I know Apple can probably point to statistics to the contrary, but I use Siri every day on many devices, and would like to use it more, but it honestly feels like it's barely more capable or usable than it was a decade ago. For something so important, for something that Apple has poured an unholy amount of resources into, that's almost a total fail.

Well of course I know Instagram is FaceBook, but does Apple allow the end user to control privacy or is it implied you give up all privacy per apps that Apple approves on their App Store? I don’t blame Instagram. I know they’re data collecting, which is why I don’t allow App Tracking, microphone access, camera and photo access. How is it possible for Instagram to present an advertisement about a product I was talking about with my wife or friends when my phone was locked and screen off? I blame Apple for apparently allowing apps to override (presumably?) Apple’s app settings that the end user supposedly controls from the Settings app.
As you are probably aware, Apple has forced apps to advise what info they track. I can’t blame Apple for the stuff Instagram does. Apple would not be able to dictate that level of security. And nor do people actually want them to. I don’t believe anyone is overriding Apple's security (with knowledge from Apple), or the apps would be killed off. They’ve done this en masse several times and do it as a regular process now.

I think the blame put on Apple is misplaced on this occasion.

As far as the tracking itself goes.. yeah it sucks how they know. Do they actively listen? It’s also like Uber tracking our location 30 minutes after I shut the app 'for my security'.

And from their Data Policy:

Things that you and others do and provide.
  • Information and content you provide. We collect the content, communications, and other information you provide when you use our Products, including when you sign up for an account, create or share content, and message or communicate with others.
It seems they openly say they collect data when we communicate. And it doesn't stipulate the type of communication.,

I think you'll find this really helpful! You can actually let Siri know how to pronounce any one of your contacts.

You're welcome 😉
Thanks and now, what about non english artists in apple music/spotify?:)

I hope this major overhaul, other than making Siri smart for once, will allow a smoother experience for multi-languages requests (e.g. asking in Spanish to play an English song)
This! And while we’re at it, how about auto recognizing iMessage languages? In multi lingual Europe it is not uncommon to receive German, English and Dutch messages from different colleagues. Having them read out in my car can be hilarious, but unproductive.

When Steve Jobs died and Tim Cook started to care for Services only at Apple.
@Theyayarealiving: you can do better than ye olde ‘Steve would’ve’. Apple bought Siri because it was the best at the time, but it turned out to be an architecturally dead end. Turning that around is not easy when you have it embedded in your OS, and you insist on an on-device and privacy first approach. Google, Amazon and ChatGPT jumped ahead by blissfully ignoring any privacy or copyright concerns. Apple can’t/won’t do that, and that makes it hard for Apple to pivot.

As I’ve said in a related post, Apple might be too late. If a smart competitor comes with a truly general AI driven OS within 2 years (privacy be damned), it might be game over for Apple.

I don't ask much. When I say "start timer for 30 minutes" just don't start for 10 minutes.

That's it.
Must be your non-CA accent 😉. That works for me every time. Trying to move the right appointment by a day or an hour on the contrary… I sometimes end up with 5 different dentist appointments as I try to get Siri to enter the right date and time. Hilariously frustrating…

Sorry, but I'm tired of seeing this excuse trotted out. Siri's utter crappiness has nothing to do with respecting privacy. The constant disappointments are not because it doesn't have access to the data it needs. It's because they bought a dead-end product more than a decade ago and never properly addressed it until they fell way behind.

Just one recent example. I told Siri to remind me when I get home to do a thing. I could see that it understood me correctly. It knows where my home is. It has access to my Reminders. Yet it failed because I had cellular data turned off. It worked when I turned it back on.

Why on Earth does that need to go out to the Internet? How does that have anything to do with respecting privacy? All of that information was available offline, on device.

They've claimed for two years now that Siri can do a lot of things on-device, yet every single non-trivial thing I've ever tried requires Internet access.
It’s not an excuse, it’s the reason. Apple misfired with Siri, and now they have to make a painful pivot.

I still have basic issues with talking to a machine. A voice is something that should only be used for interaction with actual living creatures. A world where more and more voice is used for controlling machines is creepy.

And now all you americans imagine you try to use siri to call some of your contacts (with non american/english names)… that is really funny game, you have to imagine how should these names sound in English to give siri chance to choose right person - well, success rate aint big😂
Wait… are there people not speaking english? That can’t be a lot, can it? 🫣

I have never used SIRI and I never plan on using SIRI. I have it disabled on all devices.

Siri feels like it was down graded after ios 15. It's nearly useless
Siri has always been useless. It's just embarrassing how Google & Microsoft with GPT-4 are literally lightyears ahead.

Bing has gone from being a complete joke to absolutely essential in the space of 7 months. Yet Siri still as bad as it was 10 years ago as every single response is curated by humans to make it as 'safe' as possible to provide responses that won't damage the brand. Kind of ironic really.

Special new chip incoming to the iPhone 16 that's the only iPhone capable for the new Siri...
They will probably make this as an exclusive to boost sales. The old iPhones might have to do with a dumbed down Siri...
The fear of this is what is holding me back from any current Apple products purchases.

Or how about when you ask Siri what the current dew point is Siri actually tells you instead of sending you to a Wikipedia page for the definition of dew point. 🤦🏼‍♀️
Most importantly, of all the weather data, Siri really needs to tell the pollen count. If it’s healthy to run, and Apple is about fitness, then we need to know what pollen is out there.

Apple in iOS 18 plans to use language models to make Siri smarter, according to The Information. Apple wants Siri to be able to help users automate complex, multi-step tasks with voice-based commands.

iOS-18-Mock-Siri-Feature-Baubles.jpg

As an example, Siri might be able to do something like take a series of five photos, turn them into a GIF, and send the resulting GIF to a friend, all as one single action. Automatically converting photos into a GIF is possible right now with the Shortcuts app, but it has to be set up manually.

Siri's functionality will be similar to what's possible with the Shortcuts app, and it is likely that it will see Siri integrating more deeply with Shortcuts. Shortcuts have become a key part of the iPhone operating system and can be used for some powerful automated actions. Apple maintains a gallery of Shortcut options for everything from removing backgrounds from images to creating chore lists.

The Information says that Apple is aiming to release the new Siri capabilities as part of the iPhone's operating system next year, which suggests that it will be part of iOS 18. Apple competitor Google is also working to upgrade Google Assistant with language model software able to handle more complex tasks, so Apple may want to beat Google to the punch or at least launch similar functionality around the same time.

Apple's Siri personal assistant has long been criticized for being notably behind voice assistants from other companies like Google and Alexa, primarily due to Apple's focus on security and privacy. Many Siri tasks are performed on-device rather than through a cloud server, so Apple will need to find a balance between privacy and functionality with the adoption of language models for Siri.

The iOS 17 update that is set to see a public release in just a couple of weeks has very little in the way of new Siri functionality, but there is key functionality that would be a precursor to multi-step tasks. Siri in iOS 17 able to recognize and respond to multiple back-to-back requests without needing to be reactivated, something not possible in iOS 16. You can, for example, ask Siri the time and follow that up with a request to text your friend that you're going to be late without two separate requests.

With iOS 17, Apple is also eliminating the "Hey" wake word, so you are now able to just say "Siri" to activate the personal assistant. Eliminating "Hey" allows for more natural Siri interactions.

Apple follows a strict schedule for its software releases, so we can expect to see iOS 18's feature set unveiled at the 2024 Worldwide Developers Conference.

Siri is one of the worst assistants on the market. Hopefully they invest more r&D into it because "AI" or in reality automated processing has the most exciting potential for future smartphones. Eventually you will be able to do everything with just your voice or a command. That is what we are moving to. Super exciting

LOL, it better! The competition is running way way ahead of Siri, despite Apple’s huge head start.
That's because Tim the money Cooker took the company from being an innovation machine to a money hungry empire focused only on corporate bonuses and profits

Nothing is a ridiculous claim. Is it entirely responsible for its failings? Doubtful, but don’t pretend for a second that Google/Alexa got so good because they were focussed on privacy. On the contrary, I believe they improved so rapidly because they care nothing about your privacy and invade it as much as they legally, or illegally can.

I have found when using Siri, they way we articulate words is more important than with the advertising and sales company versions. The reasons it needs to be connected to the internet? Like the others, they’re cloud based. It does some pre processing on the device, but the main works still done in the cloud. How smart are Google & Alexa when not connected? So one rule for them, and one for Apple?

You do know that Instagram is Facebook, right? And you gave your rights to privacy away when you put it on your device. Here’s the test. Does the same thing happen with Android, or is it less or more?

You didn’t refute anything I said. You just made speculation.

The exact same phrase worked when online, and I have it set to transcribe what it hears me saying as it hears it. It heard me correctly and had on-device access to everything it needed to do the job.

I don’t know what you were even trying to say in your second paragraph. You still didn’t answer the simple question about why when Apple says Siri processes as much as possible offline, why does such a simple request require internet access? And since the explicitly given explanation is “privacy”, how does sending that to the internet do anything to protect my privacy?

I never said anything about google assistant, I’m only talking about Siri here and its failing to accomplish a relatively simple task that it has full access to.
