Not counting smart phone enthusiasts, the fascination with smart phones has fallen off. I gave my wife my iPhone 12 Pro because her iPhone 10 crapped out. I bought the iPhone 14 Pro which is a good smart phone for sure there is little to be excited about regarding features and improvements between the two side from a few bells and whistles. I think that this is true across the board including Android as well as iOS phones. I could be wrong though seeing that new iPhones sell out as quickly as they can be manufactured.

Apple should go back to quality control and just make iOS stable to correct many ongoing issues like wifi/network issues and battery issues. Too many iOS updates with incremental changes with stability issues.
Fix the current iOS before creating another version.
It will never be stable even after 3 months if beta testing there are always bugs no software is bug free so that argument of no new features and stability is silly as it’s never gonna come out stable so might as well have something exciting

Not sure if I’m misremembering but we’ve been hearing this for at least the last three years.
Exactly, and some people have been happy for the supposed improvement in quality this would mean. Guess what, we didn’t have new notable features and the quality took a dive nonetheless. It will be the same with iOS 17. Apple is hard at work to give us zero features but also as many bugs as possible.

They may be. There is a limit to the number of resources that can be thrown against projects as demonstrated in the aphorism about the doctors.

I disagree. It's not like any team is a island unto itself.

Or could make things worse.

Yes.

There is a limit to how many resources they can dedicate to a project, until the productivity flattens out, imo.
You're missing everything I am saying.

If Apple is pulling people off iOS17 development to focus on AR then the iOS team is not operating at its max.

Maybe its lag in hiring. Who knows. Maybe the teams are being built back up but that takes time and iOS 17 will be a victim of that. But if AR is the future and a major amount of workforce and energy will be focused on it, then Apple should be able to build to up to that an no have it negatively effect other parts of its business and software development.

iOS 16 hasn’t been that buggy, it’s barely had any changes apart from silly Lock Screen, we need a major ui change a fresh look and interactive widgets and split screen something exciting iOS has become boring as hell year after year, they can’t even hide the home bar
Battery life is still noticeably worse on my 13 Pro Max compared to iOS 15 and I still get crashes, glitches, and all sorts of system f***-ups. It still feels like it’s stuck in limbo in the early iOS summer beta stage

I work for a multi-billion company and we can't even focus on 1-2 things without ****ing them up entirely.

Yeah sometimes people forget large companies are made up of many departments and each department has their own budgets, multiple deadlines, can have their own echo chambers and points of failure. It's a big task for a manager or VP to handle because they aren't flawless themselves.

There is also the problem that big investment banks like Blackrock put unreasonable and high pressure demands on companies they invest in.

If a Blackrock or Vanguard demands that a company builds foldable spaceships and inflatable planets, even if it is a stupid idea, then many companies are pressured to do it. And then the financial media starts hyping foldable spaceships and inflatable planets.

If that means more optimization, the better.
I just moved to Ventura (13.1) mostly for Metal 3 and to be in tune with the times, but I use almost none of the new features.
I'd rather have a stable system.

Maybe I’m just getting old…but i don’t think AR & VR are gonna be as huge as some people think they’ll be. When I asked my teenage niece about AR VR & the “metaverse”, she just laughed and said all her friends think it’s stupid. I know that’s not very scientific… i just don’t think it’s gonna take off like the smartphone did. Not everyone is gonna want one. I see it as a very niche thing. But what do i know? 🤷‍♂️
not for 3k they won't.

I think AR glasses certainly will though.

I tend to agree... but I also acknowledge there is tremendous potential. A high risk / high reward type situation. Could be a nothing-burger, but if the technology is perfected and comes together in the right way at the right time could change society.

Kinda like how there were smartphones and tablets pre-iPhone/iPad, but then Apple changed everything and hit it at the right time.

I have an even better idea: focus on stability and quality. I've had enough with the random bugs. Currently I can't tap on the "Sleep" button on the bottom of the lock screen anymore, when Focus is activated.

But each and every new release gets some of this random cr@p these days.

So a 2 Trillion Dollar company can't focus on two major products at the same time?
There has been studies on this in business where, at some point, it doesn’t matter how much money an organization has, over a certain amount of employees and managers it becomes very difficult to stay nimble and focus on many projects at once.

Anecdotally, having worked for corporations for 20+ years, I find this to be true.

I could not be less interested in Apple VR or any other VR but I use my phone (and computer) on hourly basis, every day. Taking away resources from the phone (and other OSs) is not a good idea, especially since there are tons of bugs they could be fixing.

I want to be optimistic and say that’s what they are doing, fixing bugs instead of working on new features.

I think there is potential here, moreso than the car. And they need another gravy train so they can stop squeezing users with “services” so hard.

You don't know how the teams are structured, nor how they interact or what are the dependencies between the teams, etc. You're making a strawman argument about this, one that fits your point of view. Anyway, carry on, we both believe what we believe through the perceptions and biases we both have.

Mistake. Always remember where your bread is buttered!

Also Homescreen widgets were the pointless update we never asked for and not a “substantial” improvement - can’t speak for anyone else but can’t recall ever using it, helped in part by the fact there’s only a few different options to choose from and little third party suppory.

Do a side by side compare on the Apple website of the 12 Pro vs. 14 Pro and you will be surprised by the number of upgrades. And that is only two year difference. For most people who buy after 3-4 years, the change is dramatic

Did Microsoft totally fix Windows 8.1 before they released Windows 10?
