I'm more than a little curious to learn how the meddling EU megalomaniacs intend to handle a likely increasing number of users who don't update to iOS 17.4. Forced software updates for the greater good? Respondents to this post can scoff all they like but I'd opine in advance that such posters have probably been asleep at the wheel of life for a minimum of four years.
Nothing iOS 17.4 brings is mandatory. Outside the EU nothing is changing. Inside the EU you have more choice. Period.

Impact on people not willing to upgrade = zero.

And again if you want the openness there has been an operating system that does that. Android.

That is like me buying chick fil a but being upset they don’t offer hamburger and then the government making them serve hamburger. I have a choice to go elsewhere.
You have a choice as well, if you don’t like apple’s new policy.

Not today sure. But tomorrow, Japan, China India may also change their laws and offer users choice. In that case, just like the charger, Apple will decide to open up in the whole world rather than fragment their entire ecosystem.

Thankfully this is for the time being EU centric. So good for them.

Unfortunately should it come to us and we are forced to do things an android way I’ll find a way to not deal with it.

I refuse to use usb c. So I wirelessly charge. It’s a hassle having to carry it with me everywhere I go BUT I refuse to use usb c because I was fine with lighting

You mean mandating non-webkit which means developers now have to deal with many browser engines for their website and users have to deal with many browsers as undoubtedly some websites will require Chrome instead of Safari?

yeah, I speak for the World: "that's stupid".
Sure, like everything in webKit is awesome and works. There are plenty of sites not optimized for webKit now and you cannot do anything about it. Finally there will be some alternatives to Safari so you can find a browser with usable video player, maybe one not opening a small frame video and making the rest of the screen black. Don't get me wrong. Still I think that Safari for iOS I far more superior to any Android made browser, but seriously, if Apple don't want to implement some functionality, couls just let others do that.

Good to see the new emojis and Podcast transcripts. Other that this all other changes are only for EU

Unfortunately, I still don't understand what is preventing users from continuing to use their device exactly as they did before the changes. Those who want more freedom are happy about the ADDITIONAL option and everyone else uses their iPhone as before. And yet there is such an outcry from some here. I don't understand it.

That’s because US users can’t think like that. They think any option is forced onto them. We’re also getting an option to install the full version of chrome now:

I come from a time before web standards and it was slightly less amazing than you make it seem.

The convenience offered by users having no choice is a Trojan horse.

Cool. But you just addressed a point I didn’t make. And ignored the one that I did 👍

EU is not targeting Apple or Safari.

You are, once again, saying something no one said. EU's action is simply allowing said thing to happen.

Advocating for less gov is the stupidest thing you can do

Wrong. see cookie popups.

It’s not the EU’s fault there are cookie warnings everywhere.

It literally is. The cheapest way to comply with EU are these popups. EU should have predicted this would happen.

Have to say, wouldn't use most of the changes and wouldn't change my default browser, but would want to download the full on Firefox browser with uBlock Origin on it...definitely enjoy that to all the folks across the pond.

Since this is just the EU, Chrome won't wipe out Safari worldwide, but it will be an interesting test case to see how much marketshare and how fast Google slurps up that space for a default browser in iOS with Chrome.

It's a bit of a quandary with human beings that life is full of constant change and yet people fight changes (even beneficial ones) tooth and nail.

This doesn't feel like side loading. There's no ability to directly install an app from a website. It's all through App Stores approved by Apple of apps approved by Apple (albeit to a slightly lesser extent). Apple still seems to be acting as a gatekeeper, just turning a blind eye to content it doesn't like.

Not getting into the rights and wrongs of that, but will the EU accept it?

Apple: introducing a default browser option
World: that’s amazing

EU: mandating more choice

Mandated choice. The here's an oxymoron if I've ever heard one.

You could choose Android. There was the choice. Mandating a company to be more like another OS people are already free to choose, is choice... influenced.
