More speculation... What do you guys think iPhone 14 will come with? Which software? iOS Beta 7 or Beta 8? I don't think Release Candidate will be installed.. will it?

It will come with the finished version of iOS 16. There will be a release candidate and, barring any problems necessitating a second release candidate, that’s what will be on it. It will likely be beta 8, which Apple has had finished for at least a few weeks prior to its developer/public release today.

Yes, it will have the final (RC) absent a last minute emergency bug fix.

The RC is already done and loaded on the phones. Apple is 3-4 weeks ahead internally on iOS versions. Beta 8 was probably build 2-3 weeks ago.

I cannot get myself to rejoin the beta trains.. I have the profile installed and Beta 8 downloaded but cannot get myself to push "Install". What has happened to me?

Makes sense. Thank you! Fingers are crossed.

Well, I said it was possibly, but not likely, so I was wrong partially. Apple keeping us on our toes!

Sticking with RC after the event and the public release being the Tuesday/Wednesday of the week the new iPhone releases.

That's a myth! They are a week ahead at max. Look at Beta 7: It was released to public on August 23rd with a kernel build date of August 16th. So the kernel was build one week ahead of release of that build meaning the full image could not be older than that ;)

I took beta 7 as an example because beta 8 is using the same kernel build in August 16th.

Yes, but iOS 16 for iPhone 14 is not exactly the same as what those of us with older models will receive, because we will not receive most or none of the new features that the new models will include. So you can perfectly have an RC version for the new models already being loaded, releasing this for everyone after the event and after seeing all the news in the presentation.

Whether its 1,2,3 or 4 weeks, the point is that what we get on beta release day is not built that day. Nor do we know when Apple starts loading software onto new phones. For that matter, we don’t know that the phones will ship the typical 9 or 10 days after the event. Perhaps they’ll be released 2 weeks later this year? That might explain why we’re getting a late beta 8.

I still stand by (although I’m still unable to find it again online) something I remember reading regarding Apple’s ability to update en masse OTA in stores while still in boxes. I thought it was something like Patently Apple or something that had an article about it. Was years ago, though. Unless it was something they wanted to try but haven’t started doing yet? Oh well.

This is exactly what I wondered. How do they do all these updates. It can't possibly be one at a time. And can they do that where the phones will update without any input on the device? Does it just automatically power on, or is there enough residual power for updates?

But can we see the build date by looking at this?? “iOS Darwin Kernel Version ― 22.0.0: Tue Aug 16 22:26:03 PDT 2022” ? Just asking

Not really an indicator of the build date, but you can read it as the build date was not earlier the Kernel Version date.

If you unpack the IPSW file and look into the date files in the DMG's, that could be a good indication of when the build was actually made. For b8, it looks like the build was created on Aug. 24th at 6:22am.

iPhone 13 arrived to customers on 9/24 with build 19A341, but the final developer beta (beta 8) with build 19A5340a was released on 8/31. The release candidate was 19A344 released on 9/14, but then the final build released to the public on 9/20 was 19A346.

I'd gather beta 8 is more or less final but we could see a few builds skip up to what is on devices when they arrive to customers, and 16.0.1 may be on release day or very shortly thereafter.

Great post!

I know this ain’t speculation but just bought a new iPhone. I had iOS 16 so my question is how do I download the backup from earlier today once I download the beta to new device? Thanks

Assume erase all contents and settings would revert phone back to 15.6.1?

Now sorted

Just wondering when to delete the public beta program profile off my iPhone 13 Pro Max so I will update to the official release. Thanks!

Apparently if you have the last public beta you won’t get a prompt to update cuz it’s the final. Idk so confusing.

Not quite. We should still get the RC some time after 7 September, which will be a rather big download. Then, all going well, the public release will be identical to that RC, so there won’t be anything new to download once iOS 16 comes out to all.

What is RC? I am wondering the same about when or how to get off the beta version and to the regular OS.

RC is short for Release Candidate. It's a potential build that may get released to the public. There could even be multiple RCs if issues are found.

Last year, however, the RC build and the final public build were not the same for iOS 15.

Yep that is the conventional way Apple does it. But, I will surely, do another dfu with the final release of 16.0 ahah
