Just curious...what are the biggest benefits of 17.7 compared to 18?
As long as you want. I’m still on 16.7.2 on my 14 pro. No problems. No bugs. Great battery life. I’ll only update if I have an app that absolutely forces me to do it.So...how long can we stay on ios18 for when ios26 is officially out in September? Deactivate (automatic) updates of course. But how long can we keep using ios18?
The biggest ones are usually battery life and speed. I used to use 1 version behind as well. But I updated to ios 18 due to it gives much better “autocorrection” feature (smarter and can do bilingual) than ios 17.Just curious...what are the biggest benefits of 17.7 compared to 18?
The problem with this is by the time an app is unsupported you’d end up having to jump a few versions instead of the next iteration. You could end up with a much slower device. As long as you want. iPadOS yes, major changes from productivity pov. But unsure for iPhone. This is only my personal point of view:
I had a long rough ride on 17 until i was satisfied with its performance - so i don't want to risk changing that!
I really don't like the changes of photos and mail in 18 (that where somehow reversed in 26 though!)
BUT when 26 is finally productive, there is no way back to iOS 18 anymore, so i start to consider upgrading to iOS 18 before the door shuts and there is only 26 left as a "choice"!
Right. I’m aware of this. 😬 That why I’ve been watching the iOS 18 reports on here. I just might take the plunge when 18.6 comes out because it should finally be polished enough and I could hang on to it for a few more years of support vs iOS 16. It will be a sad day though! I’ve used my wife’s 14 pro which is on the current 18.5 and it’s mostly fine but it is slightly slower compared to iOS 16. Of course she doesn’t notice it or care but it’s just a fact that the crispiest fastest performance is always achieved on the first iOS your phone comes with. The problem with this is by the time an app is unsupported you’d end up having to jump a few versions instead of the next iteration. Honestly considering all the features you will gain with the jump from iOS 16 to iOS 18, and how new is iOS 26, I think iOS 18.6 is the right moment to take the plunge. Who knows how long will it take Apple to refine the new iOS user interface… iOS 18 offers a good balance of new features and customization along with the responsiveness of a well tested design. I’ve been using iPhones since the iPhone 4 and multiple iOS updates and from my experience this has always been the case and it’s ok. I get that things get more complicated and the software grows and requires faster processors and more ram. Apple does the best it can with the older devices but it’s always going to give its best to the brand new iPhone that is currently out. My 14 pro on iOS 16 reminds me of how perfect my iPhone 5 felt on iOS 6. The phone felt overpowered for the software. Now we are a few updates in and that crispy performance feeling is starting to fade. And same went for my iPhone 7 on iOS 10. I’ve always regretted jumping off of the original version my phone came with.
Exactly. It would be nice to have the messsages by satellite and the RCS features. Nothing much else excites me. I’m just turning into and old man where when I get something that works great I just don’t want to mess with it. I was always the guy going around the house asking if everyone had updated their phones to the new version yet and I was trying the betas too!Honestly considering all the features you will gain with the jump from iOS 16 to iOS 18, and how new is iOS 26, I think iOS 18.6 is the right moment to take the plunge. When did the keyboard lag start? Have you experienced it since release?keyboard lag on iPhone 16 pro still there and even with iOS 26 betas
That’s cuz every iOS adds more features that newer phones can perform more efficiently than the last generation. Each iOS is designed with the upcoming processors in mind so they perform the best.it’s just a fact that the crispiest fastest performance is always achieved on the first iOS your phone comes with.
