a Dell Thunderbolt dock and it is charging the iPad, using my LG G560 gaming speakers and Logitech gaming mouse. Writing this on the iPad with Lightroom on full screen on the monitor and music playing. I mean this is awesome!

I’m actually surprised how solid this Dev 1 beta is. Been installing WWDC dev beta releases for years (ADC member since 2001), and so far, this has been the smoothest.

I’ve been holding off but reading a number of similar posts almost has me ready to install.

I find it to be basically useless on my 11" iPad Pro. It would definitely be handy when connected to an external display, and maybe on the larger canvas of the 12.9" display.

Agreed, that is certainly one of the best features with iPadOS 16. I have a LG Ultrafine, and having a single USC-C connection that gives me full screen access, powers my iPad Pro, and connects all of the peripherals connected to the monitor, is a major step forward.
Stage Manager as multitask option is much better with an external monitor, mouse and keyboard. In a way, I wish they would actually come out and straight up tell people that Stage Manager is intended for those who have a desktop setup.

Really? This I have to see.
