Aaaah, WebOS! I even had the magnetic charger stand...2006 is calling
Yeh total miss not including it on iPadOS straight away but ya just know surely it’ll come as one of next year’s big additions (milking us nice and slow Apple, well played) 🙄My prediction: this will come to iPads next year.
This reminds me of exhibition mode from webOS.
Good question.Why horizontal mode only?
Ahhh one of those MagSafe accessories that requires the charger to be bought separately 🤦🏻♂️Forté from Twelve South
Yeh Apple just needed to add it to iPadOS straight away but they’ll make it one of iPadOS 18’s major additions next year instead (hopefully at least eventually). This is clever - almost like a trojan horse to combat all of the Alexa's and Google hubs out there. If Apple can turn an iPhone into a true homehub device, they can tell their huge iPhone base of customers that they have no need to buy an Alexa/Google to do the same thing!
Yeh I like my Belkin lightning dock that I use in the office. Only thing I can knock it for is no USB 3.0 data speed but that’s obviously Apple’s fault not Belkin’s.This.
I like my lighting dock. It charges my phone quicker and is more energy efficient than MagSafe.
But only when rotated in landscape mode?To those who keep asking (who I assume, like me, have no magsafe charger) ... it works on my iPhone 11 when plugged into the provided USB / lightning cable.
Oh man that is a great point. Apple! Why you do this? 🙃Cool, but why only in horizontal mode? Most wireless charging docks hold the phone in a vertical position... Also if you ever need to do something on your phone quickly at night, you'll have to re-orient the phone vertically since the home screen only works in vertical mode for some reason.
Is cool but what do ya mean in relation to CarPlay? 🤨One of the top features for me of the day. I hope there is a version of Carplay UI for this.
Yep.But only when rotated in landscape mode?
So do all the MFi/‘MagSafe’ branded accessories contain the NFC chip?Real question does this work on any magnetic wireless charger. I have a ton of the Anker Powerwave stands at work and home.
Edit: my own research is leaning towards no. MagSafe has a NFC chip that the Anker devices don’t have. I purposely got the Anker devices because I didn’t want the higher wattage for stands that hold my device all day. The Anker stands are 40 bucks (not on sale) the NFC chips in the certified stands drive up the cost because Apple. Would cost a fortune to replace them all (I own 5 stands). The Anker Certified stand is what like 150 bucks? Yeah not dropping 750 bucks on chargers.
Yes, and also in lock screen mode. On non-iPhone 14 Pro models, you need to tap the screen to get a short display of the information. Are we sure the phone has to be charing for this to be accessible?
You don't need a Magsafe charger. It also works with a Qi charger or even a power cable. The MagSafe charging adds remember last settings feature. So do all the MFi/‘MagSafe’ branded accessories contain the NFC chip?
Also like that someone else is thinking of slower charging when it’s expected to be docked for a long time. This is why I don’t mind the idea of buying a cheap non-MFi bedside charger that’ll only charge at 5W or whatever (not 15W anyways). Although does ‘Optimised Battery Charging’ basically nullify our concerns? Or I suppose it’d still charge faster/hotter initially than it’d have to i suppose which is what I’m guessing we’re both trying to avoid.
I hope there will be a way to fool the phone into thinking that it's chargingYes, and also in lock screen mode. On non-iPhone 14 Pro models, you need to tap the screen to get a short display of the information.
If this is true I’ll be happy. My mind is already preparing for it to disappear from a future beta and the canned Apple statement that it just doesn’t perform how they want it to unless it’s on a MagSafe charger. You don't need a Magsafe charger. It also works with a Qi charger or even a power cable. The MagSafe charging adds remember last settings feature.
Don’t all screens also have a ‘pixel-shift’ feature to remove the risk of burn in?Probably a burn-in risk, the 14's pro display have more sophisticated solutions to deal with that.
Would be much more cool if Apple would make use of the hardware already on the phones like proximity sensors and FaceID IR illuminators to activate the display when a person moves into the device's field of view (or waves a hand etc). My cheap old Nest thermostat display basically already does this, no tapping required.
It does not require a touch of the screen. Just a wave of hand will activate it. And as long as its charging (wired or wireless) and horizontal it works. Even on older models.Yes, and also in lock screen mode. On non-iPhone 14 Pro models, you need to tap the screen to get a short display of the information.
Thanks, good to know. Assuming you are speaking from direct experience, I am guessing MR had the article out before anyone got a crack at the beta.It does not require a touch of the screen. Just a wave of hand will activate it. And as long as its charging (wired or wireless) and horizontal it works. Even on older models.
