You could use a 15" ish portable monitor also. But I'm assuming this would work, but I don't see why not.

I have a 15.6" portable QLED monitor that's very good. I will try that with my 12.9", and the Magic Keyboard. External monitor support has been a weak. It would be good if they are addressing this.

Oh wow. Can you show what the screen looks like once you hide the side dock or whatever? Can the app screens then take up the entire desktop?
For your reference. 3 apps horizontal or 2 apps vertical.

I for one think the way external monitor support was implemented is a home run. I'm starting to get used to it with my use case. Looks very clean. Stage manager itself will take some learning. I hope they don't change what I learn before the final release. LOL.

as a registered Apple Developer im sure you are used to change and realise that beta 1 which is what you are currently running can and will be amended before public release.

So, say I'm using my iPad connected to an external display and I press the 3 dots menu to make an app window full screen what happens? Does it fill the full display?

And if so how do I get between full screen apps and Stage Manager?

That is great! I have also seen a screenshot on another thread showing 4 windows side by side. See link...

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/ios-16-ipad-stage-manager.2347017/post-31157200

How do you go from a stage manager setup like this to making one of the windows fullscreen? Do you press the 3 dots? Can you use a gesture? Is it possible to close windows? If so how?

I assume slide over is still available when not using stage manager?

Many thanks!

Hello
- Yes, use the 3 dots to Go full screen, add more Windows or Minimize the current one
- I think no gesture available so far
- Windows management including free resizing is much easier with a keyboard/mouse attached.
- Slide over is not working if Stage manager is on

Because this is just the first beta, I think this function is being developed and will be brushed up further.

To add to the confusion, the previous multitask interface exists while you’re in Stage Manager. So while in stage manager, you can still invoke the entirely other way to multitask. It’s convoluted to say the least, in its current state.

Yeah, I’m getting big Windows 8 vibes from Stage Manager, where there are several disjointed task-switching paradigms.

I'm wondering if I'll actually use this. I don't use multitasking as it is now. Just is annoying. I'll bet this is annoying also. :D

Sorry. I'm pragmatic

Maybe with an external monitor.

Thanks for the details.

When you say minimise, what exactly do you mean because obviously it is not the same as minimising a window on mac?

So slide over doesn’t work at all if stage manager is on, even if it is not currently being used? Or slide over doesn’t work when stage manager is in use but works when stage manager is on but not in use?

Thanks!

I use side by side apps, sometimes half and half and sometimes 67/33. Can't say I find a use for slide over. If I had the 12.9" I think I would do more with multitasking.

Here are the functions of the Stage Manager (copied from 9to5Mac) for your information.
  • Resizable windows: Resize your windows to make them the perfect size for your task;
  • Center app: Focus on the app you’re working with without going full screen;
  • Fast access to windows and apps: The windows of the apps you’re working in are displayed prominently in the center, and other apps are arranged on the left side in order of recent use;
  • Overlapping windows: Create overlapping windows of different sizes in a single view, giving you the control to arrange your ideal workspace;
  • Group apps together: Drag and drop windows from the side or open apps from the Dock to create app sets that you can always get back to.
- Minimize (Minus): the window goes to "Recent app" list, removed from the Group of apps
- Slide over: not working at all if Stage Manager is on
(The function of the "three dots" changed and also cannot call a slide windows from the Dock)

Considering Apple sells a keyboard case with a trackpad, I can’t see why we at least don’t have the option to run something more similar to MacOS. It was one thing when each ran on different chips.

But the iPad vs. Mac is an entirely different topic altogether. In regards to Stage Manager on iPadOS 16, as it stands in beta 1 it’s not great. Those hoping for a the simplicity of dragging and resizing windows are going to be surprised when they see just how complicated Stage Manager actually is.
Exactly!

No!

Think about it... its just not in apple's interest to make the iPad behave the same as a Mac. They are different products aimed at different people for different use cases.

Arguably... in their attempts to appease the "i must have windows" crowd they are making iPadOS very very messy now. There are 2 distinctly different multitasking environments to know about and learn.. only a subset of iPads can even run Stage Manager leading to some real confusion as people upgrade in September....

Personally i find the current iPadOS 15 implementation high functional and it does what it needs to do yet it is still not really intuitive... many people forget that they maybe have many instances of Safari open yet dont really ever know about it or see it - stage manager seems far more user friendly. Given the choice I would prefer to work in Stage Manager given the visibility of other running apps.

Fortunately for those who want the iPad to remain simple.. even if they can they dont have to activate Stage Manager.

Why would Apple, at this point, make iPadOS look and behave like MacOS. If you want a windowed environment then buy a Mac - its not as if Apple dont have a product that works just as you seem to want it to.

A touch first interface just cant be windowed in the way you want... and Stage Manager seems a reasonable compromise to that way of working... if thats what you really want.

This isnt to say that sometime in the future the iPad, or the MacBook, will become obsolete. We have seen this happen over and over - the latest example being the death of the iPod. The iPod is a huge iconic brand that was ubiquitous but now of course its been swallowed up by the iPhone. It was inevitable and took a while to happen but it happened and Apple were quite willing to kill off not only the iPod device, but also the name too (theres no iPod app on the phone after all).

Is it possible to disable automatic window reordering? to always have the application 1 above, 2 below...

Does the windows alt-esc shortcut exist on the ipad (works differently from alt-tab)?
if so, is it also affected by this automatic reorganization?

the goal is to work on app 1, alt-esc, work on app 2, alt-esc, work on app 3, etc.

@stocklen i just read this whole thread and you are persistently antagonizing everybody. why do you feel this is your duty? why are you accusing everybody of not being a developer and having the developer build? apple has released a feature that moves the ipad more towards macos than ever before, why are you trying to shut every person down for making that comparison as well?

@RiotMilk excuse me... but this is the problem with forums today...
people like you come in and start to accuse others of intent that isnt there.

'persistent' and 'Antagonise'? I think not - you really need to understand the meaning of this. when someone articulates an opinion that might be different to your own its not a reason for you to jump in and accuse them of being a persistent antagoniser.... isnt this the reason we have forums to present differing opinions? Someone is not antagonistic just because you see it a different way to them.

Hang on though... you yourself clicked 'like' on my first post in here - post 11 to refresh your memory. This is quite the 180 :)

My point, which yes ive gently made a couple of times in here is that all the complaints, nitpicks, and comments throughout this thread and this forum are from people who simply cannot appreciate the nature of what they have in their hands.

Let me be clear.

IOS16 is currently one week into BEATA 1. Beta release 1. This release has been provided TO REGISTERED DEVELOPERS ONLY - for good reason. Apple are very clear about this. This beta IS BUGGY - it IS NOT how the final product will be and it IS NOT intended for non developers to get their hands on.
The Beta is NOT to be installed on a users primary device and at this moment in time is provided to developers to enable them to test their apps to ensure they have the most lead time possible to get ready for public release in September.

Now, again my comments are a tongue in cheek reminder that clearly there are thousands of people out there who have illegally got their hands on the software... and more than that they they have the cheek to come on forums and start to complain about it.

Look at youtube... of course EVERY iOS reviewing YouTuber has already downloaded, installed, and made dozens of videos about iOS16 - are they all registered developers? are any of them developers? I doubt that but they have of course got themselves the software through illegitimate means just so they can have content for clicks and revenue...

This is my opinion. Im quite allowed to articulate that opinion and at no point have i been unpleasant or nasty to an individual its a shame you cant understand that.

PUBLIC beta is coming out in a few weeks. This is when 'ordinary' people can, if they want to, get hold of the public beta build which will be a bit more polished and more appropriate for non developers to have a play with.

There should really be a moratorium on these threads until the public beta is released or at least have a developer sub forum here where legitimate developers can swap questions and ideas about the developer beta release.

If thats touched a nerve for you then thats your issue. I would appreciate you not accusing me of something that I have not done.

That’s actually not true. I’ve never developed anything other than a bigger credit card bill buying Apple products. Many if not most of those on the AppleSeed discussion forums are not developers. We received invitations, at least I did, years ago to join the beta test program.

What determined who got those invitations is unclear. For me I believe it was my past participation in the Apple community discussion forums, that’s the only relevant reason I can think of, other than being a regular customer.

Until just recently we had to accept an invitation for each new major beta release - macOS, tvOS, watchOS, iOS, etc. Now our participation just continues and we can decide which release for which product we want to install and test.

My personal process is to wait until later beta versions because I no longer have a sacrificial extra device that I want to offer up for the inevitable issues.

I agree with you about the whining - there will be issues, many of them, that will affect users differently depending on the specific use of the device involved. But hammering people about being developers or not is misguided. Most of us are not, but we should still be cognizant of the risks regardless.

i hear you. i'm just saying that after i finished reading everything here, and as you pointed out this wasn't my opinion after your earlier comments which i had even liked one of, it felt like a lot and i was like legitimately annoyed that i wasn't able to just read more of the interesting thoughts people had. at a certain point stop saying the same things to new people and just let the conversation proceed without you, as i am also going to do now :)

it's really not up to you to decide if people have valid complaints or not or if what they are doing classifies as whining. we come here to read those complaints and people's thoughts, not meta arguments about whether it's valid for people to have those thoughts.

The whole "if you want MacOS, buy a Mac" argument is so tired. I don't know how many times it needs to be explained, I would much rather use my iPad Pro for everything, but I can't given the limitations of iPadOS, so I must own a Mac. Given that they both run on the same chip, it's frustrating that Apple doesn't even allow users the choice of which OS they'd rather use. Especially considering they allowed us to dual boot Windows, their direct competitor, on Apple hardware since 2006! And it's still supported on intel Macs, they updated bootcamp 2 months ago.

If they're going to market and sell currently five different iPads (iPad, iPad mini, iPad Air, iPad Pro 11 and 12.9) at the very least allow those who spend top dollar on an iPad Pro, the same price if not more than a MacBook Pro, the ability to run a more complex OS should they choose. Those who want a simply, touch only interface, there's the iPad, iPad mini, and iPad Air.
