Yeah but even if they get rid of the notch, why would they get rid of dynamic island? It's a FANTASTIC addition to the user experience and if the notch was gone, there's no way the dynamic island area would be gone too. It's a form of multitasking that is so effortless and fun. I love it.
They would get rid of the island but likely keep a more aesthetically pleasing UI area at the top for such things. As a designer I would tint or shade such an area to match the background accent color and the area could either take up less space or provide space for an additional item, such as increasing the limit of items displayed from two up to three. When not in use the area would display disappear into the background.

I see, thanks for the confirmation.

I know that on Reddit, to make sure that the info being posted is legit, the mods on a subreddit will usually verify the OP's identity. Do you think MR took similar precautions before posting their article about this?

I’ve been out of the game for a while, but I would guess this is probably a source that provided specific information that was later verified at release and is still anonymous. I had nothing on Mark (Gurman) who was a pain in the ass to work with but typically an anonymous source means they aren’t vetted like a verified source.

We would get tips in all the time and 99% of them were garbage. You would not believe the free time some people have. Like we would post something and there was this guy who would proofread the entire thing and send us an entire list of corrections within about 20 minutes. And then some of the leakers ended up becoming writers, lol, but those were mainly the guys spending endless hours digging through code.

I stopped mainly because Mark was so hard to work with and also because the pay wasn’t great. We would generate our own Google ad code and a few of the ads in the story would kick back to us so we only got paid by Google and then Seth didn’t have to treat us like employees with a payroll or taxes or healthcare, lol. Although he was super nice and that’s kinda how the business is, or at least was. I was also finishing up college and super busy so it was difficult to hit that grind when Mark had unbelievable sources deep inside the company. There is rarely a thing he reports on to this day that I would ever doubt. The guy is a rumor machine and was constantly working.

iOS 17 will include sideloading cause DMA requires it and even if they make it an EU exclusive (which I think is very unlikely), you will be able to use it even outside of Europe beacause iOS is the same everywhere

Some iOS release way back in the depths of time had a focus on optimising battery life and even explicitly mentioned it in the release notes which is very unusual for Apple (that one time only?). I’d love to see battery life improvements explicitly mentioned again as a key objective for iOS 17.

When I see the issues people are having with iOS 16 losing them some battery life vs previous releases I feel so sorry for the various hardware teams in Apple who have worked so hard to create such power-efficient hardware only to see some of the fruits of their labours squandered by the software teams that in my view do not perform to anything like the level of, for instance, the Axx SoC design team(s?).

Edit to fix auto-correct changing what was supposed to be “and” into “AMD”

Agreed! Why can't we get something like this? The current iOS icons start to look outdated now. Mac OS icon needs to integrate with iOS 17.

It's funny, I was at a concert last night and everybody had their phones up in the air recording (like they do). All I thought was how boring iOS looks now in comparison to Android (mostly Samsung devices)

I think now more than ever we should be 'allowed' to fully customise our phones. And add a bit of multitasking in too!

Apple on device search is a hot mess.

It seems there are different search algorithms for just about everything (safari bookmarks, contacts, Keychain, etc.) that return inconsistent results (not just hits but the lists are sometimes reversed or jumbled up).

Just a few (note this is just iOS, consistency across and within other xOS seems to not be better.)

- Top level search won’t reach into places like Keychain even though on is authenticated.

- Can’t use Boolean logic to search.

- Hide my email doesn’t even search in the notes field.

- Keychain won’t search passwords.

- The same string searched in different Apple Apps may return a result or none at all.

I’ve written to Apple a few times over the years suggesting it appoint a Search Tsar to clean things up by improving functionality and results.

To my mind the current situation suggests there is a lot of search related code overhead in the operating systems.

That is all I want 👇

Stability & Performance.

That is my wish as well. Tenths of bugs I reported fixed and second wish is up to par support for more European languages. It is bummer. I do not expect Siri even there were leaks about it 10 years ago but some interoperability like call Siri in English but let dictate message in my language would be really useful.

And my personal wish. I want to be able to add audio content to Music app right from phone. One I created myself or free content that is available on internet.

Apple is expected to expand the Dynamic Island to all four iPhone 15 models this year. On the software side, the source said the Dynamic Island will be able to "do a lot more" on iOS 17, without elaborating. Introduced on the iPhone 14 Pro last year, the Dynamic Island currently displays system alerts like low battery percentage and incoming phone calls, and Live Activities such as Uber rides and NBA scores.
Sounds like a logical step to take with iPhone 15 standardize on what the iPhone 14 pro offered. It’s certainly not something not already suggested earlier when the iPhone 14 lineup was being examined after announced.

0. Make Siri actually useful

hahahaha. but in all seriousness, I'm not sure what exactly is so bad about notifications on iOS. It seems pretty similar to Android? If anything, I can't stand the million tiny icons on the top of the screen on most android phones. I hear this complaint a lot but it's never really substantiated imo
Apps still flood the entire notification/Lock Screen either endless amounts of notifications. I don’t need to see every damn message, at the very least just collapse them all by person then app secondly. Why is this so difficult for Apple to figure out?

sounds boring, where's split screen, new ui Home Screen with new icons, and interactive widgets? we have had the same look Home Screen for 10 years
Considering how many bugs and stability issues there are when they only introduced a new lock screen on iOS 16 and new multitasking features on iPadOS 16 I'm glad to hear this will mostly be a stability update. Previous versions of iOS (iOS 12 comes to mind) that introduced few new features and focused on stability and performance ended up being very reliable releases. They were due for another one.

I can’t get over using the Siri team to remove the “hey” from the trigger. Put them on something useful, like adding a word ( like watch, phone, iPad) so the correct siri knows to answer. Don’t bring your phone and watch into the same room with a Home pod. HomePod will answer and it can’t do half the stuff needed on your device which can answer but doesn’t. Let Siri tell you the pollen count and the type of pollen when she gives the weather. This is some thing we’d like to know before we start a run. Let Siri take you to the last word you typed in notes, so you don’t have to scroll all the way to the end of a long note to add some thing. Let Siri tell you how much is left in your Apple account so you don’t have to search for it. Siri should be able to tell you everything that’s already on your device. There are many ways. Siri can be useful without summoning chat, GPT.
Heck I can literally be two feet from the Bedroom HPM, but the Living Room one will answer which I can't understand because it's all the way out in the Living Room.

Yes with the SLEEP status people can assume I won’t respond for 8+ hours, with being in a MEETING it would presumably only take a little longer to get an answer. I’d also put a „at cinema“ focus to share and people would know I’d get back to them in 2 hours more or less
Even better would be if you could add an autoresponse with a timeframe.

You do realise that all accounts point to the "dynamic island" aka floating notch being on the way out? Apple are moving to a hole punch, then under glass. In a couple.of years,..no more notch.
It will be more than a couple years. Based on the current roadmap the 16 Pro will get a "hole punch camera" plus under screen Face ID in 2024. I suspect the dynamic island will continue to be centered around the camera cutout, but will give the flexibility in apps or when viewing full screen videos to shrink down to just the camera dot. It's only 2026 where the cutouts disappear entirely at which point Apple would probably switch up how the UI works for those models. That is also assuming that the roadmap holds and these technologies are ready for mass market in time and these changes don't get kicked further down the road.

I'm betting iOS 18 will dump all A9/9X, A10/10X and A11 devices.. Everything that received iOS16 will get iOS17..
Mostly agree, however Apple may try to maintain support for the latest iOS version on the 7th gen iPad, since it was only released in 2019. I could see the cutoff for iOS 18 being A12 on iPhones, but on iPadOS 18 A10 + 3GB of RAM, which would maintain support for the 2nd gen iPad Pros as well.
