It's vaporware at this point. Apple was late to the game and is rushing to catch up. Who knows if these features will ever work right. At this point what we saw at WWDC is aspirational, "this is what we hope things can work like".

You didn't like this?

Every year, Apple announces a new OS. They ALWAYS stagger the individual feature releases throughout the year. This is much better for users than a rushed beta to meet an arbitrary September deadline. People complaining about this have zero clue how software development at that scale works.
while I tend to agree I think there are some very serious issues that bear examination. The weird and capricious app review and approval process, the blackhole that is the radarr bug reporting feedbacck mechanism. Maybe if they were a little more forthcoming and transparent there would be more good will and benefit of the doubt

You said: "Really there is no excuse for them being this late to the AI party. "

So, if we can't excuse Apple, what should we do instead? Just be angry?

You don't have to do anything, no one said you did. I'm not sure if you are aware of this or not, but you can be disappointed in an organization like Apple without taking any specific action. It's kind of what these forums are for which is to express your thoughts and feelings about all things Apple. Just an FYI.

When you look at Android having this out at start of year, it really does look like Apple was asleep at the wheel, doesn’t it. Perhaps is time for younger blood there?

IMO, it's less about age, and more about vision.

A 40 year old CEO similarly as laser focused on profits as Tim, won't do much to improve things.

As always with Tim Apple, playing catch up.
a little, yes. But then again we're in early days with this ML (AI) stuff yet, so it remains to be seen if anything thats a going concern now will have the longevity to still be a talking point years down the road. Some of it sure, but I imagine things like genmoji will go the way of the touch feature on the early apple watches
I'm fine with them slow rolling and seeing what, if any, of "AI" actually takes hold

There is a massive hype bubble around all this right now
100% this

I keep looking, and wonder where the surprises/disappointments are hidden?

Let me stick my neck out for some Samurai treatment:
  • Apple made this stuff compatible with 15 Pro in order to get the developers going.
  • They do this in order to have apps and functionality available for the iOS 18 / iPhone 16 releases.
  • Another reason for making the stuff available for 15 Pro is to get some size to the userbase to make it worthwhile for developers to get things going early.
  • Further, they will get feedback from devs and users which they will use to improve the functionality and iron wrinckles.
  • HW/OS/App development is tit for tat in that working order. Again and again.
  • Additional/future features might be best served by having the base functionality out there, running in the wild for wrinckle removal and hardening before it makes sense to add stuff. Put it all in the bag at the same time, and what you´ll get is jelly.
It would not be common sense to expect all future functionality to arrive at once. If the users were to get everything right away in the same package, there would be serious delays both for new software (iOS/Apps) and hardware. What they do is rational and logical.

The proper capitalist answer is to buy a controlling interest or gather enough proxies to take control of the company and force Cook out and replace the Board of Directors with someone more forward looking.

But that is hard to do in practice and you need that someone more forward looking. Musk already has his hands full. So...
Unfortunately you are right. Just look at what happened to Disney a month or two ago. Bomb after bomb at the box office and even then they couldn't get the shareholders to vote shake up the board.

Could you imagine the panic around here if Apple's market capital was cut in half in 3 years time?

Don’t all these new “bells and whistles” require a 15 Pro or newer?

If so, glaring omission in the article Macrumors!

Great job Tim to sell those iPhone 16 models!

It seems like every year for the last 3 or 4 years, Apple has gotten worse about announcing features that people have to wait longer and longer to get. I would prefer Apple not announce features that aren't ready for release.

Remember the days of:

“… and it will be available tomorrow.” ?

I sure do.

Right, PCC just fell from the sky in less than a year.

Bells and whistles? TBH I expect more for a full upgrade. We’re stuck in an incremental upgrade cycle being sold it’s the next best thing

When my friends make comments like this I usually tell them “become a developer, work for Apple, learn AI coding and Privacy and security hardening across multiple systems including ones not made by your own coding since no one else is doing it correctly, then pass judgement or compare Apple with other ridiculous companies with half-baked garbage.”

It's not that new, the features of the OS's ever since Corona or maybe even before that have been trickling in with the .x-releases.
Integrating LLM-functionality into the core of their system in ways that lead beyond a ChatGPT-integration will take years going forward, I reckon that LLM will become as invisible a part of various systems as «online» has become. As the «internet» more or less has become aether or cloud, so will «AI» just be there in various forms and integrations.

App Control: ‌Siri will be able to‌ control all individual features in apps for the first time, expanding the range of functions the personal assistant can perform. ‌Siri‌ will be able to do things like open specific documents, move a note from one folder to another, delete an email, summarize an article, email a web link, and open a particular news site in Apple News.
I am not sure if this is really tied to AI. This should be functionality tied to Shortcut or not? More of Applescript for iOS. And Siri will just utilize it. Or am I wrong?
