So what about those that don't use Whatsapp, or do everyone you know use Whatsapp? I don't use Whatsapp and I know a few that don't either, so use SMS. Those that do, if they want to contact me by message, then they can use SMS.

As for RCS, it is supposed to be the replacement for SMS, so people can send stupid hires emojis to other people and high quality photos and videos, like what can be done in WhatsApp. The difference is that RCS will be on every phone, so no third party app required. Been around for a while now, with Google pushing it.
I use SMS, the app I use Textra, don't support RCS and i would turn it off anyway.

Does not exist. Even grandmas use WhatsApp

RCS isnt controlled by carriers. Please stop spreading bad information. It runs on Vibe, which is owned by Google.
Some carriers in the U.K. run their own RCS system, Vodafone did for a while, but have now gone over to Google.
Google originally wanted carriers to support RCS, but it has not happened, and that is why Google had to step in. Sop while it is a standard and a replacement for SMS, it is still done by a third party company.

You forgot the 3rd possibility, not everyone loves Apple or iOS. I've daily driven iPhones before and I don't like/enjoy using iOS nor do I like Apple's business practices.

That doesn't mean I wholeheartedly endorse Google's business practices either but Android is my lesser of two evils choice mainly because of the freedom it allows me within Android. I'm in IT but before I had an interest in IT, I was always interested in tech and I can still be interested in Apple and acknowledge when they do something I like without making them my personal computing choice.
Since you are in IT what are your thoughts on data collection from Google without users permission?

Is this mainly a thing used in the US since the rest of the world is just using WhatsApp? I honestly don’t remember the last time I sent an SMS. Probably 15 years ago so this whole concept of sending a “text” to android users is foreign to me.

I think it's a thing in the US where kids and people from lower socioeconomic classes can feel rich and exclusive for a bit.

Finally. So sick of asking for a photo of something from a client, and they ask their employee to take it and their phone compresses a 2MB photo to 180kb, then the client's phone compresses it again down to 18kb. Thousand dollar phones with world class cameras, and the message apps turn the photos into a tiny blur of pixels. I feel like this would have pissed Steve Jobs off. But, iMessage has obviously been a massive success, so maybe Jobs would have been pleased.

RCS have been in Europe on Android for a while now and yet have made no difference Whatsapp, I presume it is on Android in the U.S. and again have made no difference to Whatsapp, so why would it being on Iphones make any difference?

More Android users than Iphone users.
I don't use Wjhatsapp myself or RCS.
Goodbye for me personally i hope. I only have it to speak to 3 friends/work colleagues

Looking from a safety perspective where SMS can be sniffed by everybody as it has almost zero security layers it’s a good step (to everybody using SMS as 2FA, use code generation apps: build into Keychain / Google Authenticator, Authy or Yubikey (the best as it’s on separated device but read via usb and NFC).

Question is which implementation is used there because Google tried to do their own and everybody knows what happens to data in Google or Facebook hands.

Will be there mess like with USB-C ?

Us old folks will use SMS.

:)

You won't if RCS is automatically switched on, because how would old folk know the difference, let alone what to do about it? (not necessarily you, but old folk in general who are not very tech savvy)

WhatsApp is a great service but that app is booty cheeks. And “the rest of the world” uses several messaging platforms.

Saw some guy on Reddit saying he has it but didn't have anybody to test with. Seems fishy. He's on Telus.

I am on Fido. RCS option is not available.

Overall, iOS 18 beta 2 feel more sluggish than first beta. I had no issue running beta 1 on iPhone 11 Pro, but beta 2 struggles on iPhone 12 mini.

This honestly feel like RCS roll out on iPhone going to be messy and long.

I now have RCS working on my phone. My ipad is also running beta 2. When I go to the Messages app, and look at the same Contacts that show "RCS" on the iphone, they are still "SMS" on the ipad. In other words, even though my iPad is also on Beta 2, and my iphone has RCS working, RCS is not working on the iPad yet.

Has anyone else seen this?

Typing indicator, read receipts and reactions are all working between my work iPhone 13 and personal Pixel 8 Pro. Also very happy to report that video taken on iPhone and sent over RCS is not compressed anymore and playing back in HDR on Pixel 8 Pro. Now I just wanna convince the wife to let me update her 15 Pro so I can stop having her use WhatsApp to send me videos.
Can you please help me out with testing out something for me? I’m not in the US and I was wondering how App Clip URLs show up in RCS. Do they show up like in iMessage, or just a plain URL?

Here’s a random instagram reel that triggers an app clip invocation in iMessage.

Every time SMS or RCS is discussed, someone comes along and says "what is this? I use WhatsApp". Good for you, keep using it, move along.

For some reason Apple loyalists in particular feel an overwhelming urgency to make themselves feel superior to other people, which in fact makes them look weak and desperate for acceptance.
Oh dear God. Please go visit an Android-focused forum and tell me those people don't define themselves by how much they hate Apple.

I guess my biggest question is, why is it carrier specific (I'm ignorant to this, and could probably look it up, but would rather ask everyone here 🙂 )

Also, will this be something that MVNOs (such as Mint / Visible) support? I know they will eventually, but I'd love for a day 1 rollout.

This feature seems to me a lot less relevant that all the media (ok, IT media) frenzy about it.
No it’s a really big upgrade in the US where everyone texts. I hate getting pictures from Android users because they come across as less than 1 megapixel. Like I got baby pictures from my friend, 130kb 😑

I have a camera I got from my Dad from the year ~2000 that uses floppy disks to save photos, and they’re still nearly 3x that size

It’s pathetic it took them as long as it did to go to a new standard
