If you launch the CarPlay interface on your phone — it will be TINY. Matter of opinion, of course, but there would be some serious squinting involved.
At least on the 6.5"/6.7" iPhones I don't see it being a huge deal. Not far off from a lot of built-in infotainment displays.

I’d like to see this, but for the car. Show me a CarPlay interface when I have it mounted in my car. Just have the UI launch when I’m in the driving focus mode.

I bought one of the first aftermarket CarPlays years ago, I've always found CarPlay a good solution; I've followed the development of CarOS when it was still in alpha. Finally, I found nirvana with a car-mounted iPad mini when needed, despite the fact that I appreciate CarPlay. I'm afraid the iPhone problem is iPhone. In fact they are trying to make it an iPad, in terms of dimensions, but with the prices of an iPhone. I would say that iPhone has given, it and his competitors. The world is ready for more revolutions.

I guess it depends on what you're used to. I don't see myself going from my 10.3-inch infotainment screen to something just over half that size...

Looks like you’ll have to disable a lot of the upcoming features then to make it more minimal…
yea, I'll have to see what Apple is really going to introduce ... and for me, focus, screen time and such features are gimmick, and now they might do this ...as long as all of this is configurable, fine..

Lock screen already shows all that stuff.
In addition, magsafe charging is vertical, as least for me

While fine for the the niche use case of night stand for the moments before we go to sleep and before we wake up, and for those who keep old iPhones, though most presumably give away, sell or return for the upgrade program. So that far more realistic use case will most certainly be on iPads.

A Nightstand Mode on iPhone 🤔

Well, yeah. This idea would presumably be aimed at people who have a car — new or old — that doesn’t support CarPlay on the built-in infotainment system, if there even is one. Of course running CarPlay on your built-in system would be better.

Yea, I hear you, I doubt, however, that while developing CarPlay(and doing so quite slowly) Apple will simultaneously be coming up with workarounds for cars that aren't compatible. Just my opinion.

Why would this be limited to a horizontal (landscape) display? Seems like the same data elements should be visible in portrait mode. If it requires slightly different design for portrait, so be it!

I don’t own any smart-home things, but for those who have, I’m happy for them. For me this has zero interest.
I think by "smart home" the article is referring to things beyond "smart home devices", because they include calendar appointments. I think they mean generally information that one can act on?

The only "smart home" device we have is our thermostat. Nevertheless, I look forward to this development. Excited to see the new iOS 17 when it's in general release form.

Not really. It would remove all non-carplay elements and just have the carplay-compatible app icons. And then you could chose whether you wanted the split screen, based on the size of your phone
