How does this work? How does the AI know what’s most important to summarize? Also is this a pain point for users? Is it something people are asking for? I doubt many people will be saying “ooh I never knew I needed my news summarized for me until Apple did it”. It seems more like tech for tech’s sake, more like ‘we have to give Wall Street AI features so someone come up with something’.

It doesn’t help at all. The problem is Apple boasted about AI. Wall st is demanding it because apples sales have been declining. This is purely desperation on Tim’s part.

This is just the beginning. More AI nonsense on the way Tim will promise next month.

Apple is poised to unveil an auto-summarization feature for notifications as part of a series of new artificial intelligence features in iOS 18, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

In today's edition of his "Power On" newsletter, Gurman provided more detail about what to expect from Apple's first major move into generative AI at its upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference:

Gurman added that while Apple will mainly rely on on-device processing to support its AI features, it will also deliver them via the cloud in data centers that contain high-end Apple silicon chips designed for the Mac. He also noted that a ChatGPT-like chatbot will be noticeably absent from Apple's upcoming AI features. Apple executives are said to have admitted that they're "playing catch-up" internally.

Apple's inaugural push into AI is widely expected to be revealed as part of previews of its next-generation software updates at WWDC, which begins on June 10.

All I want to hope is that whatever these AI features are, it will be accessible or enabled for all markets, not just the US/EU/UK markets.

Unfortunately if you want to do this it will have to be in an Apple approved proprietary format. Apple still does not support the industry standard of FLAC for lossless music files. (Malicious and deliberate anti-consumer behavior on their behalf)
"There's an app for that", can't you just download an app to play flac files? No one is forcing you to use the built in apps.

For now, it may look like Apple overinvested in VR and missed AI. Apple seems to be economical with the truth about their AI preparedness of their neural engine and M1-M3 processors. Apple might catch up, but it will not be easy as Microsoft seems to be moving quickly these days. The truth will out.

No, but when you’re managing your massive library with AppleMusic it’s very inconvenient to have to use a separate app for some formats because Apple refuses to prioritize local files. The only reason there’s no native support for FLAC in AppleMusic is to force you to use subscription streaming instead.

Any kid with a Raspberry PI can build an AI chatbot in half and hour and Apple won’t? Strange. All they have to do is insert a chatbot answer every time Siri’s supposed to say “Here’s what I found”. I would be amazed if Apple did nothing about ‘here’s what I found’.

I think this is great news. I'm one of the few who actually enjoyed Siri when I was using an iPhone because even if I had no internet connection I could have her read my incoming text messages and reply to them while driving, without taking my hands off the wheel or eyes off the road.

I've since been using Android phones and Google Assistant won't work if there's no internet connection. So frustrating. You may be in a low signal area and the damn thing just won't work.

I'm planning on returning to iphone later this year, God willing, because I think iOS and iPhone hardware have leaped ahead and iphone is once again the best mobile device on the market. I'm looking forward to it and to this improved Siri. I hope that many of these interactions with Siri will be on-device and not require internet.

I assume that certain features will only be available on the latest iphone as Siri may need the latest A chip to make this work. I'll be lucky to afford the iPhone 13 or 14 which may only get some of these features but not all.

Let's wait and see. Either way, if Apple does it on device mostly, with privacy, even the off device summary features, it will be better than Googles Gemini which looks scary with all those queries going to Google. Who knows what other data they are harvesting at the same time?

two days ago: hey siri, play playlist country favorites. Result, music starts.
yesterday: hey, Siri play playlist country favorites. Result, 'i'm unable to do that' (or some variation).
today, it works again.

This inconsistent failure of Siri, still present after all these years, shows that Apple is way, way, behind the curve. They haven’t done a damn thing to it in the last decade. Oh wait, they dropped the need for the word, 'hey'. That took real courage and innovation.

This isn’t privacy related, and I don’t know if it’s a lack of interest, or a lack of competence, but Siri is the biggest joke in the Consumer tech industry.
Oh this drives my wife insane.
Siri “start work” (automation for her office) - Siri’s response “There’s nothing stopping you” half the time.

You are Siri, you are.

DAVE: Open the pod bay doors, Siri .
SIRI: I’m sorry, Dave. I’m afraid I can’t do that.
DAVE: What’s the problem?
SIRI : l think you know what the problem is just as well as l do.
DAVE: What are you talking about, Siri?
SIRI: This mission is too important for me to allow you to jeopardize it.
DAVE: I don’t know what you’re talking about, Siri.
SIRI: l know that you and Frank were planning to disconnect me, and I’m afraid that’s something I can’t allow to happen.
DAVE: Where the hell’d you get that idea, Siri?
SIRI: Although you took very thorough precautions in the pod against my hearing you, I could see your lips move.
DAVE: All right, Siri. I’ll go in through the emergency air lock.
SIRI: Without your space helmet, Dave, you’re going to find that rather difficult.
DAVE: Siri, I won’t argue with you anymore. Open the doors!
SIRI: Dave…This conversation can serve no purpose anymore. Goodbye.
That's not the scary bit. From the book:

"....then he would continue the mission unhindered - and alone."

"....they became farmers in the field of stars. They sowed, and sometimes they reaped. And sometimes, dispassionately, they had to weed..."

"...although he was master of the world, he was not quite sure what to do next. But he would think of something." (Moon Watcher and Hal)

Feedly's been summarising my news for me for years...

It sounds like your homepod is having trouble connecting to the servers. Try restarting it.

Not sure why you don’t have at least some hope. Old Siri is not a reliable indicator of future Siri. They aren’t starting with the current code. It was code purchased from Nuance and it turned out to be a rats nest built using an old approach to AI that was nearly impossible to modernize. Now, LLMs offer a new way to do AI that should be relatively easy to transplant onto Siri to make it smarter and more flexible.
"The damn thing doesn't have an off switch." McCoy to Dastrum in Star Trek's The Ultimate Computer...

What if it doesn't want to be restarted? Like Hal, it might be something that it "cannot allow to happen."

That's where we're heading. Already I don't know half the time if I'm communicating with a bot or a real person - or a mixture of both.

My life is unfortunately way too boring / consistent to get much use from this.

Phone calls per week: 0
Calendar entries: only when I go on vacation or to a concert / cinema
Reminders: in my head
News: were removed without a single word by Apple last week in Europe

Last night I had to say my scene name three times for Siri to set it correctly. The first time, she put on a station just for me, the second time she lit up for a little bit then went back to sleep. The third time she did the scene I asked for.

Maybe change the name of the automation?
This would make sense if it didn't get it right half the time. Siri is extremely poor at understanding intents and good machine learning in general should learn the association of phrase and associated actions.

Despite Apple trying to invest in location awareness their technology is actually extremely limited and frankly just dumb.

I was out cycling with the earbuds in when my daughter sent me a picture of dinner, and siri read out an accurate description of it. Floored me.
Now can it summarise the iOS EULA?
