Apple has gone from not allowing this at all, to actively pushing the feature in the span of two years.

I wonder what caused their change of heart?
I agree, seems strange, but much welcomed.

I find odd that they are not providing the same option in Mac OS. I know there are 3rd party solutions there, but if they decided to step in and make this change in iOS, I would think they would be consistent and do it in Sequoia concurrently.

I just set it to always charge to 100%.

Batteries are cheap and fairly easy to change. I don't worry about it.

(Another reason NOT to have an iPhone mini. I did one of those recently, it was a major PITA to open. Every other iPhone I've put a battery in was easy.)

I charge my phone overnight, to 100%, every day ... don't care about battery health/lifespan. Its a consumable, when it doesn't meet my needs anymore it gets replaced
Exactly. I've witnessed many obsess over the health of their electronics and then have McDonalds Door Dashed to them lol

Exactly.

Just use your phone, charge when needed and replace the battery when necessary. People are just looking for things to fiddle with and worry about.

They’re getting to a point where people can hold onto their iPhones for five years. If I’m a shareholder, I’m asking what Tim is doing to replace the lost revenue from iPhone users who aren’t upgrading?
We might be entering a phase of lack-of-power reason to upgrade than the recent for the last years lack-of-battery-life.
See the Apple Intelligence being available only for 15 Pro and M chips.

I am with you. When they started offering this I just turned it off on the phone, though I do leave it on for my Watch Ultra 2. I am still not convinced it's doing much in the long run. Why issue a battery size and capacity and then handicap 20% of it all the time? If that's the case the batteries should be 20% larger and 80% should just be 100% and do the charging optimizations silently.

if they could increase the battery by 20%, they could just use that as the 80% buffer and then nobody would have to have a limit. It would just be a hardware feature.

And then 20% more of that, and 20% more of that, on to infinity!

It doesn't matter how big the battery is (to the point it can still fit in your pocket, anyway) this will always be a thing.

The point is that when you do need that extra 20%, it's more of a "bonus". And that your battery will last longer by not holding maximum charge except when it's necessary.

iPhone battery life is so good anymore that 80% is already all day life for most users. And when it's not, you can stop limiting the charging and now you still have all day life on a two year old battery.

I’ve been using iPhones for 14 years and have always charged to 100% and since Apple introduced the ability to see your battery health percentage I have never lost more than 7% in a full year.I mostly charge overnight too.So I will stick to the 100% capacity and will just get a new battery after a couple of years or upgrade.
7%! My 15 Pro has been using the 80% the whole time and with 162 cycles since September is still at 100%.

Between charging in my car and keeping it on a charger for StandBy at my desk, I've never had to go out of my way to charge and it's never affected me. And really, even weekends away from those I'm fine. For sure, that doesn't describe everyone, but I bet most light/medium users would do fine with it.

I have abused my 15PM draining to almost 0% and back up to 100% constantly and 115 cycles it’s only just dropped to 99% health

Mine just says "You're currently enrolled in the iPhone Upgrade Program. 100% charging is sufficient."

If I charge my phone overnight and only sets to charge it to 80%, how is that supposed to be good for the battery if the phone is connected for hours? Will my phone actually be at 100% the next morning and only set to 80% by the software?
The phone will stop charging at 80% even though it is plugged in.

Why do people even care about their battery? When my Battery reaches under 90% or right before the warranty ends I call Apple for an Express Replacement bringing up some issue to get a new device for free...

I think it's funny seeing people complain about how apparently bad their 14/15 Pro Max battery is only to find out people willingly cut 20% of their battery out from the beginning. What's the point of preserving the battery health if you never even use it.

self induced schizophrenia

For some reason this reminds me of

I've been using a shortcut that alerts me when the battery reaches 80% or drops below 30% for years.
Works great, only leave it plugged in when you're about to head outside for a while.

Screw that. Give me a 100% charge. I don’t care if it runs the battery down quicker, I’ll just replace the battery when the time comes.
