that would be illegal in CA and probably other places, so, there better not be that option
Perfectly legal here in Indiana. Even if the other party is out of state, recording a conversation just requires one participating party to consent.
I have a Bluetooth device that I use for recording customer service calls sometimes, to have a record of what was said. No big deal.

I wish the iPhone could do it internally, though.

apparently it’s coming with iOS 18.

I don't want or care about AI or all these new features.

It's like Apple is making it easier not to upgrade to a new phone.

The downside is my 13 mini is going to die at some point and there are no alternatives for a small smart phone.

Let’s hope there is an option to turn off notifying others of recording.
I doubt that will happen. The following is the law (not sure if things have changed) and there may be laws in other countries too that will be violated if notification is disabled. Many Android phones had call recording features that did not include notification features earlier. But now, I think they are mandatory.

According to the compilation of Ralph Thomas’s “Covertly Recording Telephone Conversation,” the Federal Law of the USA makes it lawful to record a conversation without the consent of the other participant in “one-party consent states.” However, there are 12 “two-party consent states,” wherein the consent of all participants is strictly required to record the calls. If you are a non-participant and still you record the call without the consent of one of the participants in a “one-party consent state” and of all the participants of the call in a “two-party consent state,” then it is considered illegal eavesdropping or phone tapping. This was the Federal law; the Supreme Court has taken a different stance on it. In Rathbun v. US, the Supreme Court held that a party can’t impose secrecy or confidentiality just by having a conversation on the telephone. And therefore, a participant in a call is entitled to record a communication and may use it for his own benefit or for any other purpose.

This whole message is both unhinged and hilarious. I love satire.
Yeah it’s all fun and games until you realize that the FREAKING exposure lock in the stock camera app DOES NOT WORK PROPERLY and has not since at least the iPhone 12 Pro. Go ahead and do an exposure lock on the sky then go under an overpass. The video is going to have a color change in the sky when you emerge from under it.

So yeah that guy’s post is a little much or whatever but there are absolutely issues in core apps they won’t address. I have to throw away a lot of shots because of that garbage.

It’s just one example.

Still, just because it’s niche doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be there. Granted, Apple may choose to never implement, but that’s a different story.
There’s a cost vs benefit consideration to feature design. As complexity increases, so does development and support cost, along with risk for bugs with every code change. A niche use case for a general consumer device is not likely to see base code light of day. Third party customization fills that gap.

That's good. But I'm sure Apple wants to cover their behinds regardless, so you'll have to notify the other party of the recorded call.

I’m fine with notification. If the other person doesn’t like it then don’t call me. Text me (which is better).

But hopefully it auto records and transcribes both incoming and outgoing automatically.

that's the important piece, as at least in California, it's illegal to record a call without announcing or consent ...

Wonder what Apple support will have to say if you turn this on while on a call to them ;)
That would be the perfect use of recording. Support gives you instructions and you record and transcribe them so you can listen or re-read at a later date.

Or at least transcribe calls without an actual recording needing to notify them. I just want my calls put into notes so I can review them later. I often forget specific things when talking to contractors or whoever.

But I will be recording my dealings with companies that already record me. Like anytime I am making a change to my service for internet or phone I want a copy for my records in case they try to pull something.

But with how easy it is to fake AI voices, will this even matter in the future?

I'm going to use this feature all the dang time. Especially when dealing with US insurance companies who don't want to pay for medications covered in policy.

This will replace my current, and very complicated setup on my Mac to be able to record conversations.

Great idea. Don’t know if you have an Apple Watch or an ipad, but personally I’ve been recording calls with both of those devices for years in the voice memos app. Works great

I have both, but I prefer to get "the best call quality I can. (Also, I really really hate speakerphone.)

I have a pretty complicated setup:

I have a Pro mic on a boom that I pipe into a capture device and then into my MBP
And from there I use Loopback from Rogue Amoeba to snag audio from either FaceTime or Google Voice.

From there I capture the audio in GarageBand (no need to do this in Logic 😂) with each side of the conversation getting an audio channel.

It's crazy, but I've had to use these recordings to get customer service from companies before. It's pretty awful.

So many “gimmicky” features. But just basic stuff, such as “finding contact names using keypad T9 the on phone” are missing. I had this on all my Androids for ever.
Yes! They did it, Apple figured it out how to do T9 on a phone at version 18: https://www.neowin.net/news/apple-i...-the-t9-dialer-with-the-latest-ios-18-update/

Then for ios19: easy access to numbers and symbols on the iPhone keyboard (like iPads). Pretty please?

I thought Apple would announce a fantastical like version of the agenda with natural language input because of all its AI stuff. But no….

Glad to see that 3rd party call recording apps are no longer required. Really useful addition in iOS 18

As there are a nos of old models inaccessible to the new Apple intelligence.

So, does it mean call transcript available for all models eligible to ios18, while call summary is an advanced features of Apple intelligence hence is limited to models equipped with A17 or higher ?

Just wondering why you would want to sort your contacts by date/time added?

I usually sort by name, so you can find the person you want to call.
Never had the need to look for someone I added in march 2014, so I could give them a call.
Goddamn it. You ve never had the need find the details of that guy you added last week? Or all the people you added after going through contact sheets from the exhibition you just had? Or need to know ‘when did i meet that person (and subsequently add them to my contacts?) ?’ Even the ability to show contact creation date would be a start

iOS 18: So many new features, so few bug fixes.

Long-standing iOS bugs (from many previous iOS versions) will not be fixed in iOS 18.

With more new features than ever before, iOS 18 will likely be the buggiest release in iOS history.

Tim Cook is a greedy corporate scumbag who is far more concerned about making money than providing customers a user-friendly user experience.

iOS 18 will still include a user-unfriendly Microsoft-pioneered flat design GUI instead of a user-friendly Apple-pioneered skeuomorphic design GUI.

Cook's most colossal failure of a decision was firing Scott Forstall. iOS was a far superior under Forstall's leadership. Forstall's masterpiece iOS 6 was the pinnacle of smartphone operating systems.
So am I to assume that you will be moving to Android?

They've effectively funded hundreds of lawyers who will sue for violations of state wiretap laws. Once again, Apple has created a solution for something that wasn't a problem, that results in hundreds of problems. They are gonna need to walk this back a long way.

My dude. Calm down. Take a breather. It’s just a phone. And the VAST majority of iPhone owners outside of this forum have no clue what bugs you are referring to.
