I wonder what devices will be able to run 17? I only just got my iPhone 13 and ipad 9 in this last year. 2022.
Hard to say, it’s become a little unpredictable, and support between iOS and iPadOS is radically different. If I were to guess I’d say no changes to iOS support, whereas they’ll drop the iPad 5. Either way your iPhone 13 and iPad 9 will be safe for a while.

Between designing for side loading and the Apple AR headset it's no wonder Mac product development seems like it has fallen by the wayside. They've got their hands full on both the software and hardware side.

Agree with everyone that I'd love to see a Snow Leopard year. That OS was simply amazing. Especially since most of my PC brethren at that time were comparatively running the mess that was Windows Vista.

Also, wow, it’ll already be 10 years since the iOS 7 UI overhaul. I still miss the more 3D-ish design (not necessarily the skeuomorphism) with clearly identified UI controls.

Much like flared jeans or cowboy hats, things come around in cycles. If you wait another 10 years, perhaps that style of UI will be back in fashion again?

I very much hope that, though I’m not sure what it’s going to take. One reason flat design persists is that it’s actually less work to create and allows apps to be more colorful.

Unless the app is strategically inconvenient for Apple or they have some other political reason to block it. If they decide to do that you have absolutely no recourse, and they’ve done it many many times just that we know of.
Follow the rules, get approved in 24 hours. Not hard.

Curiously, the Mac App Store was introduced on Snow Leopard.

But yeah, definitely, we need another iOS 12 focused on performance, speed, efficiency and bug fixes.

Oh, look how sexy that hardware looked back then. I’m not sure what rear I like the most, the curvy and glossy 3GS one, or the industrial, luxury looking iPhone 4 one.

The software looks pretty snappy for the machines that run it, tbh. It almost seems like a Forstall miracle.

Yeah, I’m pessimistic as well.
Was there always a little discernible lag in response to, say, a home button press? I share your nostalgia for the designs Jobs oversaw, but this reminds me that a plateauing iPhone also says how good we have it.

And boy, the back of today's iPhones sure look a lot better without all that regulatory text.

If it weren’t for the 95% un-educated users that blindly browse social media and just click on anything that comes their way…
Well, it's time for them to become educated, DFU mode is here to help.
Parenting or lockdowns is also not the solution.

My dad, 15 years ago, had once +-3000 viruses on his Windows PC (all at the same time), and I WTF'ed, took me a whole weekend to fix his box.
Guess what, he still uses Windows, since Windows 8 i never got a call regarding viruses again and all his newer PC's stayed clean.

The problem was, bad system base architecture and as you said technical understanding aka education.

YES, people are able to learn, just like a toddler needs to faceplant multiple times till it learns how to walk.

here's how it's going to happen

- alternate app stores for EU happen
- 1 year passes by, but no major developer makes a serious effort
- pro-sideloaders look at that and say "see! all those who were against it have nothing to worry about, Microsoft/Google/Adobe/Activision aren't leaving the stores, you guys worried about nothing"

- then US passes the law too, alternate app stores happen in USA
- Microsoft/Google/Adobe/Activision pull their apps to force users to download their stores
- These stores offer a poor UX (no automated iCloud backups, separate notification background services = battery hog, uses up too much memory, etc...)

all because people wanted to sideload their apps to download Goldeneye 64 rom illegally to play on their iPhone.

1% loud minority ruins the experience for the 99%.
While I mostly agree. I can also see those companies possibly making a better effort at porting desktop versions of those apps since they have more control. Then again, probably won’t happen, but I can still dream about having the full version of Illustrator on my iPad. I still dread the day where I’ll need more than one App Store on my devices though.

hope there are no battery–drain issues this time!!
also, i don't need always new features — stability and battery is more important to me…

I really want them to update the iOS icons to match Mac OS. The design should be universal.

I'm dreading having to install alternative app stores if the likes of Facebook pull their app from the App Store.

...

If certain apps leave, then don't use them if you're so intensely opposed to getting an app from anyone other than Apple. I've been getting apps from sources other than Apple for going on 40 years now and I've never had a problem with malware or scams or anything else.
I recently installed Acrobat Reader on my Mac. Downloaded it directly from Adobe and "sideloaded" it. What utter crap! It installed tons of stuff, including autostarted processes. And there is no uninstall option. I had to spend an hour to clean up the mess. Stuff that won't happen on iOS and the App store.

Normally I avoid installing stuff on my Mac from corporations. They often have motives that don't align with mine. For example I would never ever install Zoom on my Mac, but I have it installed on my iPad since I trust the rules in the App store. I would never ever install Zoom (or anything) from any alternative App store on the iPad or iPhone.

If Apple allows alternative app stores, I hope that Apple takes the opportunity to purge 90% of the apps and only include apps that Apple themselves like. With alternative app stores, developers have alternatives and are not entitled to the Apple store. A benefit for customers with a better quality store. Bad for developers though; they will have to try harder.

We don't need new features. We need a rock solid system. Tim Cook needs to stop counting his money and must realize the mess his software engineers have created and fix it.
I can't believe they act like nothing is wrong and keep boasting and bragging about their product when in reality, wherever you go and read, you find people that are frustrated by their insanely bad bugs.
Stuff like the keyboard autocorrect, constant UI glitches, Siri being the dumbest voice assistant on the market despite being among the first, IF NOT THE FIRST, to be released on mobile devices.

I've been an iPhone user since the 3G, I loved it for all these years but I'm getting more and more frustrated the more I use Apple devices. I wish they put way more effort in their OS. Not to mention watchOS, buggy, slow, and used way below its true potential.
Oh and let's not forget AirDrop which is always hit or miss: my gf takes photos using my 14 Pro when we're out, and we are never able to send them to her 11 because AirDrop fails. Have to restart my phone or both and hope it gets fixed. Apple, wake the hell up!

Give us Big Sur icons, Big Sur Control center, interactive widgets, universal Dynamic Island notifications, a number row above the keyboard, and iCloud Notifications (see phone notifications on mac and ipad) and I will be a happy camper.

Can’t wait for side loading and alternative app stores. The iPhone is about to become the best emulation device on the market. Perhaps we may even get an Epic or Steam store as well in order to play real games (not Apple Arcade trash) down the road? The possibilities are endless!

Those straps are not going over the ears, they are going directly on top of our ear hole 🤣 which means the strap will slip down.
Omg,..I'm a seasoned diver with a pro mask that looks identical. Do you not realise that you have a gap behind your ears? 🙄🤦‍♂️...ask mummy or daddy, they'll show you 👌👍

With such a groundbreaking change of allowing sideloading, I'm expecting a botched release...
Hopefully it won't be the case, but we'll see.
