I’m thinking this is more technical than malicious. If all browsers have to be able to support this behavior now, all browsers would need updates to register to open PWA apps. That may also include code for the “chrome-less” view. If you are doing that work, then Safari is going to be adjusted to use the same new API as the third party browsers. I’d expect this to be fixed in a future beta.

They're modifying the entire system to allow for competing browser engines. It's no surprise that not every browser-related feature will work in the beta or maybe even the early releases.

I mean, they probably need to allow other browser engines everything that Safari does. Surely, this feature will require much extra work in terms of browser APIs, so they might have to turn it off or be in legal trouble if they can't get it to work.

The reaction to this is absolutely overblown.

I mean, what motivation does Apple have to turn off PWAs only in the EU? Why wouldn't they just turn it off everywhere if it was a business decision. It doesn't make any sense. 100% this is related to the implementation changes that have to ship in the EU next month.

Really? Maybe it's my AdBlocker then. The only time I was ever asked was on WhatsApp Web on my iPad. I even see it in the notifications settings but still nothing being pushed
You need to add the MacRumors forums to your home screen and then make sure it launches in fullscreen (and doesn‘t just open Safari). After that you need to enable push notifications inside the PWA by going to the account settings.

Apple literally implemented the web push standard, making millions of websites compatible in an instant if they provide a proper service worker setup (my sites all became compatible without any updates, because it‘s a standard we‘ve added support for years already).

Apple is getting sketchier by the day. Been using Mac nearly 20 years and iPhone over 10 but I may start looking at Galaxies. I hate admitting that not wanting to look poor or lower-class plays a part in my not wanting an Android phone. For my next computer, though, I’m looking at a PC.

iOS and MacOS have gotten buggy as hell and what they charge for RAM and storage upgrades is unconscionable, especially considering the low specs of base units. I like my 13” M1 Air but it doesn’t offer any advantages. Intel Macs were amazing due to boot options. The PowerPCs before them had their own merits (and Jobs-era dedication and QC). After the Watch launch and the BEATS acquisition is when Apple really started losing its soul.

I’ve been avoiding most EU related threads here for months due to this. I do not feel like level heads are prevailing on a lot of these topics, just people getting really passionately angry over things that are up in the air.

Apple has been “maliciously compliant“ with a lot of this, but I really think this is just a hard feature to implement and their beta release cycles can’t grind to a halt making sure every beta is perfectly functional. I also agree with other posts in this thread that it’s probably broken in part because how iOS handles PWAs has been changed and the third party apps can’t target the new SDK version until the RC comes.

Apple forget who is their customer. Is it the EU legislator or the EU people who pay Apple. No European know how to contact the EU parlement, so they won't put pressure there.
Still Apple gets fined or banned from the EU markets if they fail to comply with EU regulations.
It would be indeed best if Europeans would actually know how to contact the EU parliament and voice their concerns about overreaching regulations that are not in the best interest of the People.

Having outside entities take over the screen is recipe for an avenue of phishing schemes as evidenced by questions people have now when some web page takes over the page.
Have you ever used a web app? Again, it's been a feature since the original iPhone release. You have to deliberately create a web app by navigating to the share sheet and selecting "Add to Home Screen" in Safari. It isn't something that a website can create automatically.

eh those Web App Push Notifications have never worked for me anyway. Not even Macrumors supports it
I get MR notifications. They periodically disable themselves, especially after iOS updates. You have to open the PWA, go to your account preferences, scroll down, and tap the button that turns on notifications. When you tap that button, the app will send you a test notification to confirm that it's working.

****** move by Apple.

But let's face it, PWAs are **** and a terrible customer experience compared to native apps

Progressive Web Apps are designed to offer a user experience comparable to that of native apps using web technologies,

Not even close to 'comparable'

Seems like this is probably necessary to make sure the user’s default browser is used (as demanded by the EU, I believe). Elsewhere, they will probably continue to use WebKit and the custom “browser” built for this purpose.

Sometimes you get exactly what you ask for, especially when you demand it, and it isn’t exactly what you wanted. In this case, though, it’s probably exactly what the EU wanted. Just didn’t exactly think it through.

hmmm just says "Push notification not supported" on my iPad (running iOS 17.3) and iPhone (running 17.4.b2). I guess the problem is that it does not even save it as a PWA to my Home Screen. It just opens the browser tap in my normal safari browser among other open pages, even on 17.3

Apple's behavior is pushing me to go back to android and deal with google. I always have preferred android to IOS but hate google's spying. But I will put up with the spying just to get away from Apple's bullying.

It says that if you are looking at preferences in your browser.

You have to make it a PWA first by adding it to home screen.

Then open the PWA and sign in.

Then go to preferences to turn on notifications.

But if you are already looking at the PWA and it still says not supported, then I don't know what's wrong.

I’m not sure this is one of those cases, but there will definitely be cookie pop up spam-like issues somewhere within this legislation. Utter Chromium web dominance will probably be one.
