And that's not all - it's also super unclear what features of iOS 18 are iPhone 15 Pro and up - obviously all the new siri stuff, but I installed on my 14 Pro and I can't even do the photo cleanup.

Photo Cleanup is part of Apple Intelligence. Apple Intelligence is much more than Siri.

...until you discover that you can't even buy tickets to a show, concert, or sporting event (including high school football games) without a smartphone.

A Brave New World indeed....
I was actually shocked that a golf tournament I recently went to with my father in law was phone only. They wouldn’t accept printed tickets.

…the clientele for golf tournaments isn’t exactly a young crowd. I was dumbfounded that the promoters set it up that way.

I'm old enough to remember when Mac forums were occupied with Mac fans. Now they are half Apple-hating trolls. In any case, I agree with your take. Anyone who has followed Apple for a number of years knows they don't try to be first. They try to be best. I can wait some extra months for the features when they are right. Google and Microsoft have rushed their products to market and have faced many embarrassments. Apple doesn't do that. (Except for Siri... I will never defend how bad Siri has been... lol).
I would say that is correct- its half and half. There are those of us that want Apple to do better and I dont think its unwarranted to hold them to the standard they themselves set/ are setting in this regard. They are never first to the market but their overall performance of late is concerning what with all the radarrs that go ignored, very little visibility to that whole process for devs, their own missteps. We cant just hand-waive that as apple haters.
EDIT to add: See also the 5-ish years of non-committal verbiage or flat out no response for folks like the Siracusas and Arments of the world that have to go make a public stink for something to change. shouldnt be that way.

I’m expecting most iOS 18 features to be delayed at launch. I don’t think it’ll be a smooth launch. Gone are the days of fully-baked OS updates on day one.

thats terrible, way to read the room. I'm sure the entrance queue got clogged with ticket scanners having to suddenly jump into a tech support role

The event itself was actually shockingly well managed, but they certainly cut out a ton of potential attendees on the front end by making the process so confusing.

Does anyone else feel like this 3 trillion company cant achieve the caliber it once had in 2017.. its honestly felt like 4 years of coasting...

Can't go to a NHL Penguins game and expect to purchase anything (food, beer, snacks {I repeat myself 😉}) with cash.

The entire arena is digital. If you don't have a payment method established in your phone you have to visit an onsite kiosk to insert your money in to and receive a payment card. I don't know what happens at the end of the event. I don't know if you can receive your funds or not. I'm guessing it's like the old arcade tokens and the answer is no.

Not sure if any other arena's are the same. Would be interesting to hear.

You’re missing the point. My point was that people will say “Oh Apple is late because they want to get it right.” No, Apple is late because they are behind and Apple Intelligence will be riddled with bugs upon release.

You said: "Really there is no excuse for them being this late to the AI party. "

So, if we can't excuse Apple, what should we do instead? Just be angry?

I think it’s just in time considering hardware, ChatGPT hype, etc. Never really had much of a problem with Siri. It’s not as if I use any other one.

Apple often isn’t first except when they are. Often not the best either except when they are. What they are the most imo is offering an ecosystem that is second to none both software and hardware. Plus all the little things. Value of hardware. Support. Continuity. Chips.

AI isn’t just Siri. And it’s not just mobile. Apple has an ecosystem to integrate. It’s going to take several years. And you’d expect ai on a Mac to differ than that on a mobile device for example.

I don’t see much that is useful in the short term though. Apple bought themselves time. And at the very least maybe iPhone won’t just be about camera updates each year now. It’s the experience and apps that haven’t changed much and AI can change this.

Troll? Maybe you did that some with last paragraph. Siri isn’t that bad. lol. I use it some with good results. Saw my wife respond to texts in car with good results.

I don’t think anyone likes the high prices of avp or apples slow progress with it. Some want macOS on iPad and they see it as something that CAN be done with m chips in iPads. But this is still coming from being interested in Apple and a fan.

I suspect (but we will never really know) that its gotten steadily worse with every re-write and that more folks have issues than not. But really it doesn't matter because the base level of reliability is that the thing is hit or miss and it can be 80% reliable but folks remember those times and it sticks in their mind in the same way people waiting in a checkout line multiply their time waiting. human nature and all. I think its not a dangerous or controversial statement to say that siri needs to be better.

So, basically, in other words, if you have an iPhone 14 Pro, you won't feel FOMO because the actually significant features of AI won't be implemented until 2025. Got it.

More like if you have any iPhone with a decent battery and capable of running iOS 18 (so the same lot as with iOS 17) - no FOMO at all. 😉

Probably not. Alexa for example pretty much crapped out on me. I’ve had a echo speaker (first one) that is since it debuted. I’ve had to unplug it. It’s next to useless now.

I guess that’s my bar for how things work. I still use Siri ok. No it doesn’t work 100%. But does the majority. But I guess it depends on what you’re asking it.

The proper capitalist answer is to buy a controlling interest or gather enough proxies to take control of the company and force Cook out and replace the Board of Directors with someone more forward looking.

But that is hard to do in practice and you need that someone more forward looking. Musk already has his hands full. So...

Sure, here's some Doo-wop music I found on the Internet!

Heh. I do name my playlists unique names so it doesn’t start playing a random song instead. Sometimes that doesn’t help.

Siri play banana playlist. Now playing banana boat song. Or now playing banarama. And then I’m too lazy to correct it so end up listening.

So, basically iOS18 is some customization options, change colors etc; oh and a calculator on ipad.. and that’s about it. Next year we will get some cool real innovative features, I’m honestly getting tired of “coming next year” .. hardware is now way ahead of software and it’s becoming not worth upgrading hardware anymore
The 2014 Mini in the stereo cabinet agrees with you :)

When Monterey goes off line this fall do I finally upgrade it or change to Linux? Decisions, decisions. ;)

OpenCore Legacy Patcher has my 2015-era macbook pro (the last good one before the dark butterfly keyboard years) running like a champ, may not be a process for someone that isnt technically saavy but its great for extending OS updates.

Is anyone really surprised they're at least 2 years behind everyone else? Asleep at the wheel is being polite. Siri has never caught up.

Every year, Apple announces a new OS. They ALWAYS stagger the individual feature releases throughout the year. This is much better for users than a rushed beta to meet an arbitrary September deadline. People complaining about this have zero clue how software development at that scale works.
