The burning question is...

Will RCS messages have blue bubbles or green?
the blue vs green bubble debate would end if Apple let users change the color of the bubbles like the old iChat

So I can only seem to get RCS working if I disable wifi and reboot.
As soon as I reconnect wifi it goes back to SMS.
Also simply turning wifi back off doors not switch back to RCS, only a reboot does.

Anyone else seeing the same?

On T-mobile in case that matter

Disable mms and RCS and reenable that’s worked for me

Well it's a good thing that Apple realizes the vast majority of people don't hold the belief that it's a sin against the corporation to reply to a green bubble and therefore are providing a better user experience. For the vast majority, RCS Messaging is a big improvement over SMS.

In the real world people communicate with each other regardless of the phone they use. From what I see most are happy with the improvement in texting quality and function this will provide. No matter how upset you are about this development, it's a done deal. Click the slider to shut it off and move on.
No it’s more like apple was forced to. This certainly wasn’t their idea.

The vast majority of ppl don’t even know what RCS is so they have no idea if it is better or not.

There’s nothing to move on from. The people who made such a big deal about this have it and I can easily turn it off it appears so that’s a win in my case

You forgot the 3rd possibility, not everyone loves Apple or iOS. I've daily driven iPhones before and I don't like/enjoy using iOS nor do I like Apple's business practices.

That doesn't mean I wholeheartedly endorse Google's business practices either but Android is my lesser of two evils choice mainly because of the freedom it allows me within Android. I'm in IT but before I had an interest in IT, I was always interested in tech and I can still be interested in Apple and acknowledge when they do something I like without making them my personal computing choice.
For some reason Apple loyalists in particular feel an overwhelming urgency to make themselves feel superior to other people, which in fact makes them look weak and desperate for acceptance.

Obviously there are bigger issues with mental health that go a lot deeper than just liking a brand a little too much, but it's systemic in a lot of societies these days.

If anything, having a history of using both Apple and Google devices shows a larger overall interest in technology. Not to mention having an open mind is perfect for an interest in technology as a while.

Here in the UK most people don't know what RCS is, but a large majority of people supplement WhatsApp usage with RCS without even knowing it. That's due to Google Messages being the default "texting" app for the last few years.

Most people I know have stopped using WhatsApp for 90% of communication and use Google Messages, it's honestly a much better app and they overtook iMessage a while back, which is why Apple are "inventing" similar features for iOS 18.

I’m running beta 2. When I text one phone number of an Android user, it sends as RSC and shows status (delivered/read). But, if I do a group text of iMessage and Andriod numbers, it sends as SMS.
Are all your other iPhone friends on beta 2 with RCS enabled?

With RCS, will I be able to message an android user directly from an ipad or macbook that have no cellular connection, only wifi?
When you have a cellular account on your iPhone, shared with your iPad or Mac, and they have a cellular account on their android device, and both cellular accounts are by carriers with RCS support, and the carriers have pushed a RCS profile, and any configuration enabling RCS on the devices is set to 'On'... sure!

RCS isnt controlled by carriers. Please stop spreading bad information. It runs on Vibe, which is owned by Google.
Half-true. RCS is a carrier service, standardized by the GSMA, that many carriers have outsourced to Vibe/Google (mostly to support Android users). Google's servers and clients have several extensions that are not standardized by GSMA or for that matter made available publicly, and there have been reports they have denied third parties that have attempted to license them.

If the carrier has not enabled RCS, iPhones will not show an option to enable it. If the carrier does not use Google to provide RCS, then it will use the carrier's server (but likely still hit Google's server on the recipient side).

Goodbye what’s app!
RCS have been in Europe on Android for a while now and yet have made no difference Whatsapp, I presume it is on Android in the U.S. and again have made no difference to Whatsapp, so why would it being on Iphones make any difference?

More Android users than Iphone users.
I don't use Wjhatsapp myself or RCS.

Is this mainly a thing used in the US since the rest of the world is just using WhatsApp? I honestly don’t remember the last time I sent an SMS. Probably 15 years ago so this whole concept of sending a “text” to android users is foreign to me.

Similar here, but some people don’t use WhatsApp due to its Meta roots, so I also keep Viber, Telegram, etc. to cover all bases. If I receive a message, I use the same client to reply. If I am contacting them first, then it is WhatsApp, iMessage or SMS first, in that order.

Does it mean for international messages too. I have WhatsApp as some international buddies dislike SMS, apparently they have to pay to receive and send. If I can get rid of WhatsApp then it will be great. Just one less app.

The potential problem with your international buddies could be that RCS messages might not be supported on their end, depending on their phones and cellular providers. So it could be a trial and error for a while.

So what about those that don't use Whatsapp, or do everyone you know use Whatsapp? I don't use Whatsapp and I know a few that don't either, so use SMS. Those that do, if they want to contact me by message, then they can use SMS.

As for RCS, it is supposed to be the replacement for SMS, so people can send stupid hires emojis to other people and high quality photos and videos, like what can be done in WhatsApp. The difference is that RCS will be on every phone, so no third party app required. Been around for a while now, with Google pushing it.
I use SMS, the app I use Textra, don't support RCS and i would turn it off anyway.

It’s funny I wonder if Apple users are actually more excited for RCS than Android users… Android users tend to seek the cheapest possible phones (either they’re unenthusiastic about tech or can’t afford Apple products), cheapest aka MVNO carriers (most don’t use RCS?), and their phones never update due to fragmentation, etc, AND, Google seems to not even set RCS on by default all of this adds up to what I presume is very low participation in it. Perhaps Apple users care more that their videos aren’t degraded to crap via MMS than Android users, that their messages are encrypted, etc and all this RCS hype from Google has been mere marketing BS?! I think we’re setup to be disappointed that RCS would actually solve SMS!
RCS don't need a carrier to support it as Google have taken upon themselves to support it. Vodafone in the U.K, did support it using their own servers for a while but now Google is managing it

If I changed over to the Google messaging app I could use RCS and my carrie don't support it. As for Android users seeking the cheapest phone, some of us do, well not the cheapest, but I certainly would not pay more than £200 for one, my last one was £140 and is 3 years old and still works fine. I don't see the point in paying stupid prices for phones that do the same things as mine, but slightly faster.

I can afford Apple products, I am using a Mac mini m2 pro, I could go out and buy a Iphone right now if I wanted to, just don't see the need to. I know of people who don't work and have benefits that have Iphones, it is easy to get one., certainly in the U.K. with packages being offered on pay monthly terms.

There are other ways to send videos if that is what you really want to do and photos, agin if that is really what you want to do. There is such thing as email and if it is a large video then use an online stroage system like dropbox. I don't use RCS as I don't have the need for it, SMS does everything I need it to do, it is in the name.
