I"m

I'm on 17.1 beta 2 and the issue still persists for me in that my messages are not downloading anything past 9/28/2023. I've done this:

Settings app, tap on Messages, tap on Siri & Search, turn off all of the settings shown, restart the iPhone, and re-enable those settings in order for the issue to be fixed.

I can confirm that it made no difference at all. I'm hoping it just takes time but it's been 30mins so far with no downloading of messages. I know they are all there because I can see them on my MacBook Pro.
For me, it's Messages pictures don't go back further than say a month or so ago (before iPhone 15 release). I can scroll back through the messages to get to those pictures, but they're not in the list of all pictures to any particular person. I'm hoping that this fixes it for me, but not holding my breath. My wife has the same issue on her new iPhone 15 Pro as I do on the 15 Pro Max, and it's super annoying. All those pictures are still there on my iPad and Mac, but of course those weren't upgraded recently.

30 mins of doing what? When everything was working properly, it still required having the phone charging, locked and connected to Wi-Fi for at least overnight for any noticeable amount of messages to download.
30 minutes of it being plugged in on wifi with no change and it's never taken overnight to see my messages. I know how this rodeo works and if you're curious the phone is still plugged in with no change or update to messages. When I got the 14 Pro last year and after the restore was completed my messages started downloading right away with no issues.

Can confirm loads more pictures appearing and it's still telling me at the bottom of the Messages photos list that, "More photos will be shown once Messages finishes indexing." Woohoo! Yep, thousands of them appearing, finally!

Does 17.1 fix the bug where downloaded music isn't showing up as taking up space in iPhone storage?

Search has been broken so since a 16 dot release. It always returns results for apps you set not to search. 17 has made it worse, now it returns calendar results of holidays in 2024 and 2025 when you set it not to search calendar.
This issue is specifically for the search within the Messages app.

None of that works, tried it all.

Plug your phone in to charge for a while. That’s what got mine moving after using 17.1b2 for a couple days.

Mine too. I use to be able to go into messages and go into a photos tab in the messages but it doesn’t show all the photos in the message thread. If I scroll thru the message I’ll see the photos from earlier on but they aren’t in photos when I click the name.

I’m guessing this is same bug.
Yep that’s the exact bug. iOS 17.1b2 finally fixed it for me.

After three attempts of transferring iPhone to iPhone and Message indexing not working for the life of me, I just initiated a restore from iCloud backup to see if that makes a dick of a difference. Then I came on here and just saw this posting. This was driving me absolutely crazy and had me considering returning my 15PM & just sticking with the 14MP. Hopefully good news, if it indeed is a fix - not holding my breath though..
I did the same thing. Two phones and 3 reinstalls with zero results. But I can confirm this update did fix it for me.

Yeah, I agree. Right now my watch hasn't been tracking sleep and I see like a hundred devices in my health data sources list I can't remove.

It's ludicrous in particular for messages because you can literally see every message by going to ~library/messages and the whole messages database is there stored neatly and always perfectly downloaded. Considering iOS has had a file explorer and uses the same SQL database there shouldn't be this much of a disparity. Not to mention the disable and download all button on iOS does nothing and toggling on off messages in cloud is likely to get you some files, but remove most smh.... sorry for the rant I've wiped this iPhone 15 like 40 times this week

Are you worried at all about it being beta?

Is this only on the beta or has anyone had luck doing this with 17.0.3? And does the watchOS firmware need to be on PB beta too?

There are always some minor quirks with a beta. For example, if I touch an autocorrected word while typing this comment, Safari crashes instantly, 100% of the time. But I’m sure it will be fixed next week.

I’ve also heard a few people say they can’t send/reply to text messages via Siri in CarPlay. I am going to test that out tomorrow if I remember.

But those are minor to me, in comparison to having my message search results back. So it just depends on your priorities and riskiness.

This issue is specifically for the search within the Messages app.
Or for missing images in the list of photos in Messages for any given recipient.

Only with 17.1 beta 2. Watch is irrelevant. Haven’t updated that yet.

I’m not considering it fixed until 17.1 is officially released and I see it working, because if Apple broke it once in the iOS 17.0 betas they can break it again in the 17.1 betas.

Some users said they needed to open the Settings app, tap on Messages, tap on Siri & Search, turn off all of the settings shown, restart the iPhone, and re-enable those settings in order for the issue to be fixed.
I’m not going to remember this

But if it’s even fixed for one download, the pictures aren’t going to disappear again until the next upgrade. Zero regrets installing this beta. I finally have all my photos back.

Do you think your pictures will keep disappearing again with every new upgrade to iOS or new iPhone?

I'm not having any luck on 17.1 beta 2, been a couple days now, phone has been left plugged din for a while, tried the siri messages settings on/off/reboot thing, it causes messages to show the "indexing" message for maybe 5 mins then it goes away when while still plugged in and on WiFi (getting 800 MBPS speeds so its not a bandwidth issue).

Trying a complete phone replacement now to see if I have any luck, this is ridiculous.

Such a bummer. I hope the new phone works for you. I'm afraid to do the beta but am anxiously awaiting the actual build.

Was the phone locked while it was charging? I heard someone mention that. Like when mine didn’t work on the first day, I think it was because I was using the phone while it was charging. The next time I charged, I left it on the charger while I slept, and that seemed to work.

Also I will warn you it’s not the phone, it’s the software. I got a replacement and had the exact same issue until a couple days after installing 17.1b2.

Did you have to do any of the toggling tricks, or did simply installing the new firmware automatically get things going and fix it for you?
