Did they 'split it' from iOS just so they could explain why they don't give it all the new features right away? lol
Actually that is starting to seem like the only logical explanation. It was too hard to keep releasing at parity, apparently. Typical Apple talked it up like it was a good thing, but now it seems like the pattern is: develop iOS. Port its features to the Mac. Also do something with the iPad if there’s time.

There was no reason to lock multi window behind the M1. External monitor support for multi window, sure.

Seems like Apple just wants to put everything before the M1 behind them as quickly as possible. And for Apple that’s really fast.

With iOS 16, Apple is giving users unprecedented levels of customization for the Lock Screen, letting them change the font and colors, add widgets, and so much more. None of those customization features, however, are coming to iPadOS 16.

While in most releases, iOS and iPadOS share many of the same features, this year there seems to be a larger separation between the two platforms. On iPadOS 16, at least in its initial first beta, users can not customize their lock screen with custom widgets, colors, and themes. Instead, Apple has just changed the default font for the clock.

Despite iPadOS 16 missing out on the lock screen customization features, it remains a significant release. Most notably, Apple has brought window support for M1-based iPads with a new feature called "Stage Manager." iPadOS 16 also beings desktop-class app features to the iPad such as new context menus, undo and redo in more apps, and more.

iPadOS 16 and iOS 16, alongside watchOS 9 and macOS Ventura, are available to developers for beta testing, with public betas planned for each in July.

Why can’t Apple just hire Android devs at this point? You telling me it takes 5 years to bring out widgets to Apple? How pathetic is that. And people have to wait year or two before this makes way to iPadOS.

Apple is billion dollar company and they are just bringing out small updates to iOS and iPadOS every year. And every thing they bringing out now is a copy features that Android as done over 8 years ago how pathetic is that.

If Apple is moving to this kind of update cycle now than Android, Windows and Linux are bringing out more interesting features now well Apple is just playing catch up to 8 plus year old features Android has had.

Apple is billion dollar company and they cannot hire enough programmers to bring out proper features that should been there 8 years ago.

Where is Apple when Steve Job was running the show? Start bringing out a dam proper iOS and iPadOS than these pathetic incremental updates that take 10 years to being out features that android has done in one year 8 plus years ago.

Post dam job applications at your website and hire some programmers and bring out some thing revolutionary than running on skeleton crew of programmers playing catch up.

These Apple keynotes every year now are getting worse every year.

It would appear Apple is trying really hard to make it not as functional as a laptop with stuff like this. Really scratching my head here. We're going to give you a keyboard/trackpad and give you macOS adjacent features, but going to keep snubbing you on a Terminal and things _real_ power users want. Apple slaps Pro onto everything and tells us they are for power users, and I'm not buying it. Apple has to know they're intentionally gimping the iPad to force folks onto a MBA/MBP. Considering the price point on the iPad, it _should_ come with more features closer to macOS.

It doesn’t at all seem strange that improvement’s brought over from the smallest screen we’re a better initial fit for the iPhone than the iPad. The effort it would take to retool and redesign what are essentially interactive AppleWatch complications to be effective on a 12 inch iPad is probably better spend implementing extended desktops and windowing, don’t you think?

This is bananas. They always leave out key iOS features for no reason.
Probably because they are now two separate teams and since they haven’t worked together in the same building in two years there is less collaboration and synchronization. Remember features need to be tested on device up to 5 years old.

Gotta have something for iPadOS 17 I guess.

No running on a skeleton crew that is why. It goes like this you have new feature, you have new bugs, security updates, new feature and still bringing out bug fixes and security updates to last year. Apple is getting cheap and just giving you incremental updates.

Wait for it yes it be 6 or 8 months just to clean out bugs in this year iPadOS and iOS than bringing out these small incremental feature.

How can dam company like system 76 that has not enough yes not even 1% of Apple money done what it did with popOS and get firmware and things going with just little people and billion dollar company cannot bring out wow factor any more but play catch up that takes them years.

To people complain the company is not going change its way but get worse.

I would say external monitor support will be better on windows or Android and same with file manager. But may be Apple has proven me wrong this year and we will wait for the reviews.

Other than that windows tablet or Android tablet is looking more interesting if Apple is playing this small incremental update every year now.

I didn’t even think of the resizing. Would probably add more work for the engineers.

I personally am a little mad that they didn’t at least bring the Lock Screen changer (minus widgets) but not too mad. Don’t use my iPad enough to justify being too mad about it.

Just looove the iOS customization. Can’t wait till it comes out!

iPadOS really is the ugly duckling of Apple 😅. I was surprised they announced anything. For a while, it seemed they were going to skip iPad altogether 🥴.

I agree with all of this. Which is why I'm most excited for the Fold 4.
