Going with a .1 beta release is fine until your new iPhone comes with .0 and none of the automatic migration works. Did that really happen or was it a nightmare I had? I’m being very careful with the iPhone beta versions this time. Definitely avoiding any .1’s on the phone.

It's always been that way. You need to update the new device first to the beta and then migrate/restore it. Also, this is iPad specific so new iPad's won't be released until October anyway so by that time, it should be fine.

So, what happens to the people who downloaded iPad OS 16.0 on their devices? Are they being forced to update to 16.1 now?
Public release version of iPadOS will be 16.1 in October. There will be no public release of iPadOS 16.0. The only people in iPadOS 16.0 are those on beta 1-6. They either roll back to 15.6.1 or carry on the beta train which is now 16.1.

Makes sense. Thank you for answering my question in depth.

iOS 15 and co. introduced upgrade helpers during phone setups. The phone actually prompts you to upgrade to beta releases to finish data migration.
I used that when I got my M1 Max Pro earlier this year and had my older MBP on a RC point release. The setup assistant allowed me to download the RC and finish the migration.

I can‘t vouch for it on iOS though, this year is probably the first year I can realistically try it (depends on whether I hop on a potential 16.1 beta or not).

There is no GM build anymore old timer.
That terminology got replaced by Release Candidate a while back 😉

The RC will be released on the day of the event, in the Dev portal, which is pimped out at 7th Sept, potentially.
If you had read my post, you would see that I did say RC/GM. From what I remember I always used the developer profile to download the RC immediately after the event. Don’t remember if the PB had it.

I did read your post, why do you think I took the time and replied explaining that the GM terminology isn't used anymore and hasn't for a while. So there's no need to write it like this RC/GM, it just looks confusing to anyone reading it, hence why I explained. Just trying to help you out.

Public betas will get the RC, always does going back from iOS 13.5 for major and point releases. They wouldn't jump from a beta, to a final release just on the Public, but the Developer gets an RC. An RC will always bridge that gap, beta, RC, final release. And both Dev and Public betas are in sync now till final release, has been since beta 5. 👍🏼

Developers will see the RC in the Dev portal or OTA after the event, Public RC will probably be the day after, if not a few hours after the Devs get it.

It is certainly possible.
Possible, but I’m going with fairly unlikely. One big reason I think that is that iPadOS beta was 16.1 Beta 1, it would have been 16.0 Beta 7 and the. With Beta 8 for iOS 16 bringing iPadOS beta 1 with it instead.

Also, there tends to be about a 2 week period between the last beta released and then the RC, which is almost always available after the event. This last iOS beta puts us on that track.
Also also, the first beta usually gets a 2 weeks window, too.. So maybe we don't see a new iOS 16 beta or a new iPadOS 16.1 beta this week at all.

Considering iPadOS 16.1 has gone its own way now, we could still get another beta of it this week, just for the fun of it.

Might be wrong, but I’m still thinking a beta 8 this week……

Seems to be quite a few battery gripes with 13PM and I’ve noticed this laggy keyboard on a few websites which takes a hard restart to fix as the phone gets very hot, along with RAM management with some devices… let’s hope so hey. Or at least a new build number for the RC fixing these. Ha.
