there it is, without fail, every year!
What is the obsession people have with redesigned home screen icons?
You know there’s a reason Apple doesn’t change something like that very often, right?
They have 2 billion active devices, changing up the way everything looks for all those people shouldn’t be done simply because it’s been a while since the last time they did it.
The Mac can get away with it because that’s a much smaller group of people.
The iPhone… not so much.
They’re icons, their goal is to be recognizable and (for lack of a better word) iconic.
They can’t reach iconic status if they change every year.
Also, plenty of icons have changed over the years, just because they don’t change all of them at once Doesn’t mean none of them have changed.
If only the witless wits at Microsoft stopped frigging around with the interface all the time. So annoying that the interface and icons is constantly changed. I personally don’t mind but I know people who really dislike it and hate that there’s no native way to easily go back

Its extremely amusing to see the same people who freaked out that the mute switch might turn into a button calling it “change for changes sake” also want a total overhaul of the user interface of every operating system every year… because the current one is boring.
Personally I’m fine with interface change, but not when it’s one that’s going to confuse millions of people for no reason.
Easy to forget, but it took months for the modern iOS 7ish design to finally sort itself out and become fully implemented, and it took a while for some big gaps to be filled.

sounds boring, where's split screen, new ui Home Screen with new icons, and interactive widgets? we have had the same look Home Screen for 10 years
Might just be me getting older but I don’t get the obsession with new icons and new Home Screen design. If it ain’t broke… don’t fix it. If you want new icons and all of that stuff, get an android

Have you heard all the people here asking for a new iOS version with limited new features that focuses on bug fixes and refinement.
bug fixes happen all the year with updates also what's the point of 3 months beta testing just for bugs, every OS always has bugs even iOS 12 which wasn't a big one still had a year worth of bug fixes so what's the point

I’ve grown quite bored of iOS. I switched in 2019 after a decade on Android mostly for the Apple Watch. But I’ve outgrown the Watch in favor of a Garmin as I’ve gotten really focused on training, so now I don’t have much reason to stay.

There are still a laundry list of things I still scratch my head wondering how or why Apple designed this OS the way they did. To name a few:

1. Notifications: good grief Apple blow them up and start over. Like ten years ago.
2. Data sharing between apps: most of Apple’s apps don’t even do this, I took this for granted on Android but it’s really awful on iOS and never improved.
3. Multitasking/multi-window: another feature on Android I took for granted, I seriously thought they’d introduce this after we got PiP but it never came.
4. App icons/Springboard: take springboard and chuck it in the trash, please. Although part of me thinks it’s intentional from Apple so everyone has a tidy home screen. Either way burn it with fire and let me place icons where I want them.
5. Siri: see things that need to go into the trash.
6. HomeKit: join Siri in No5 above.
7. More default apps: let me choose more third party default apps.
8. Keyboard: for the love of all things holy please improve the keyboard accuracy. This has to be the worst typing experience I’ve ever had.
9. Photos: we finally got shared library but I think I hate it more than not having it at all. Like why are shared albums still so bad? Why is search so terrible?
10. Mail: can we get better spam filtering? How about better integration with Reminders and Notes instead of remembering once every four years I can ask Siri to do something that can easily be added to a damn menu?
11. Passwords/Hide my Email: can we please get this in app form?
12. Widgets: thanks Apple for finally giving me widgets but can you kindly make them interactive?

I’m not trying to sound all that negative, I can probably list more things I do like about iOS but the whole platform feels stoic and stale, and I find Apple software as a whole rather lacking. For the record I don’t think Android is all that much better but at least I feel like a technically inclined adult when I use it.

What's not stable? I don't experience any stability or performance issues. Have you reported it to Apple or visited an Apple store? I'd suggest you have Apple replace under warranty if that is your current experience.

I just want to update to a new iOS and feel like its new and fresh, it gets boring looking at the same thing for years, nothing really has changed after you install IOS it feels just like the other years ones

I don’t really stare at my Home Screen and am in an app like 99% of the time I’m on my phone but that may just be me. Aside from a redesign, there have been a lot of features added so I’m content. Don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t be opposed to new icons and stuff but I definitely don’t need them

How can I explain this? iPhone 14 Pro Max 1TB running the latest iOS 16 update.

Apple should redesign the awful camara UI photo editing UI on iOS. I mean, they used to be perfect on like iOS11 or something, but then they changed them for the sake of change and now they're just cumbersome to use. And to make it worse/consistent they adapted both on iPadOS, which makes horrible use of the available screen space.

Also, while I'm complaining... why has System Preferences on the Mac become so horrible??? They adapted the same look of iPadOS but that **** is vertical, which suits the iPad but it's horrible on the Mac. Some UI choices they're making these last few years are just terrible. System Preferences is a perfect example of that.

We get stability and performance problems with every release. It's been a while since I've seen a relatively clean release.
and guess what no iOS will ever be bug free, thats why there's a year worth of bug fixes, its because it cant be bug free even after 3 months beta testing

Not every version is equally buggy. I daily drove iOS 12 from 12.0 beta 1 until iOS 13 because of how much more stable and speedy it was compared to iOS 11. I had never done that before or done it since.

You do realise that all accounts point to the "dynamic island" aka floating notch being on the way out? Apple are moving to a hole punch, then under glass. In a couple.of years,..no more notch.
Yeah but even if they get rid of the notch, why would they get rid of dynamic island? It's a FANTASTIC addition to the user experience and if the notch was gone, there's no way the dynamic island area would be gone too. It's a form of multitasking that is so effortless and fun. I love it.

We all have our sources. For instance, I used to write for 9to5Mac ages ago. This user was correct about a big new feature last year. We’ll see. But some of us aren’t just “random forum users.”
I see, thanks for the confirmation.

I know that on Reddit, to make sure that the info being posted is legit, the mods on a subreddit will usually verify the OP's identity. Do you think MR took similar precautions before posting their article about this?

I'm not so worried about it. There's a consistency now across all three platforms, and let's face it, a touch screen Mac is likely in all our futures, unless Apple decides to offer both touch and non-touch Macs, the way there are touch and non-touch Windows PCs, simply because a touch screen is much more expensive than a non-touch screen.

I too was annoyed by the Sys Prefs change but now I'm just used to it. The old system layout certainly was used for many years... and this new system can be refined etc as needed.
