All Phones have been boring for years. Exciting evolutions were (imo):
  • Mobile phones (generally)
  • Nokia 3 & 5 series (phones for the masses)
  • Motorola Razr (original) and Nokia 9 series (phones that looked cool)
  • Maybe Blackberries (not for me)
  • iPhones and subsequent clones (Android etc).
Flips/Folds etc and just variations of smartphones but are essentially the same and just a solution to waning sales. No different to small candy bars or flips phones of an older generation.

No updated operating system is going to make anything exciting.
Now make a list of desktops & laptops.

Other than the jump from Intel to Apple Silicon I cannot recall anything exciting within the last 10 years.

But during the 80s, 90s & 00s I can think of some instances of excitement.

I think they absolutely tried. Who else has done that?

There are some notable examples, but let's be honest, design hasn't changed much, but when it does, who else does it more than Apple. But improvements in screen, cpu, graphics, battery etc, all-in-one unit is something no one else is doing except to try and keep up.
  • Probably the most recent was the iMac (2021). No one really does a desktop like that. Dell and HP are simply just copying.
  • The MacBook Air (2009) was a genuine game changer in design back in-the-day. The CPU hardware was clearly not up to it at that stage though. So, I could say the 2020 M1 was a massive jump with form factor and power.
  • They 'tried' with the trashcan, which came out 11 years ago I think, but at least they tried. Other than that, it's still a box and a screen, no matter how many curves or cheese grating holes they put in.
  • And we can use a Nuc Box all we want, but they don't stand a chance against the current Mac Mini for the same form factor. It brings it to a new level.
  • The also tried with the touch bar (which was a fail) and they tried with the butterfly keyboard (which was a fail). Credit to Microsoft, because they tried with a massive tabletop screen, but again... failed (it works but it was a pretty shyte form factor)
So whilst I don't think there have been any form busting designs in the last 3 years, they are still delivering top quality machines.

Who else is trying?

Software can be good, give us a new ui like Vision Pro; split screen true multitasking something that makes our day to day usage better but all we get is a worse photos app and imagine playground lol come on apple
Why would you want a Vision Pro UI on a phone?

This would be in line with the pattern Apple has held for a long time where the S model iPhones get an additional year of support.

iPhone 3GS 4 years (iOS 3-6)
iPhone 4S 5 years (iOS 5-9)
iPhone 5S 6 years (iOS 7-12)
iPhone 6S 7 years (iOS 9-15)
iPhone XS 8 years? (iOS 12-19?)

A whole new UI? With what purpose? To raise the minimum hardware necessary to run the new interface smoothly? And take 2 or 3 more iterations to finally have the new system interface ironed out? For what, an aesthetic change to please those that use their phones operating system as entertainment?

Honestly, as someone who just uses the operating system as a tool, I want the minimum changes as the system is finally quite mature, consistent, and snappy.

Because they like the devices lmao.

You make it sound like they are using an iPhone 7 lmao

iPhone 7 is still pretty usable for kids, who don’t need access data plan and limited apps. And if they break or loss the devices, I can easily replace with other cheap phone.

Yes. I don’t plan allowing my kids use social media apps. I will give him phone, so when he goes to school and I can contact him if needed. He is only grade 1, so no social media.

Makes sense, the iPad 7 is only supported strictly because it came out in 2019 and they wanted to make sure it had five years of support, mainly because it was the biggest education tablet during the pandemic.
But just going off of processors, it should have been dropped years ago with it’d A10, which was mostly abandoned with iOS 16.
The A12 was the first Apple chip with a neural engine, and was introduced on a product only back in 2020 with the A12Z iPad Pro, it makes sense they would keep those devices around another year or two.
The A13 was last used on the iPad ninth generation in 2021, it should receive updates until iPadOS 20 at least.

So 2027 and iOS 21 is probably the earliest that we will see A14/M1 and up, if not iOS 22 in 2028.

So my 12 Pro which I use alongside my 14 Pro may get close to a decade of updates?

Can we have next version of iOS and macOS with NO new features and just optimisation, bug fixing and Spring Cleaning / refactoring.

It’s a trap!

By keeping iOS support on old devices for longer, Apple can actually obsolete old devices faster.

Because new iOS updates often make old devices slower and more unstable than they would be otherwise.

Best to stick with a known-good iOS version on your old device and resist the temptation to update.
I learned that with my 4S which is now part of my iPhone “museum” alongside my 6s and X. My 12 Pro which I still use alongside my 14 Pro has no issues at all with iOS 18.

I mean at what point is a new release just going to be: "we changed the notification menu colors and added 10 emojis" IOS 25: This changes everything
iOS still needs a lot of improvements.

There’s always more AI features to make devices smarter, whether on device or with home devices.

More ways to make pictures better using the software side.

I think they could improve the usefulness of the iWork suite on a yearly or every other year basis.

The App Library needs improvement.

Just to add on to this, I don't understand folks who seem to get "mad" at those who prefer smaller phones ... or seemingly celebrate the total lack of options

It's not good for anyone to have such limited choice in device size/options (on Android and iOS!)

I just don't understand why people seem to be happy that everything is now basically a "Phablet"
Well apparently the small phone market is not big enough to be interesting for the manufacturers, it sucks to be in a small minority. Or are the manufacturers focus groups just wrong?

It’s got nothing to do with "focus groups". It’s just economics of scale and that people are prepared to pay for an Android or iphone in an iPad mini size.

well that's what you get with a mature product, and smartphones/tablets are at this stage mature, this is why manufacturers have to push stuff like AI (zzz) to convince people to upgrade often
