iOS 17 Rumored to Have 'Fewer Major Changes Than Originally Planned' as Apple Continues to Lose Focus

Fixed it...

Stop making TV shows and let the other guys provides those apps and clean up your product portfolio.
Are you suggesting the people that make the tv shows interfere with the people that do the software development? (It may be true(/s), but I like their TV shows, so I would want them to keep making them.)

I too like Apple TV's offerings. This last week I added another show to the list of Apple TV shows I watch, which was Severance. Looking forward to season 2, and the new seasons of For All Mankind and Ted Lasso.

Instead of lots of new features I’d much rather see speed optimisations and bug fixes. In trying to compete with Andy-roid, iOS has become too complex and messy (like Android in fact). I looked back to early iOS versions and how much more streamlined they were. Yes I like a few of the newer features but some of the simplicity and elegance has been lost in the process.

IMHO a Mac is a full computer, a smartphone shouldn’t even try to emulate all that functionality but instead do some things very well.

Severance is superb. As is Slow Horses.

Management may very well be distracted, which can be a problem.

I wish the C-suite would spend less time playing up their public personas (in interviews & Apple events) and more time making sure their engineers have the support they need to fix bugs and make truly great software.

I'm looking at you, Craig.

It’s possible, anything is possible. It’s also possible management is laser focused and this is their plan.

Maybe I’m just getting old…but i don’t think AR & VR are gonna be as huge as some people think they’ll be. When I asked my teenage niece about AR VR & the “metaverse”, she just laughed and said all her friends think it’s stupid. I know that’s not very scientific… i just don’t think it’s gonna take off like the smartphone did. Not everyone is gonna want one. I see it as a very niche thing. But what do i know? 🤷‍♂️
And I had 9 nieces and nephews between 7 and 17 at my family Christmas gathering who all enjoyed playing Beat Saber. I’d kind of dread when one of the older ones would ask to try it, because everyone else would want a turn when they saw one cousin playing it.
We also played some 4 play co-op games on the TV. And physical board games. They all have a place.
My family is quite spread out over the US. in the future, it may be fun to play board games over the internet in VR when we can’t meet in person. I’ve already enjoyed playing games like poker and Cards Against Humanity in VR with internet friends.

I think iOS 15 and 16 have become convoluted. Too many complex features, things that have moved around and that are not intuitive anymore.

And iPadOS 16 with Stage Manager is also not the typical frictionless Apple quality we’re used to.

So if they spend resources on polishing this without adding new crap nobody wants, I’m happy they’re allocating remaining resources to xrOS.

If true, I'm not happy about it.

Its not like they dont have the money to hire more people for development and R&D.
They switched to a tick tock release schedule years ago. One year on features the other on refinement and performance. Just hiring people does not mean great products. They have to be the right people. Not having people in the office is a huge hit on productivity, though many will claim they are working just as hard, if not harder. That is completely false.

iOS 17, the next major update for the iPhone, could be a less significant update than Apple was originally hoping as the company, and its engineers, focus more heavily on the upcoming AR/VR headset.

Apple has been working on its AR/VR headset and its accompanying operating system, xrOS, for several years. With the launch of the headset now expected in 2023, Apple's engineers have been focusing less on other operating systems, including the upcoming iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 updates, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

In his latest Power On newsletter, Gurman says iOS 17, which is internally codenamed Dawn, could end up having "fewer major changes than originally planned" due to Apple focusing more on xrOS for the upcoming headset. Gurman says a similar approach is taking place with macOS 14, codenamed Sunburst.

iOS 14, announced in 2020, and iOS 16, announced last June, were two significant updates, bringing redesigned widgets to the iPhone Home Screen, App Library, new features in stock apps like Maps and Safari, a redesigned lock screen, and more. iOS 17, alongside iPadOS 17, macOS 14, and watchOS 10, will be announced during WWDC in June.

Another story that tells us nothing at all. I guess Gurman needs to feed his customers every week, so he needs to find something to write. The Apple world would be much better without him writing about Apple..

I just want Imessages to be overhauled, and more abilities on apps allowed to run in the background for example Lumafusion and Davinci resolve on ios when you are exporting if you go to home screen it cancels the export unless you chose the windowed mode I honestly forget name. I just want ability on background apps option to not pause or stop a app when you exit

Interesting how they are betting on a rumored to be $2-3k, ski goggle-ish, battery nerd clipped to the belt AR headset, at least they are pushing into new ground which I can appreciate. I have to assume they have some sort of killer app or interface for the AR, although at those prices I'll also assume their target is more business and manufacturing.

well it was not officially said obviously because apple hasn't said anything. it was posted on here as a rumor so ignore what i said if you want but it's not too crazy to think it could be true. people need to realise that likely this is the beginning of the end for iphone. they won't disappear anytime soon but i think in 5-10 or even 15 years we'll look back at 2023 as the decline.

a lot of people found it hard to believe that the iPod would ever disappear because it was such a huge hit. it'd be stupid to assume iPhone will be around in 15-20 years.

but hey i suppose the headset could be a total failure but i think apple have a good idea what they are doing with it.

To think a $2-3k ski goggle monstrosity that is already rumored to have a belt clipped battery will be portable and cheap enough to be ubiquitious even in 5-10 years is a bit optimistic IMO. Even getting people to wear a "regular" set of eye glasses will be a challenge, maybe we'll see more penetration when AR headsets are built into contact lenses. Although that technology is already here, I doubt it will be at a price palatable to the unwashed masses for a while.

macOS still has some major weak points (Safari), a smaller iOS 17 update will be ok if the hardware changes enough.. Lot of disappointing news lately, though - M2 Extreme cancelled, same form factor for the Mac Pro, no upgradeable RAM solution; still no 27" iMac or iMac Pro.

For simplicity, they could bring back the 27" iMac (or make it 30") and call it the iMac Pro to parallel the MacBook Pro, similar price and customization options. A step up, but not a giant step like the last iMac Pro. Make the Mac Studio the new Mac Mini (drop the prices across the board and expand the spec downward for the entry level), Mac Pro is the same Mini/Studio aesthetic in tower size.

macOS still has a LOT of issues, sometimes I wonder how people actually use this every day. I've spent the last week attempting to work around issues as my advisory position on a board is now requiring me to use macOS more and more. Want an external display? Sorry then you have to live with a hot, fan happy computer (look up the Window Server issue and external displays), then I can't get Ventura to recognize my 4k TV as a high DPI device and have to squint at tiny text or be forced into a lower resolution (for the love of Pete just copy Windows DPI scaling), and I can't even get 4k 120hz on TB3/HDMI 2.1 because Apple wants me to buy their monitors. I can't use my keyboard to control the volume on a HDMI display. My i7 crawls to a halt and the fans go nuts every time I do something that my 8 year old Surface Pro can handle with ease, best solution I found was to download an app that turns off Turbo Boost. Windows snapping in MacOS, nah instead we get complete junk like Stage Manager, thank God for BetterSnapTool, oh yeah there's also the issue with using the Dockbar AND having a menu bar on top, and even with both still not having the functionality of Windows. And that's just getting started...

OK sorry for the vent, it's been a looonnngggg week in MacOS hell. My point is that Apple should be working hard to smooth all that stuff out instead of looking for the next "feature."

An earlier rumor pointed to features being scaled back to some degree because of EU legislation regarding the App Store. Between this and the big focus on VR/AR, this makes sense.

Finding the right people and onboarding them isn’t easy. More money doesn’t make more programmers.

So in other words, when you asked children about a failed attempt at ar/vr, they didn’t see the appeal. Wow. Total shocker. Like asking people what they think of google stadia and basing the entire gaming product category on that feedback alone.

We’ve seen augmented reality in science fiction movies for decades and the utility it provides. Yet somehow despite all this, people that haven’t even seen apples attempt at a product like this are quick to call it a fail. This just smells of the original iPhone launch all over again. I know. It doesn’t have a hardware keyboard and touch screens on phones suck. “Can’t imagine a product like this ever succeeding”

We’ll see
Dude. First of all, I clearly stated my observation wasn’t “scientific”. But i do think teenagers are a good barometer for what’s “cool”. Secondly, I am a huge Apple head. Been one since before it was cool to be one. And I never underestimate their ability to surprise & dominate the market. All I was stating was my personal opinion & observations. Doesn’t mean AR won’t be a huge thing. Or that I am bashing Apple. Y’all are so sensitive. Again, as an artist, I’ve been using Apple products my whole life. Never owned a pc. I LOVE Apple. Sheesh. 🤦‍♂️

No one wants Augmented Reality or Virtual Reality. We want practical tools to assist us through our lives.

AR and VR are just video games.

Hard to believe we are trying to be pulled even further away from actual reality.

If I’m being honest, there are many big features that were added to iOS in recent years that I just don’t use.

Tried widgets on the Home Screen several times but not worth the space for me.
Wanted to love App Library but my home screens work fine for me.
Freeform looks great but I can’t think of a use case where I’d use it.
I haven’t seen any use of App Clips.

I applaud their efforts and acknowledge that all updates don’t have to be for me. They’re likely very useful for others.

My point is that past major feature releases haven’t always done much for me anyway.
I really wish they would focus efforts on stability and reliability.

My idea exactly. They are going to be forced to turn iOS into "Apple Android" by the EU, so they are going to have to change a lot about how iOS works. And also how they make money off of it. Which indeed could lead into Apple moving away from iOS / macOS towards a new system (the VR/AR).

Honestly, I feel how this EU move is going to stifle innovation.
