For me the camera roll was a separate place for pics taken on my phone. Like I said, if the grid is there, the grid is there. But just give me a place for pics I’ve taken on my phone and not synced from my Mac.
Yea... that's the thing — I quit syncing photos from my Mac — mostly because I couldn't delete them on the phone. I ended up airdropping all of my old images that I wanted. It took some time, but it was worth it.

Photos takes up about 65% of my iPhone storage. I have the worst mobile coverage and out of frustration, I opt to keep copies on my phone. Usually when I'm sharing my photos, I'm away from home and WiFi. It's frustrating that it's an all or nothing choice.

You would think that by now there would be more options when there's a single media type taking up more than half of most folks storage. My preference - Allow us to give a star rating (1 - 5) for our photos, then allow us to filter what we keep on the device. It would also be helpful to have a star rating just when viewing photos in general...
Yup. You (and me too) want a basic star rating like all pro photos apps including Aperture had. But Apple in its wisdom (/s) killed Aperture...

What if you only have 1 or 2 photos? Can we get rid of this large blank area at the top of the screen? See attachment.

For those who are playing around with the iOS/iPadOS 18 Photos app, does it have a filter to show me all photos that aren’t in an album? On macOS I just have a smart album for that, but I’m guessing smart albums weren’t implemented in these changes.

The latest update has slightly improved it but I still hate it. I just want to quickly look at my photos and not having a bunch of junk “features” showing up that don’t even work for me. I tried to like it but it doesn’t pick photos to feature and won’t find people/pets. So it’s completely useless.

I also hope to be able to turn all of this off.

I have 100,000 or so photos dating back to the mid 90s and am fine with the standard (original) view. That’s all I want and I hope it’s not harder to access. I already don’t like all these “memories” and things popping up, and certainly don’t want “look we have the latest buzzword AI too” functions intruding on what should be just a simple collection of photos.

So turn them off. Whoa.

Didn’t see any noticeable improvement. Using all in one view in lieu of tabs does not make much sense and whether like to or not is subjective.

The collections in utilities are nothing new but kind of iconising some of the common searchable items that has been available by keyword search in previous IOS version.

Could anybody shine some light on what actual improvements or new features that the new photo app could bring in apart from those under apple intelligence?

By the way, I did see the Google photo recently incorporated kind of generative AI object removal tool in addition to the famous magic eraser. Now, the app could generate background for the portion in which an object have been removed. The result is amazing. The user is allowed to choose a few of generated results or ask it to regenerate another batch of outputs. Furthermore, Google photo introduces a feature of group similar photos which I have been long for. It make my days for deleting redundant images after attempts of candid shots.

It sounds like Google is getting ready for offering FREE image enhancement features to fight vs Apple intelligence while Apple is still at its comfort zone to do nothing but simply revamping photo app ‘s UI and keeping the very BASIC image editing tools! Its duplicate tool under utilities is still not able to sort out similar shots but only exact copies of images, which is not so useful at all.

Just wondering, what the point to incorporate a star rating system for the personal photo collection on mobile?

If this rating is simply for managing photos for future deletion, why not create 5 nos of albums of different stars, then add the photos to any of the starred albums at your preferences. Thereafter, one could review the photos in starred album and delete any he/she likes?

Two features that most photographers would like to have for managing their collections, now offering by Google photo but lacking in iOS, are grouping for similar photos and blurred photos.

I don’t know why it is so difficult for Apple to provide them based on on-device logic. It is NOT about recognising objects which may require server level AI, but grouping the photos on device per certain criteria.

Juat have Camera Roll (or recents) ie. pure chronological view of the photos/screen shots I’ve take (no albums, “memories”, etc). Does anyone even use any other view?!? Apple seems to be looking for solutions for problems that don’t exist.

They’re trying to increase time spent within the app

I only want to see pictures I’ve recently taken in first view ie camera roll and week/month/year/location/albums as tabs, not scrolling. IMHO this new look is messy/noisy/cramming too much into one place.

I want to the ability to see if a photo is added to a library. Maybe it's already there but I haven't seen it.

Must be great to just change your App without any fear of the backlash in reviews, and ratings, from users.

I write Apps for a living.
I just updated the UI on my best seller, first change in about 10 years.
I got a lot of heat for that even though the changes were long over due and it is easier, and faster, to navigate now.

People get comfortable with a system, takes them a few years of using it to get use to finding their way around it.
The people who work on it daily know it inside out and, I think, often fail to remember that the end user doesn't.

When I saw this post I felt myself groaning. It even crossed my mind NOT to upgrade to 18. Since I have to test my apps on it I have little choice.

The fact that you can customize the hell out of this app is what makes it great. I get it, nobody likes to relearn the basics. But this redesign will prove to be better and more efficient in the long run. Just like Safari did.

Thanks to customizations, almost everything I need is on a single screen:

Grid
Albums
Favorites
Media Types
Utilities

Everything else is fluff and promptly removed.

Put those in a tab bar and I’m on board

Looks like Apple is trying to close the gap with Google Photos and Photo Editor. The Face recognition in Google Photo album is really great, if I tag the face of a person in his mid 20s, it could identify his / her image all the way to his first day of the birth! Hope Apple has something similar or more interesting.
